Remember the gun club draws?? Don't know if they still do them but it was always a brilliant party!
It actually became a standing joke amongst my friends that I would win a big prize at every second draw! God when I think back now... I won a venter trailer and sold it to Gavin Cooper for R1000!!!
I remember crawling home one night ... I lie .. one morning.. ...Allan Ferrie, Big John, Lee Pool and myself..... through the desert .... its amazing how far the gun club is from 5th avenue when you are on foot!!!
I was talking to Jaques Kemp who is now the chairman of the club, complaining that in those days they had just over 300 members at the club, sadly that number now stands just shy of 70...... the draws just are'nt viable anymore.....
The bar however still packs a punch and opens every sunday for the trigger happy moonshine drinking folk......... the odd friday night Steak evening still happens.....
" For the times are a changing!"... as I burst into song on this awesome weekend of rugger!
:o
Bev, I took a draw for just about every one of those, supporting the Gun club.
All I ever won was a Beer Mug ( and I don't drink beer) - I sold a lot of tickets to other people that won prizes.
You all forgot about Danny (The Greek) Cubic... How many BOOKS of tickets did he not buy then walk away with half the prizes. Check the Smalls in the following week's newsletter and there were all sorts for sale at pretty good prices too. I guess Danny didn't have much use for 3 or more M-net decoders at a time.
Those were good times...

The Gun Club was a huge part of my childhood life. Boetie Groenewald (me dad) chaired it for many years. I have such fond memories of the place. Is there anyone who actually has photos of the gun club with Boetie, Jimmy Gerstner, Freddie Aggenbacht, Kempie, Gert Screuder etc. Please email me.
