I'm starting this topic .. as stories of what our parents got up to in their young wild days still sit in my head ... the early days .. stories of a part of town called "texas" wild parties .. leaving parties and going straight to work . fights .. love affairs .. the do's ,, the functions ,, the dressing up .. the clothes of a bygone era .. the dancing slippers that women folded into their handbags .. they would arrive at a dance in the stillettoes and don the slippers in order to glide around the floor .. Robert , thats how your Mom could glide .. a pair of silver or gold dancing slippers ... First picture .. damm the names have slipped me .. but I will name the picture "tres elegant " my mom on the right .. they knew how to dress in those days ... names Kitty mc Call Bob Mead and Mother ... correct me but thats what comes to me now .. I will continue to post more as I get time ... and ask you all to submit same .. our parents , remembering and honouring them and also seeing them at play ..
How about some outfits from the New Year do's?
Vikings - Biff Hannabuss, John Weait and Arthur Greenway (Dad); their wenches - Joyce Greenway (Mum), Eileen Hannabus, Gladys Weait.
Don't know who won but I understand they used to be amazing events!
This one, I think, was 1965. I believe the flagon was filled with something alcoholic!

Man! Sandy is right, they knew how to dress in style in those days... My father still insists on wearing a jacket and tie to Lodge, Functions or a dinner out........ Just the way the Queen would have it,,,, To Order gentlemen! :D

When our folks would abandon us at home in the evening times to go to the SPortsmans, they would always return with those little packets of biltong and a small coke for each of us..... guilt compensation, no wonder I am overweight today..... ;D

One of the NewYears parties ...
Oops wrong button .. One of Myparents new years parties of long time ago ... Once again pity a lot of pictures got lost and only a few remain .. Some of You May remember Archie and Sue Gunn ... I unearthed a picturre of archies first wife Maisie ... she would have been one of the many " Aunties " in my life .. it was not meant to be so .. when my Mom went into labour with me .. and I understand it was a long one , I weighed 10 and a quarter pounds at birth explains it all .. Maisie Gunn was booked in for I understand a sinus surgery on the same day ... She still wished my Mom well and Mom to her good luck .. something about Maisie giving her watch to Mom to keep ( grey cells are rattling here ) .. Maisie never came back from the theatre .. complications with aenasthetic ... Mom had two major events on one day .. an arrival in the form of me and a departure in the form of Maisie .. I include a pic with her as well ...
More ..

The night of Champagne and Blue cheese ..
One night in the early hours an after party trawled into our home ... Mom Dad and the gang ... Mom must have been bored with the company or maybe she was just in a silly mood so she woke me up and said she would teach me about appreciation of the finer things in life .. at the age of 9 ?? .. So there was I now seated on the floor in front of her ... She had on this reversible evening coat .. one side a beautiful satiny emerald green and the other side something that looked like a christmas tree . that christmas tree was never worn on the outside .. being reversible it had inside and outside pockets and boy were they deep cos out of the inside pockets she fished two bottles of champagne and two wedges of blue cheese .. the trick she said was to take a bit of blue cheese and then follow with a healthy swig of bubbly .. Not a bad idea at all !! the blue cheese was a bit too powerful for my yet uneducated palate so I snuck the pieces given to my dog waiting expectantly on the side .. Yup between the two of us we finished the two bottles of bubbly .. I was by now very unsteady and had difficulty getting up .. but Mother .. she seemed to have hollow legs stood up daintily on the high heels , no unsteadiness and walked me to my room .. " good night son " and off she went to party more .. I remember my dad saying that she had a cast iron constitution , many a time partying the toughest guys including him under the table . A true party girl !! and a memory of her in one of her crazy moments ....
Had we but known how in fashion those old outfits with all the bling-things that were worn by our mom's would be today, we would have kept it all in tissue paper. They never went to a dance in jeans and T-shirts, except when it was a house party. No, the evening gowns were plucked from the closet, clutch bags and all the other tooties that went with it. And those beads they used to wear around their necks!
Even some of the "crimpelene" stuff is back in fashion now! ( CRIMP-TO-MY LEAN outfits we called them later - most of the chubby tannies also wore them - looked like they had gone through a few hailstorms and the dents & bulges all showed, but who cared? They were in fashion.) My goodness...... those siletto's they wore with the sharp point toes. You could actually kick a snake in the a.... and not hit any other part of it's body. And then they still managed to keep their balace on them after a few glasses of whatever they had. Classy stuff, man! I still remember a dress my mom had - bright canarie yellow and a pair of gold high heeled platform shoes (I think those were also a hit in the late 70's).
It's true - what goes around, comes around.
More pics .. One of my Moms Gang was Margaret Pearson .. all I see is a naughty look on Margarets face .. wonder what the two of them got up to in their heydays ?? Also a Picture of My Godfather Uncle Sandy Laughlin in his young days ..
FOR SHEENA ,, HERE A PIC OF YOUR NAN , MY AUNTIE JEAN ,, BEFORE SHE EVEN WENT GREY .. AND MORE SO I DID NOT KNOW AUNTIE JEAN SMOKED OR AT LEAST I DO NOT REMEMBER IT .. BUT THERE SHE IS LIGHTING UP A FAG ....
Come on Own up ... who inserted the "its a beautiful thing " smiley into the story of the the night of champagne and blue cheese .. Thanks , I take it as a compliment to a truly amazing woman ....
Got it! technology ... just inserting the smileys ... Meve Rydoff
Here some more .. My Mom singing at one of the Do's .... she did it in her very wild early days and then just stopped ( dont know why) .. I remember Uncle Arthur Davis had some tapes of her singing .. I remember " Bye Bye Blackbird " Goody Goody etc " and some others if I really stir up the grey cells ( afraid of the resultant soup ) a beautiful soft voice with the remants of the scottish accent ...
As I started to post i got this warning .. this topic has not been posted in for 120 days etc etc .. well i will keep it alive and hope that others have also got more to contribute .. i just been catching snatches of the movie " Mrs Henderson " one of the songs that came up was " Goody goody ' oneof the songs my mom sung yonks ago .. such a pity those tapes have in all likelyhood disapeared ... another equally strange thing i noticed while going hrought he pics again mentioning My Mum and Margaret Pearson .. thick as thieves and i think so damm mischevious together .. Observe the pic they two holding hands ..

I think Mary Mead married Tony Hockney (the taller brother) if I remember correctly. We have some old copies of the Newsletter at home and I'm sure there's a story about their wedding.
BTW. Toni Hockney and family reside in EDGEMEAD.
Toni plays guitar in a local band in our local pizza joint in EDGEMEAD.
Leon Sumter
Would that be Verdi's?
yes, Verdi's.
the Edgemead shopping center is currently undergoing a complete makeover with more shops being added amongst others an 'ocean basket' fish restuarant and a coffee shop.
Dave married Mary; Tony married Miriam (?) Gilbert Kermis' sister as I recall.
On the nail Cherry - saw their photograph in one of the old 70s newsletters Mike had put out during the reunion.
Goodness, never knew this ! Toni married Gilies sister ? Miriam is obviously from Gerry Kermis' 1st marriage.
Hi Sandy,
That pic of your mom singing certainly brought back the memories. She had a superb voice and a very pleasant Scottish lilt. Her repertoire included not only the pop songs of the day but also some old Scottish ballads. The songs that stand out for me were I Belong to Glasgow (or, more properly, Ah Belang tae Glasgie) which always had everyone in full chorus and the old Harry Lauder ballad: Keep Right On To The End of the Road.
She had to be almost dragged on stage but once she got there she was the entertainer superb. On one occasion, I think it may have been a New Year's Eve Ball, she and a band member called Poingdestre (never known as anything else but Pointy) put on an impromptu double act that had everyone in stitches. Pointy was a very affable, short little guy with clownish features who played the concertina boere orkes style. To hear him launch into the Glasgae song - played in tikkie draai manner - with your mom was somehow or other so ridiculous that the crowd roared for more.
She always featured large at New Year's Eve with a rendering of Auld Lang Syne that had everyone gulping with emotion. In fact your mom was something of a celebrity in town and always in demand on social occasions.
Thanks again for the memories.
Regards,
Bob.
THANK YOU BOB FOR THAT LOVELY MEMORY I STILL HEAR THAT LOVELY SINGING VOICE ECHOING IN MY MEMORY -- I TRUST YOU ENJOYED THE PHOTOS ...
Pointy Poingdestre .. yes indeed a comical man .. mom worked at the Veg market in the early days with his wife Sue before she moved to shopping center ( still remember visiting her there when I was 2 bricks and tickey high ) , now there was another mismatched couple ,, Sue a tall strong woman with a big strong earthy voice .. her hubby pointy short .. mutt and jeff .. many stories of misadventures of pointy .. one night he wanted to go out with his pals .. Sue said no !! so he said well he's going to bed ,, sulked off in huff to one of the boys rooms and locked door ( ha ha intent was to sneak out of bedroom window ) waited a respectable time to do the sneak out of window thing .. jumped out of window to get the shock of his life .. big Sue second guessing him had filled one of those huge zinc wash tubs with boiling water and placed it below the window .. the howls of pain alerted Sue , who then went out and escorted him back into the house .. a recollection from my Mom ..
