Title: Scrap Metal.....
Post by: Michael Alexander on May 12, 2009, 08:41:03 PM
As most of you are aware, A company called SaMetal are currently removing all the scrap from the mine, I know a special security area was built just on the other side of the PCC for this task.... I heard from the clearing agents at the border that it is quite a tidy sum going out to South Africa.... I just never realised how big, until when I drove down to Cape Town this past week..... I saw quite a few of these red container trucks heading up and down the N7, but on the way back I started to count.... on the entire journey on one day, I counted 14 trucks..... Do the maths....

I know it's great to clean up the desert and all that green stuff, but one wonders how much history(mining) is being removed with it.... Always had dreams of taking tour groups to the Uubvley dumps and showing them..... how financially powerfull this company once was......

This project is what is keeping Namdeb in the black at the moment and bringing in huge revenue from old scrap. They even took my old washing machine and dishwasher that had reached its end. So at least they aren't cluttering the dumps in town. Long may it continue for the future of the town.
