Well here is the jawbreaker..... Just read in the Republikein that There is no longer talk about building a Power station in Oranjemund, but rather in Walvis Bay..... ain;t that just sweet.... the gas is on our doorstep, but the Oranjemund economy will not be be getting much income from anything as everything will be happening offshore with tankers taking the gas to Walvis Bay and other markets....
This was the one last thing That I had hoped would "save" Oranjemund., If the Government and DeBeers are not gonna allow private ownership of the houses and property in Oranjemund..... and the Gas ain't coming ashore here..... then my friends ... we are screwed!!!!!!

Something afoot .. maybe got to do with shoring up WB economy , its after all the major port .. to me a pipeline straight to the nearest viable point makes sense ... shipping the gas .. that has an input cost ... Duh !!
There is a ship, the Symphony, doing an extensive survey off the coast of Luderitz at the moment. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
This is just what I mentioned the other day on a similar thread... We lose again!!!
Maybe it just makes more sense to build the power station close to where the power is needed......
Shorter H.T lines to and a harbour to ship the stuff in to build it........

I understand the wisdom of placing the Gas station at Walvis, due to all the new Uranium mines opening up in the ERONGO region, Namibia is currently the 4th largest uranium producer in the world..... and when all the current mines that have been approved come online, Namibia will be the worlds largest uranium producer..... so , Yes! The power will be needed up there..... it just irritates me, that we have been made to believe for the last 8 years that KUdu would be coming......

There was a ship doing oil and gas surveying just south of the border a couple of months back. They were not that far offshore either. I have no idea what they found but if they find significant deposits nearby perhaps the powers that be will have a closer look at this side.
A lot of the old timers from the 60's and 70's always maintained that there was oil to be found down here.... I guess diamonds took the priority.....
Strangely enough .. as a child .. I had this vision .. that there was oil in the area .. ....
The Russians are coming to Oranjemund. The Rusian news service, Rianovosti, (No not me) said that a Russian bank is going to help with finance to build a 800 megawatt station in Oranjemund. When this will happen, who know.

Russia's Gazprom in billion-dollar Namibia deal

WINDHOEK (AFP) — Russian energy giant Gazprom said Friday its banking unit had struck a one-billion-dollar (711-million-euro) deal with Namibian energy company Namcor to build a new power plant in Namibia.
Under the deal, Russia would build a power plant generating energy for both Namibia and South Africa, getting a foothold in the lucrative Kudu gas field, Namibia's only commercial field to date.
The deal was reached during a visit to Windhoek by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who left Namibia for Angola on Friday as he wraps up a four-nation African tour that has focused on tapping the continent's energy wealth.
"Our Namibian partners have offered us to organise a financing scheme to monetise gas resources," the head of Gazprom International Boris Ivanov told reporters in Luanda.
"The cost of the project is around 1.0 to 1.2 billion dollars," he said, adding that the price tag includes the power station, a pipeline and other infrastructure, with construction taking up to four years.
"It's not a large deposit but has enough reserves," he said about the Kudu field. "It's a pilot project in Namibia but its economic efficiency is very high."
Gazprombank said in a statement that much of the power generated would be exported to South Africa, which is struggling to meet its growing energy needs.
"There are plans to use gas from the Kudu field for the power plant. A considerable part of the electricity to be generated will be supplied to South Africa," the company said.
The Kudu field, located about 140 kilometres (85 miles) offshore, is estimated to contain 3.3 trillion cubic feet of proven reserves, but years of negotiations over the reserves have yet to yield concrete projects.
Medvedev and his counterpart President Hifikepunye Pohamba witnessed the signing of the agreement during his visit to Windhoek.
Windhoek and Moscow pledged closer cooperation, a joint communique said on Friday after the first visit by a Kremlin chief to the uranium-rich southern African nation.
"Agreement was also reached on the expansion of Russian investments to develop and introduce new large-scale projects in the Namibian economy, in particular in mining, oil exploration and energy," it said.
If the aim is to supply SA with Power, then O-mund would be the best choice to built a plant, for Namibia supply and shipping export Walvis is the better choice

A land Pipe Line leading through Ukaraine was cut off several times endangering the enegy supply to us....Ukraine was not prepared to pay the exorbiatant prices so the Russions shut off just like that.
Germany could have also invested in Kudu, but i hear nothing at all.
