I'm glad that chippendales thing has been cleared up...
I still get people coming up and telling me that they remember my performance, at one point I was even thinking of putting up a poster to put people straight:
Chippendale wannabe = DARRYL
Innocent brother who had nothing to do with it = WARREN

Youth club Eric Davis Hall, opposite the cafe, oh yes the den of inequity for all teenagers and feared but tolerated by all parents.
I remember leaving one evening and discovering Kannie Worry camping on the circle in the centre of town one holiday.
We would gather round and sing songs with him as Cassies had closed and he was making a stand about holidays or something.
I was there a coulple of night before they managed to move him.

I have very vague memories, of Uncle Bill taking us to a hall (in the late 60's)  where very cool Big kids, (i think i was about 5) were painting the interior with pychodelic glo in the dark murals and bands playing (Castle bros), I think the building was a glass structure painted with white paint on the outside. A huge afro in green comes to mind. Oh my god I'm old.
This was the era of space exploration and before they changed the recipe of coke (brown cow, anyone?)  I think someone else was referanced this somewhere else on the site.

Barbara, it sounds like the only part of your tale you forgot to mention, was the sweet smell that permeated the room.... heheheh  ;)

Who can remember when the youth club was behind the power station, before it moved to the Eric Davis hall in 1972?

Who can remember the names of some of the youth club bands and their members?

I remember Stephen Huntley was a brilliant guitarist, but always seemed to wonder off in a Hendrix twang, leaving the rest of the band just standing there!

thats the one I referred to above, my memories of it as an impressionable child made the Eric Davis Hall a disapointment.

No - Brown cow was coke and dispirin.
It was a potentent, pleasant drug in those days. (stimulant slightly hallucegenic, I believe)
Many kids apparently claimed they were taken by surprise as dispirin was dropped into there drinks by other party goers.
but it resulted in the recipe being changed to prevent whatever the chemical reaction was, no more cheap unsuspected raves.
O f course this was before my time.

Come now Sandy you should remember that?    I remember that luminous painting at the back of the hall L.S.D "Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds" . The Castle's played in a band  there in my time. Was that not also behind or rather to the side of the power station?

The place was later known as Ali's Emporium and now houses the J & P contractor's offices.  The original doors are still there, maybe Micheal can post a photo!  I seem to remember years ago the doors had pictures of the Beatles painted on them?  I was too young to go there but it always looked interesting.

Rather late than never!

Yes that is the building - Sandy on the nail it was 1971 - Diana you are right the Castle boys band did play there and I remember the luminous wall  - I think the youth club was moved because of the proximity to the houses in the area.

Ja nee Ronelle - it did get the heart racing a bit - what about the brilliant white teeth and fantastic tans!

Keep well
Richard

Ok! I have been asked for clarity on the Youth Club,

1) Where was it before it moved to the Community Hall?
2) When was the Community Hall built?
3) On what date was the Community hall changed into the Youth Club?

I know that there is a Newsletter from the era regarding the start of the Community Hall, but I don't have the year...

Cheers and Thanks

Mike

The answer to question 1 : is in the posts just above this.....a hall connnected to the power station somehow....if looking at the power station from the main offices it would be to the right to-wards the back. Facing the main buildings. There is a photo posted of this somewhere on this forum. Was known as Bop Sessions back then. Not sure but as to Qyestion 3 : I would think it moved 71/72 as I remember going to both locations. Mavis would know the answer to Question 2 : Guessing here early 60's. Other than the Rec Club most of O'munds expansion took place in the early 60's   drinking-41

Diana, I think the building you are referring to was alongside the then Town Electric workshop with the old fire station at the rear. When we arrived in 1981, the front section was being used as the Refrigeration Workshop, whereby the toilets and kitchen section was used by the electricians as their tea room.

Talking about the refrigeration section and for those who can remember them, Jenny and myself had tea with Rose & Charlie Summerton this morning, they have recently moved into Gordon's Bay, just up the road from us.
