Remember the floats?
Each club made one on a car and spent weeks... months... ahead of the time designing, creating, building these MAGNIFICENT floats!
There were parades of all shapes and sizes - karate club, horse riding club, etc.
Starting from who knows where, all through town, to the Mule Derby! Where there were endless happenings! The horse and pony races as well as rides! (I remember falling my ass off - ending up in hospital for three days - racing a pony with the wrong girth!)
Father Christmas arriving in a different style each time!
Damn! Those were GOOD times!
Just the other day Cameron asked why don't we have parades in Oranjemund and I was able to tell her that we did used to many years ago. I can also remember spending hours at the soccer club whilst my dad and friends built this huge soccer ball for one of the parades - I must go and take the photo's out to have a look at and show the girls - luckily the photo's are just down the road at my folks house!

micheal , that float that you were talking about , i remember that float very well , i forget the year but i am sure we could work it out as it was a world cup year , and argentina won it that year. that was an impressive float , my father also spent many nights working on it. if you ever find those photos you will see a small kid sitting on the top of the ball holding up a cup ( meant to be the word cup) that kid is me ( they figured i looked like diago maridonna). i remember that the soccer club won the prize for the best float that year , i also remember that i had to duck all the damn telephone lines and other electrical wires over the streets

The soccer club used to be a lot of fun back then, I can also remember drinking red grape juice and listening to UB40's Red,red wine after some or other tournament.
There are a couple, ok 2 or 3, of the guys that my dad coached still living in O'mund and they still refer to him as "Uncle" Mike.
By the way, couldn't help but notice you mocking Paul about his spelling - I'm not sure whether you were responding to Mike (Michael) or myself (Michele)!

There are two I remember most (I remember the soccer ball) and those were the Gun Club's massive gun and the Snooker 'n Darts massive board with huge darts on a snooker table or something...

firstly i admit i made a spelling mistake and only realised it afterwards ( dont tell paul)
your dad will always be 'uncle mike' (although the last time i called him that he gave me a rather disturbing look) . i actually wanted to make a 'new post' about the soccer training and the team with your dad, there were many people who past through those ranks , and we had a rather good team.
that was more than likely an inter-mine competition you can recall. do you remember the team that called themselves the 'festive spirits '

Promise not to tell Paul about the spelling but hate to tell you that he seems to be spending just as much time as you on this site so will probably have read it! I see he has resorted to posting to himself, shame! (Hi Paul - still waiting for you to help with the gardening!) I actually wonder just how much work is getting done at Spar what with regular visits to the site from Mike, Shola and myself!
I don't quite remember any of the teams names but the name doesn't quite surprise me! I do remember getting flags and caps from one of the intermines events that was held in Oranjemund and there was a big dinner in the Oshetushamu hall next door to the soccer club (okay now my spelling is up the pole!)
Am going to have to go and show my folks how this forum thing works and then they can start posting as well - hope you've told your folks about the site.
Will take a look at your guesthouse website now - I'm sure Mike won't mind adding a link as long as you also advertise his site!

hey guys brandon vd westhuizen here, the floats rocked, my old man was always involved with the horse riding club or yacht club, i must dog out the picks of him riding his horse surprise alonfside one of the floats dressed as a cowboy..hahahaha

If this is the right chappy do you remember the night I told you not to bring the bottle of coke into the lounge room as you would spill it and if you did i would rub your nose in it? and what did you do, exactly what i told you not do, so ...... i rubbed your nose in it!! and remember when we were running agains the cupboard doors and crashing into them and your sister went right through???
YES THAT WAS ME...guilty..never did listen and to this day have to drink at least 2 litres of coke......still love the stuff!!!
those were days gone by......i used to beg the folks that i was almost old enough and responsible enough to stay home alone......hahahaaa
i loved the freedom of space that town used to provide with the safety to go with it
