Title: Baseball diamond...?
Post by: Andrew Darné on March 07, 2010, 08:44:01 PM
"That was on top of the old baseball diamond, begind westgate..for you old timer. the east end of the practise range... it was taken over by SWAPO...ran into the ground...nothing happebed for two years, and now I see they produce cabbages there....."

I recall hearing about the old baseball field from "old timers" but can't find any definite references to it besides Mike's comment above.

Alfred posted a Google Earth image (in Bush telegraph - Google Earth images) showing the area which we believe it to have been located.

Anyone out there remember it???

I remember it being marked out on a sketch map of the town in a book about O'mund given to us describing the why's and wherefore's of life here. I'm sure we still have the booklet but if so, it is in G Bay, So Andy D you'll have to wait for us to get back there.

No problem Mike V... I was sure there was mention of it somewhere in the existence of the town. So whenever you find it is good with me.

There was a baseball field where the "garden" is now but I cannot remember if I ever saw any action there.

Came into town a few times during summer 1973 to play baseball.  It had just started then and was played (I think) at the soccer club.  No real formal comp, just casual pick-up games that were a lot of fun. Not sure what happened later as I left in November 1974.

And he sells the roses for N$10 each.  I bought some last week for a friend and got a few extra because the terrible wind scorched the buds.  Beautiful colors and even some that still smell like a rose!

I believe he also sells rose bushes.

@Malcolm,

You are quite right! My Dad (who was quite a renowned cricket umpire) started "pick-up" baseball games on the soccer field in about 1970/71. My Mom made the bases (more like cushions) on her trusty old sewing machine. Dad passed away in early '72, and a few others tried to keep it going. I distinctly remember Terry Holland being the most fearsome pitcher on the mound (ask him if he remembers). Derrick Moore had played provincial baseball for Transvaal before coming to O'Mund, but I can't remember if he was involved.

Mike,the old baseball field was situated where the school auditorium is today,apparently there was a high fence around and the players and people used to enter the area from the old bakery side,that is where they played baseball in the sixties and later it became the schools rugby field ..... ring any bells...   image04

I played baseball in the early to mid 70's and it was on a field south of the rugby grounds at the time . . . and I thought I was the most fearsome pitcher - Geez.
