Title: Tomorrow is the big Sports Day!
Post by: Michael Alexander on July 07, 2009, 04:27:20 PM
Well it's all happening in Oranjemund tomorrow. The School has been closed for the day and all the mines employees have been instructed to partake in the various sports activities being held throughout our town. These include, soccer, Netball, rugby, Angling , Snooker and Darts, Shooting...... at the end of the day, the mine will graciously be offering all 1400 of their current employees a  free braai and then over the next two days, there will be a Village of Learning exhibition in the power station..... the various mine departments will be displaying their various work situations and a lot of private enterprise people will be selling food and drink...... I drove past today and noticed that things were indeed happening down at the power station...

I also heard that the Snooker and dart were expecting 120 plus people around for a few games.... this is gonna be one heck of a community orientated interesting day....

It's great to see that the mine is doing things for the Oranjemund people again. Getting everyone together! Sounds like the good old days are rolling back ... Mike, is there a job and a house available for me ???

Heck! This should become a yearly event on the mines calendar ...

The weather today was just perfect, a slight breeze from the east, building up to a nice 30 degrees by midday..... the smell of spiced braaimeat wafted across the town.... the place seemed to have a buzz about it.... longtime since the town felt like this...... I popped over to the Bowling club and took a few snaps this morning..... also got a snap from Gary of Gary for you Sheena..... Gary insists......

I believe people had to be turned away from the snooker and darts as the place was packed.... the beach is also jam packed with anglers catching Steenbrass...

The afternoon culminates at the Rec Club, where more than 4200 pieces of braaimeat are being prepared.....

Well what a fun day it was...

From personal experience I'm sure many others will be mozing around the VOL tomorrow with a severely uncomfortable amble. For the unfit, the first games of the day (referring to the more athletic sports) were easy going... hell, this will be a breeze... the later games were a different story.
The squash was well attended, about 13 players and each played 8 games of 10 mins, American scoring. All points scored went towards a total for your section/department. So the more points you scored in 10 mins the better. Thus by the end of play many were already showing signs of the awkward stride ahead for tomorrow, that is if they make it out of bed ok...

Definitley feel this should be a regular (annual at least) event.

Ouch, the butt...

I pop in at the S&D. The place was packed. They do not know the game, but they played. The scores on the snooker table was great, not of sinking the balls, but as faults. The darts went well. Everybody enjoyed it. The best dressed was the Snooker Master, Francois Carsten - Bowtie the lot. And all on soft drinks..... Spin off's: Thank you Mr GM!

Think Mr GM is a helluva guy and should give himself a pat on the back.  Sounds like a start to the old Oranjemund is returning in some way...................

Now I am more homesick than ever....
