Post by: Andrew Darné on May 25, 2009, 11:03:02 PM
Who else in OMD is experiencing a regular supply of dirty/brown water? 1 complaint from mid 1st Ave and 1 from far East 9th Ave.

Any more??? Let us know...

@ Stennie, I know service isn't the greatest lately with reduced manpower and all. They can't be working on the pipes every day to make the water ga, but true yes, that happens too.

Just got feedback from the town services dept. They are aware of the problem and have started investigating by means of ilimination, beginning with cleaning of the reservoirs (I recall that being an annual task over the December "quiet" time). They also mention that some of the old water lines (bigger ones) are in the region of 50 years old (probably no surprise)and these give regular problems. The matter will be given to the higher authorities for a plan of action.

@Big Mike, you thought those little floaties in your glass are from the whiskey, ah shame... too many already... quickdop

Had a mud bath tonight I think they got a new way of cleaning the resvoirs, they agitate the water and let the consumers do the rest

A birdie reckons that since Peter Bews left town, the reservoirs have not had their regular service to remove the sludge, the system is there, but not being run properly...... I also noticed that the water is now smelling, very strongly of chlorine, more than it should......

Anyone know of a water lab in CPT?

Hi Andrew, when we were at 2 - 6th Ave, we had similar problems but ours statred back in 2007. Even got OTMCO to check out their side but nothing came of it. Even to the  day we left we still had the same problem. It was a lottery when washing white clothes.

As to Big Mike and his whiskey, well no comment

I spoke to the supplier I got the quote from and he has been here to take samples and installed a filter for a Namdeb employee who made a fuss about the water he has to bath in... shame, is that the worst of his worries, the bath. He hasn't heard from this chap again, so the filter must be doing the trick. Ok, this was about 4 years ago...

Anyways here are the numbers I promised yesterday.
Filter housing c/w replacable filter cartridge N$700 incl VAT & transport (estimated tpt).
Replacement cartridges +/-N$75 a piece. According to calculations based on past water conditions these should last at least 3 months before needing replacement. Current situation may be a bit heavier on filters until the water supply begins to clear a bit (if it ever will...).
Installation is of course extra if you are not going to fit it yourself.

If anyone is interested, send me a PM.

Official Response"

"ORANJEMUND WATER

Over the last month we have received various reports on isolated cases of dirty water coming from taps. To improve the situation we have now completed the cleaning of the water reservoirs.

Please note that water consumption has also dropped by 40% and we suspect that the dirty water is a result of stationary water staying for too long in pipes during the production interruption period resulting in sediment build-up. This situation might continue after July when production resumes in particular along distribution networks with many empty houses.

Please report all observations of dirty water to Steven @ tel 0811229632 to assist us to develop a database.

Please note that we have not changed our operations of the water supply system hence there should be no reason to have dirty water in the system .We are deeply concerned with the problem and investigations are ongoing.

In the meantime, we recommend residents to take extra precautions and boil water for human consumption"

Na, a load of hogwash, if the official report is correct why is it then this was happening years ago whilst the town and production was in full swing.

As you say Mike, who or what is OTMCo going to blame next.........

For last 10 years budget was cut and little work were done to the water distribution system. Most of the rusted pipe fittings and few kilometers of the rusted pipelines need replacement as well as old asbestos piping. All distribution system is cloak up with dirt and there is no ways that system can be cleaned.  The Swartkops reservoir is falling apart and ………..
May by the end of the day everybody blames me for that

Hi Milo, thanks for your first post.... nobody is blaming you.... I remember years before you left here , we were talking and you were complaining that before they could ever think of selling the houses or proclaiming the town, they would have to replace all the water and sewer system.... you said back then, that it was only designed for 40 years and was already 10 years past it';s replacement date...

I know of another resource that is bordering the same territory of over the "sell by date" in certain areas of historic Omund. Then again, many are already used to load shedding, so what's the diffs? Just buy more candles, a self powered borehole drill and a windmill with your next bonus.

Yes, great idea, why not turn Oranjemund into Namibia's first GREEN tow with each house being fully self sutainable (Solar and wind for power, Rain and borehole for water). Then we'll have a tourist attraction
