Title: The Flood is on the way!!!!
Post by: Michael Alexander on January 29, 2010, 11:16:11 AM
Well, some of you might know by now..... the Vaal dam sluices have been open after the dam reached 117% volume....... first time in 17 years....... the Naute dam on the fish river, and the hardap are also both full and pouring out water.,.... in fact I believe the river has already risen, but with the Vaal coming to the party, we are expecting the "Big " one to arrive at the mouth in the coming weeks...... they always said every 7 years, but I fear that this one is long time coming........

The Newspapers are now full of articles..... some sources in the Flood dept are speculating that the peak of the impending flood will be 2 m higher than the previous record..... meaning that a 7m crest is expected......

I don't believe it myself, as Oranjemund only lies 6m above sea level.....

Alfie, Andrew and all other budding photographers from Omund Online, please have your camera;s on standby..... we have work to do.......

catmusic Somebody mentioned that somebody was getting paid an obscene amount of dosh to remove some rails....

But then again, this was a bar source and one always hears vastly inflated figures in such establishments....

Delays at the bridge today, as the workers move frantically to remove the barriers from the bridge....

Sources from the prefect camp at Brandkaros (near Beauvallon) , claim the water has risen by 3 m there at 05.00am this morning....

Eyewitness's at Keimoes have informed site members that water cleared their bridges yesterday....

We are also led to believe that there is a mud plume extending into the Atlantic ocean which spans about 30km westwards.....

Looking forward to seeing some of the photographs.

I don't think it's going to be that big but I've been wrong before, Remember there's a big tap by the sea so will it build up I don't know

I wasn't there during the '88 flood, just remember the mid 70's flood (think it was '76), which was huge - covered the whole golf course, and and island formed in the sea at the mouth. We swam to the island then.  That year Alexander Bay was also heavily flooded, some friends dove off the rugby posts into the water there, that's how high the water was.

RE: Media Briefing with regard to the Access Road to and from Oranjemund during the Orange River Flood 2010

The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) Oranjemund branch Chairperson, Mr IUD Kalenga, met with Senior Namdeb diamond security  officials to discuss the Orange river flood situation and the closure of public access roads to the remote town.

It was agreed that clear information should be disclosed to the general public as how persons in possession of valid diamond area permits will be escorted to and from Oranjemund via the Chameis/Luderitz road whilst the Rosh Pinah (North Bank) road was closed.

Daily Escort times during this abnormal situation are as follows"

Daily 07h00 and 16h00 only

REQUIREMENTS:

1)   Make sure that you are in possession of a valid diamond security Permit.
2)   Your vehicle is in a good condition to travel on this tough road.
3)   The use of sedan vehicles is not recommended
4)   Make sure that you are on time, Strictly 07h00 and 16h00 from both sides.

SOurces in the Aeronautical wildlife rescue dept informed this website, that the red squirrel has indeed been airborne, chasing a number of gemsboks onto the larger Grootderm Island just west of Hohenfels..... a number of the younger boks were already up to their knees in mud and water and not much could be done to save them...... however the source reckons that up to 50 of the animals were coerced onto dry land, but unfortunately two herds were to stubborn to follow the rest.......

I guess there is only so much that can  be done....

Wonder if anyone out there has pics of this operation in progress...

Other items of note were the fact that the Mine schoolbus that takes the Kids to Alex Bay school was turned back at the bridge today,.,,, rather be safe than sorry....
