One of the few clubs in town thats booming is the Angling club, they had a competition down at the beach yesterday morning, followed by a pair of sheep on the spit at the clubhouse, only 3 fish were caught, but there were more than a 100 people there.... good to hear these things.....
;D
Mike ask Harold Schoeman, I must be the only long registered paid up member that never went to Meob Bay or had a rdrink in the angling club bar.
Ha.... Clive, that snothing, feel for my dad, who for some stupid reason back in the late 70's joined about 25 clubs......as it was so cheap, he only went to 4 of them and to this day still does not know where the Hockey or Jukskei club is...... ;D
Know the feeling, anyway while I was there saw it as a bit of a community service to keep the clubs going.
And.. now there's not much community left to service the clubs....
How many people are aware that at it's peak , with all the clubs affiliated to the rec club, with all having there own bars, that there were 48 different bars to drink at by 1982, this excludes sands for obvious reasons...... ;)
I can believe it, even though my parents didn't frequent any.
Clint Ebstein and myself went on a pubcrawl in the Sands hotel a good few years back... cultural thing... more than 120 bars in that place, not a white face anywhere, but everyone was friendly and ever so happy to see us, invites to each bar... we made about 16 bars...... got married thrice to some big mama's then crawled ot there in the wee hours..... what a night... and it's a pity more whites don't give it a bash.... you kinda feel like a tourist in there....

have had similar experiences in grahamstown, coffeebay(transkei), and swaziland and up north(Namibia) during the elections-know what you mean........
Hi Clive, there is a tar road all the way to Meob now or at least part of the way,why didn't you go to Meob?
After my Boet poached my Rods & Reels etc, I ended up going down to the Gun club more & more often, and just never gor round to buying another set of gear.
mike if i am not mistaken there was apoint in time when oranjemund was in the guinness book of records for having the most bars per capita
I still rate the Stauchlager as the best bar in town......
How many of you have been to "The Inn on the Square" pub in Oranjemund, it's been there for at least 22 years! Do you know where it is?
???
IS this photo taken at Meob? What tractor is this? Was there ever prospecting or mining done at Meob?
long time ago ,But It looks like the old cat rusting away next to the shed where the landies were kept and serviced . Meob bay .
ONe night we came off shift and I went to sand with a couple guys from work we went into most of the bars felt very welcomed didnt pay for a drink whilst I was there!!! Does anyone have the co-ordinates for meob I want to have a look at it on google earth!
Can't help you with the co-ordinates for Meob but I also spent a great evening in Sands with Mike many, many moons ago. A couple of the guys that worked in the shop (then still owned by Namdeb/CDM) had kuku shops there and one of the guys used to take all the old promotion material from the store - he used it as wall paper in his shop!
I thoroughly enjoyed the evening there, it was quite an experience and also never once felt unwelcome.
Last year one of the workers from Spar got married and they held the bachelor party at Sands, inviting Mike, Arthur, Jacques and Riaan - they had a blast and reckon the guys were really chuffed that they made the effort to attend.
Looks to me like an old D4 dozer
Mike, when my dad retired, the GM offered him a small going away gift,3 months or more prospecting at Meob, they did find some very small diamonds but i reckon the old man did more fishing than prospecting laughpoint.
the camp is at 24deg38min50.30s - south
14deg43min15.43s - east
this is the middle of the camp - you can follow the tracks from there to the beach
regards Angus
Gus,
When your good, your realy good.
a emplyee named ??? Pillay ,friend of Kannie worrie Groenewald went with Kannie to Meob. Kannie maintained that anybody who had the same name as his favourite drink must share in the pleasure . Pillay therefore must have a regualar drink . Mr Pellay went to Meob, and returned empty handed , he could not stomack the amount of perle wine . He did not have a line in the water that long weekend .
Pillay's son was called Veantis......they drove a brown citreon/puegot and lived in 2nd ave..
Thanks for the co-ordinates I have found it.
