For months this eternal light kept bothering me, I drive past it on a daily basis, all hours of the day, this eternal light never goes out ! (must go past during a power outage) .... anyhow, as you can see, it is an old style light and remains on 24/7 ...... can any of you locals take a guess where it might be?
I wonder how many energy saving bulbs that have been replaced around the town would consume the same energy as this ray of brightness?
I guess if there was still a town electrical dept..... this might have been spotted sooner....
are-you-there
Looking at the type of fitting and trying to remember where these were still in use, I'll take a guess and say somewhere along 5th Ave
Nope! That ain't it..... :nono1:
Could it be outside Mike's house........ sorriso2
Nope!...... Stennie, u coming to the bowls 2morrow nite? Clint's also coming with!!!
Mmm the eternal light ... thought it was something mystical ... only to find its an eternal power street lamp ... maybe we should tap into its secret of being able to remain on 24 /7 and keeping itself sustained without drawing attention to itself vis using power ... ha ha
Then what about 7th Ave between 2-7th & Jasper House....????
We have similar here in some areas in CT ,,, council worked out its cheaper to just pay the 24/7 than to contend with continual cable theft and replacement cost .. a live cable is not as inviting as one switched off ... Uuughh .. these damm illegal metal dealers .. all ought to have their hands chopped off ...
Focus Michael Focus...don't look into the light.
Mike V, those are them SOX90 or SOX70 lights... 5th Avenue all the way out of town and Mine Road and 8th Avenue between 8th & 6th Streets had them. They give of a red clolour when they first strike and go orange when they warm up.
Mike A, how about the park at North Road substation where they closed the section of 5th Avenue that joined into Mine Road at an angle? Its now a grass area.
Nope Andy. this light is kinda "hidden" away in a place that no longer serves any purpose, I kept noticing it above a treeline....... always tickled me orange that it is always on.....
catmusic
Yes Andy D, the old Sodium Vapour type I think. Is the lamp post by North Road sub still hidden amongst the trees where the old road used to be or was it removed?
Another thought for Mike's Light, what about near the reservoir tank area....????
Nope, that were'nt it..... I was just wondering, once we disclose it's location, if the powers that be will send somebody to send somebody to that part of town to switch the blerrie thing off!
A place that serves no purpose to me would be somewhere like the old abattoir, but no... no such fittings there.
The light is always on... the other street lights usually work in groups or streets, sometimes 2 or 3 streets controlled from 1 daylight switch which has a bypass switch to switch them on during daytime to do repairs.
This light appears to be a single light on a daylight switch where the bypass may have been forgotten on. The pole I am thinking of is secluded, well, off the street at least. How about 13th Avenue flats, the flats next to the rugby club? I recall there being a lonesome lampost between the garages and the flats.
Do you remember it Mike V?
If that is it the place of no purpose could be the Voortrekkers, I don't know if the still operate...
At last!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we shower, young Andrew in Energy saving light bulbs..... it is indeed at the 13th ave flats behind the Voortrekkers....
Next Question, how long before OTMCO sends somebody to "fix" it.... er, turn it off... ?
Mike A you can't turn it off go check tomorrow when the powers off there will be no change would you like to now more?????
202
Yes Andy D, of course, now I remember...........
I know my memory is not what it was but I have a feeling that the light in question could be fed from the sewerage station at the back of the flats adjacent to the garages there. I'm sure there is a daylight switch on the outside of the building.
Also, I'm sure that some of the occupants of the flats requested that the light be disconnected at some stage because it was too bright and they could not sleep
Mind you, I might be completely wrong...............
Mike A, you might just be surprised at how quickly they respond!!!
You've noticed the reactions to the "dying grass" and "dying trees" threads on the forum... so who lets see.
How about you put up a poll as to how soon it will be attended to... within 3 days, by the end of the week, by the end of next month, by Christmas...????
Guys this light cannot be turned off
Will you all just listen to my brover now. Hello1
Was it not the Lord said............. LET THERE BE LIGHT!!! .....................maybe he has something to do with it...... image04

Mike A I bid to differ I can also put off that light but why should I, you have named the light never to be put off
And on a LIGHTER NOTE..........just kidding.......... image04
Hey Mike if you looked more closer you would have found some washing on a line and somebody's kid playing there,so thats why the lightis up and running day and night.Somebody is staying for free, free housing free water free elec and lights etc etc... image04 did i say too much now catmusic image04
mmm do we hear a creaking sound .. coud it be thin ice beneath Adriaans feet for maybe saying a truth ??? catmusic .. actually interesting you bring up the subject .. culture of nonpayment ... not that at any time I comb all under the same comb .. there are many good folk out there .. but strangely enough the demanders and yes in so many ways expecters and receivers of the " free" are in no way adverse to screwing their own over , vis demanding high rentals for backyard shacks , electricity , phonetime , anything in fact ... the so called ubuntu which should be and altruistic way of life , thinking of those less fortunate and being as neighbourly and generous as situation can provide seems null and void .. methinks thhey just following example of the fatcat parasitic politicians ... ..
Go Solar, Southern Africa has the best location in the world for this......
10 / 10 Mike you got the answer correct .. THAT LIGHT IS DRIVEN BY SOLAR POWER ...
It might be Sandy!! but they are usually timed to go off in the day time, there is a big push in OZ for us to go solar.
Solar water heaters installed on the roofs, and solar power panels, big incentive rebates to those people that can afford the thousand dollar installation.............................
Ok would you guys like to know how it works?

How this light works I got the magic
In a dramatic turn of events, residents living in close proximity to the Eternal light contacted our offices this morning to inform us that the eternal light is no longer with us.
We sent our top photographer to the location to see if the rumour was indeed true.
Long time German resident, Mr. Iblym Eshkom, told this reporter that he had first noticed that the eternal light was no longer functioning whilst out on a walk with his family last night. He further commented that his entire family was in mourning and were deeply saddened that the eternal light would no longer see the light of day.....
What have you been up to Alfred...............???????????
Now that the eternal light has gone out.................................
We have got problems...............................
Big problems.........................
I ask WHY DID WE MESS WITH THE LIGHT...................................
was all this necessary...................................
this light did no harm...............................
shame the light is out..............................
I must go fix it
Must I come back and show you what to do Alfie...............??????

Sandy thanks for the correction thats what I meant to wright
Hey Alfie seeing you are a newfound poet how about one about the water like this one ....every night you want to shower, but there is no power to water your flower....... image19
Adriaan things like that happen only once a year so you will have to wait a while rooster
The rooster be the proverbial flash in the pan ...
Was it my imagination or did I see that the ternal light is survived by its sibling on the other side of the complex? The light that I originally thought was being referred to...? At first I was unaware of THE eternal light...
All Hail Flicker, the "other" eternal light...... Ahem! Pics please as proof......
:nono1:
Ok.... ahem... apologies... I didn't check the time too well, it was early evening and the other street lights were coming on... so it's not "ETERNAL" but it still lights at night.
THE eternal light though is completely kis-boutjies and doesn't even glow in the dark...!
So there it is, the light went out.
