I'm sure the singer Donovan had a song in the seventies with the words "They call it mellow yellow" somewhere in the verse.
Colour wise, I suppose it's what one was smoking at the time that determined what they saw...............
Definitely yellow.........and I was too little to be smoking anything image203

From Longtime Oranjemund Resident, Freddie Ahrens.
"I Remember what we did or mayby not you but we (I use to take my friends the following day to the field with all the rides (I knew where to switch the power on) and gave them all free rides. The problem was, one guy had to stay at the on/off switch and some times it did not work so lekker out. To get in was easy because it started slowly but to get out while it is moving and no one is at the controle........you can imagine.. some one must jump out (to stop the machine) and suffer a few injuries with the soft landing."
trex-073

Sandy, this photo was taken in the sixties when the Mule Derby was still where 13th Avenue is now. The trees in the background to the left of the photo is the Hydroponics/Parks and Gardens and the other trees on the right looks like the Abattoir.
The photo from Dave Hucker is a mystery. Where was that taken? I can remember those tracks laid out but that was at the old Rugby Field which is now the Grade 7 classrooms. It looks like the Cricket Club behind the pavilion and commentator's booth.
Nada I would have been in that age group in the 60"s , from the suits the men wore seems early 60's .. born 56 ... remember the 13th ave location only too well , Brent Olckers used to stay almost opposite the Mule derby site , we used to sneak in there when it was "off bounds " Old Mr Hawkins from parks and gardens used to patrol there regularly chasing kids away ...
Nada that photo you puzzling about could have been from a christmas tree party , it was held on the old rugby field regularly ...
Could aslo have been the soccer field layout was sort of similar ,,then again the rugby club had a brand new building done later ...
I thought the Dave Hucker pic was taken on the Old Soccer Field, now the current Hockey field..... I think it had to do with an old Newsletter I had scanned a while back that had a similar pic in it
Mike the more I look the more it looks like the old soccer field , only thing that throws one is the club house , thats an old one .. soccer club also got upgraded somewhere in the late 60's to 70's , cos I remember the clubhouse before I left was a lot bigger with a huge lounge entertainment and viewers balcony area ..
Yes, I think this is the soccer field. It is the "new" Rugby Club in the background before the clubhouse was enlarged to its current sizein the late 70s early 80s. I cannot remember that pavilion though, maybe it was erected just for the Christmas Tree.
Two more added for intrest
Oh boy reading about the dragon oh boy, my dad made a movie (cini) of when I was just a tot and on the dragon was myself, my twin sister, Stef smiling and I was crying.....really did not like it at all. However, the balloons, when they let the balloons go oh boy I was there nappy and all trying to catch them and then them poping when they touched the "green" dry grass! so many good memories, I remember when Wendy Masterton and I got dressed up in fancy "hat" and how Mike Alexander made the ghost house! oh boy what fun we did have.......
