My mom is moving to a smaller house and found many old things, pictures, etc. Among these things a photo cut out of Oranjemund newsletter of Vic Nortier with Wikkie Steyn with a Hammond Trophy?
Now I wonder where is Victor and his brother André. Anybody knows?
Why not post the pic?. I remember hin as quote handsome..
Er.... me being younger than you lot.... but what is a hammond trophy?
idontknow
idontknow I don't know Michael. Could it be a Trophy won with Golf? It is THE Hammond trophy; not a hammond trophy :)
Charles Hammond was the owner of Rumbles, the building company which had the very lucrative contract for building Oranjemund. He was a rather overweight, cigar-smoking, streetwise Cockney with not much going for him other than his money. His wife, Joyce, was a very charming woman. After his death she donated the trophy in his memory, though why anyone would want to remember him beats me.
Regards,
Bob.
A Bot of the topic, but what happened to the Rumbles company? Did they go on to become another firm, were they just around for the Oranjemund project, where were they based? Perhaps in some office on Cape Town, in the back of a dusty storeroom , one might be able to find the old plans and perhaps a few snaps of the "birth" of Oranjemund....
Just a thought!
Hi all...Yes Johan Hammond was the big cheaf of Rumbles. some of you might remember my DAd, Gert Cloete. He was the Foreman of Rumbles. They also had a Head Office in Pretoria. My dad died in October 1971.. Rumbles closed down in Oranjemund not to long after that. Koos Vermaak worked there as well. Andrew Botha went back to Pretoria and stared a Glass Business - AB Glas. He is now retired and his son is running the business. We still have contact.
Vic moved to Joburg in about 1981 and was I think in contact with/ working with Clive Badenhorst who was the IBM salesman for Oranjemund during the 70's.
Thanks Derek for your answer.
