Title: Barbara Winstanley
Post by: Ann Gander (nee Greenway) on July 05, 2007, 02:50:44 PM
Would anyone know the whereabouts of Barbara Winstanley.  I believe she moved from OM to Johannesburg in the 1970's but I might be mistaken.  It's a long time ago but it would be lovely to get in touch with her again

Many thanks
Ann Gander (nee Greenway)

Hi Bobby
I remember you well, and Kay and Mavis, and all the excitement of the twins being born.  I think they were on the "Places to Visit" map!  We left OM in 1966 for Kimberley because of the boarding school issue, and then back to the UK in early 70's.  We're all still back in the UK living in various spots along the South Coast.
After leaving Kimberley,  I unfortunately lost touch with Barbara but my parents were told through colleagues at De Beers the sadness that Barbara had with her Mum and Dad.  Unfortunately I didn't know where she was although there was mention she moved to Jo'burg.  If you have an email address, that would be wonderful.  I put this request on the forum more in hope than anticipation and I have had such prompt success!  Thank you!  Please send my love to all your family as well.  Are you all back in the UK as well? Thanks again Bobby, and, if you are in the UK, continue to enjoy this wonderful summer!!!  Ann

Hi all,
Can anyone recall if Barbra Winstanley was an usherette at the local cinema in the early seventies? I recall the name well. Would she have been old enough then? I can remember an usherette saving me a seat in the front row of the bioskope every Saturday arvo. She was a real sweety! She was probably only a teenager at the time.

hi anne, bobby here, yes it was a very sad happening to barbaras parents, what a lovely family,i recall barbara comeing to stay at our house, same age as my sister kay,or a little younger,as i remember she attended wbhs,i have had an email from her but all stopped, dont know why,she had a sister the same age as my sister lilian,i think her name was joan,.i would love to hear from babs again.after my dads death in 1972 ,i left boarding school and doctor fenter let me and barbara go to ops to continue our education prior to leaving om.in them days you had to leave the town if youre husband/wife died.i recall terry dunster was barbaras boy friend at the time, any idea as to the where abouts of the dunsters, mom called aunty kitty and dad i think was called uncle colin or was it one of his sons, sound folks any way.

The Dunster's (Kitty and Tony) left OM to go live in Melkboschstrand in the 80's. Used to visit them there. I do not know where Colin & Terry went to.

Anyone?

This is a real blast from the past!  Valerie Barron (now Kidd and living in CT) phoned me (with great excitement!) about the site...heard about it through Ricky (her brother also living in CT).  Wonderful to hear the "news" and reminisce.  And yes I was an usherette at the "bioscope" (...been a long time since I was called sweet - thanks!!!). Please get in touch, Ann, would love to hear from you.  In short, I left Oranjemund early 1973 and went to Jo'burg - lived there for 26 years (time passes quickly?!?!), married with 3 boys (now 25, 24 and 18) and went to Uganda in 1998 with my husband as part of the startup team to launch MTN (I'm in IT).  Landed up staying there for over 7 years and returned to SA almost 2 years ago and living in Knysna (on the East head - go to www.pezula.com and weep).  My sister Joan is living in Irene (near Pretoria) and Margaret is living in Ashbourne (Derby, UK). I am in constant contact with the Dunsters (and Terry was never my boyfriend, Bobby... and I went to wghs not wBhs!) - all are still living in the Melkbosstrand area with the exception of Colin who is in Oz (Aderlaide). Sadly, Kitty died recently, but Tony is still strong.  The Barron's are also in CT with the exception of Linda who is living in Oz - but Val will be on this site soon and she can update us personally!  Robert - I visited Adeana a few years back but lost her email address - please will you ask her to make contact?  Thanks for the great site, Michael!

Hi Barbara,
I am so glad that you are happy and well and that things worked out for you, after having such a tragedy in your youth. I was only very young then, but I know the whole town felt for you.
So it wasn't a figment of my imagination then? You were indeed my " special usherette". You probably can't remember that you kept my seat for me every Saturday arvo, without fail. You would even kick other kids out if they got to it first. It's really funny what sticks in one's mind hey?

You seem to have had a very interesting life, living in Uganda etc, and now in Knysna. Lucky you ! A lovely part of the world. The memory banks are pretty vague, but I can also recall the Barrons, particularly Ricky. Was there also a Leslie Barron? ( I may be confused with Linda). I hope they are all well.

Look after yourself now Barbara, and thanks for the memory confirmation and for making one little kid a '' Happy Chappie'' every Saturday Matinee. ( sweetie !! ).

Just a HUGE thank you for all your help in finding Barbara.  I just can't  believe it after all these years.  I've have sent her a PM with a bit of an update, but, honestly, I think I am still reeling from the shock that she has been found!

Ann,

Re: Winstanley

I knew it was a mistake when we started looking for this tiny blonde package of dynamite!  ;)

Such is the effect Winstanley had on me that then as now, all my phobias have returned. I can't focus anymore. I have come out in a rash.
