Title: Foofie slide structure!
Post by: Michael Alexander on September 19, 2007, 06:38:24 PM
In the 70's there was that black headgear structure you climbed at the xmas tree, before the new school was built, then you climbed into those red cars and shot down.... Now this is a big faint memory I have, but if anyone out there has a photo of this structure, please email me! PLssssss!

Mike,

Not so much a picture of the structure, but some close ups can be seen in the Dec-1978 Newsletter.

I remember them putting Graphite powder on that sucker to make it faster, lotsa fun, lotsa mess !! :)

Best Regards

Hi. You should ask my dad. georgrufswa. I'm sure he has a couple of pics. I remember it being built. What a sensation in the 70s. Maybe 74?

Not really.  We lived in Oranjemund from '73 and I left at end '82 after finishing matric.  I know your surname and I know about your dad (him and me have been chatting on LiveVideo also - he got me 'hooked' there with his amazing video's and photos).  My dad was Big Dirk, a policeman.

But, being me  ..........  I chat up a storm with everybody, so........

Hi everybody. I agree with Barbara. The only foofie slide I remember from the 70's, was the one in the desert.

Hi Patrick
We used to have some fun out there. If I remember correctly I went there with Ronnie Young, Carrots Wilson and the gang. I am sure Marie Quinton and Jeff, Michael Gillespie were to name but a few who used to use it.

I think the fufieslide behind the quaries was taken down because some kids got hurt. It was quite high. I remember going out there with some pals in the morning. Bare-foot. Two hours later we were runnung because sand was gertting hot in the sun. lol

Sure. It's the only one I know myself. Exept the one built on the old rugby field, on which as far as I believe, the new school has been built.

hi georg jnr, really good to meet you even though its via the net, your dad i have had several conversations about all things oranjemund and more,he often mentions you,i mite have got cheryl mixed up with a family that were our neighbours in om with a surname of quantrill,if so i apologise for that mistake, any way good friend,i hope to see you contributing to the forum,im sure you will have great memories of om,cheers

I remember Mrs Quantrills baking. It was so different to my mothers German food.
I also remember the athmosphere about her house during east wind weather. The house was well shelterd by many high trees, which kept the garden and house a lot cooler than any other place I knew in om.
Thanks for the impulse. This is so much fun on this site, I'm already addicted. Must make sure I get rid of the spiders and their growing on my legs. hihihi

I don't know if you remember my sister Karen, she went out with Johnny Young (Ronnie's older brother) and she was also friends with Carrots.

Cheers

Hi Barbara

I think it was your brother Stephen who was in school with me if I'm not mistaken, is he still around. Karen is very well and living in Tableview. When I was a teenager, myself and Nicky Hodge also asked Karen to pierce our left ear (it was cool at the time). I will never forget the day she did it, also just a block of ice and a freakin' long needle. I took it like a man but poor Nicky passed out and knocked his head on the basin  :36_2_35:  I actually thought he was dead after the fall but he made it. (Just pulling your leg Nicky) Where are you living now, still in RSA or elsewhere? If I remember correctly, you guys were three kids. I remember you had a sister but I'm not sure whether she was younger or older than you. I'll tell Karen you send your regards.

Cheers

Patrick

i did post this once before but for those who may not have seen it heres the foofie slide of the 60's....not sure exactly where it was only that it was a big hill ha ha.near the beach....well there was a lot of sand

:emot19:I fell off having just set off at the highest level once, and also got my hair tangled in the rope. But what fun it was.

Hi Bev.
Nice pic.
I think the slide Michael meant, was the one you could sit in with about ten people. They built it for the Xmas-fair back in the mid 70s. Remeber the presents, gocarts a.s.o.... This was on the school rugby field where they've put the new schoolbuildings. Try google-earth. You can see it well there.
Your slide is probably the one behind the quarry. This was in the desert, therefor all of the sand.

Yep ! Georg is spot on, they were red things you sat in, the structure was black, like a mines headgear....situated on the corner of the "Old" rugby field.......

Hi,

Are you guys talking about the foofie slide / cable car structure ? I remember something like it being on the OPS  school grounds where they used to hold the CDM christmas tree every year. It was something like a +/- 10mr high structure with stairs leading up. The ride length was something like 80 meters long.

Carl.
