Title: Natal cash in transit - three robbers dead...
Post by: Michael Alexander on June 08, 2009, 05:25:40 PM
Is it just me, or does it seem that whenever there is a robbery in Natal, the crooks land up dead on the street? in other towns in ZA, they usually get away....

"Three killed in KZN cash robbery

Three gunmen were shot and killed and an officer was wounded in cash-in-transit heist in Umgababa, south of Durban, on Monday, police said.

Five men armed with assault rifle accosted cash-in-transit guards who were collecting money at the Umgababa Shell Ultra city, said Superintendent Vincent Mdunge.

"The suspects robbed the guards of two cash boxes and jumped onto an Opel Corsa."

When police in the garage approached them, the gunmen started shooting.

During the shooting, three suspects were shot dead and a police constable was wounded.

Two of the gunmen fled the scene in a hijacked Nissan sedan.

The two money boxes and the suspects' vehicle were recovered.

Police were combing the scene for more evidence later on Monday.

A case of armed robbery with aggravated circumstances was being investigated and an inquest into the deaths of the three men was underway, police said. - Sapa"

Cash-in-transit robbers are also shot dead in Cape Town. A lot of heists are kept quiet and don't make the papers.   iknow

On the subject of CIT, reminds me of the expression of absolute disbelief from a visitor of ours from the UK. The couple had spent their first ever 2 weeks in Southern Africa with us touring the Aus area and southern Namib. On our return trip to CT from OMD on the N7, we passed a CIT van that had pulled off onto a larney estates driveway near Malmesbury and backup personel from the security company were changing what looked like a flat tyre whilst being covered by the CIT guards armed with automatic rifles and dressed in BP jackets.
The visitors were absolutely gobsmacked to see the armed guards like that out on a "country road".
Us local folk don't even bat an eye at it anymore, scary thought though, it's become a part of life here.
