My mom used to work in the old Butchers that was situated next to the post office, I think she worked with somebody called Jean De Klerk...
After school we would poip in there and spend time helping the Tatties push those white trolleys around and packed the meat with them.... In those days not much processing happened there, it was ll done at the abatoir..... It was fun playing in the Deep Freeze there....... the meat was ordered at 2 o'clock for the next day......... that building is now a cafe, Savannah Cafe......
for some strange reason I remember a metal toy plane in the tearoom there, don't know who it belonged to, but heck! it was fun to play with.....
:D
Strange how somethings trigger a memory.
I remember going into the Old Butchery with my Mum and thinking how, when I grew up, I would be a butcher because I was fascinated how he wrapped up the meat firstly in white paper then in newspaper. I was probably only 7 or 8 though so I do have an excuse!
Bobby mentioned Brenda Shephard on another thread and I couldn't help wondering if anyone else remembers the sausages designed by the butcher in the 70's for her dad. They were low fat I think as he had had a cholestrol/heart attack scare. They were marketed as shephard sausage, (as in Shephard's nek if I'm not mistaken), and became quite popular.
Peggy Munn was in charge at the butchery during the late seventies early eighties.

And my claim to glory is that I oversaw the transformation of the old butchery into Oranjemund's first furniture store. What a momentous occasion that was!
My Mom's sister auntie Marie Moller also used to work in the butchery in those day's. She sadly also have passed away...think it was in '97.
I have wat the abattoirorked in the butchery, blockman, from 1958 to 65. Was the 1rst polonymaker at the abattoir and responsible for the construction of the workshop and all the equipment. I was the one who introduced the Mule Derby Sausage, specially made o n l y for this occasion. When I left I produced about 30 different kind of sausages, cold meats plus bacon and smoked hams, tried to satisfiy every demand for all the nationalities and the mess.Unfortunately never managed to return,as promised Joco Mueller
Joco, do you have a recipe for Black pudding (Blutwurst?) and maybe a nice Bratwurst recipe?

???
Mike, I remember the toy plane, it was a good solid toy, Peggy Munn used to keep it in her office, I could never wait to get there to play with it. Mom used to bring us (I think just Stevie and me - you were in "big school" by then) to the butchery in the mornings before playschool... man I always wanted to be a pilot. it had twin props that actualy turned and a door that opened...
Joco,
Ja I am sure you must remember my father Dennis Symes.
Hi there,
Yes, I remember your father well. Was introduced to him by Bill Harper, at my time the manager at the abattoir.
