Somewhere in there came Mr Borchards....came after Mr Devlin in the 60's sometime.
Mmm the Mr Devlin had the longest reign ... I recall my father always saying how he always kept his compusure at social gatherings .. would order a scotch and soda at beginning of evening .. and then thereafter tell the barman on threat of death to when he ordered further drinks to just pour a glass of ginger ale ,,, unless of course he asked otherwise ... wise man ...
@Patricia, Funny you should say that, I was thinking along the same lines yesterday..... At least the chief of Anglo is a woman,....
We arrived in the late "60's - Borchards was the man in charge.
Borchards.... what year???\
The '60's.......late 60's...he was the man during my primary school years. Was in class with his son .

Yes closer to the power station, next to the tennis courts same street the block diagonally across the circle looks a bit further due to the wide grass verge down 5th Ave and the narrow gravel back rd of 6th Ave and of course the reservoir on the end of the GM block
Thanks Alfred for the description .. .... I always recall there being a GM and an AGM ...... deputy dawg ........... 16_1_231
I remember the Hartleys well. Does anybody know what happened to Billy?
32 - 6th Avenue. Been the AGM's house as long as I can remember.
On the photo it's on the end of the block that the bakkie has just passed.
Heard that it used to be the GM's house before they built that new pad called 1 - 10th Street. (Sounds a bit like like No10 Downing Street)
So the AGMs house is not on the pic?
We must be looking at 5th Ave. The house most left was the Morrows home in the 70s. I'm sure...
Oh alright then Sandy....so RIGHT you are. Spoke with my mom to-day and she is quite adamant that Mr Borchards was the AGM not the GM. Me thinks I'll just carry on quickdop
Think you right if they where on the corner or where they not the second house?
Georg jnr
Good on you Diana just keep on quickdop the shiraz ... AGM's g house first on the left on the road running from 1st ave up to the powerstation after the circle ... sort of behind the tennis club ... trust me on that one ... had many a good party there when Colin Hartleys parent were on leave ,,, boy if those walls could talk ... 16_1_231
So Sandy you talking about the now AGM house was the GM's house in your days
Excuse me Alfred we not trex-073 you know. The GM had his to-day GM house in our days.
AGM house there opposite the open ground opposite the bendy road in front of the then police station and back of post office. Just a bit further down behind the tennis courts. drinking-41
THe house was on the corner. You could enter the garden from the powerstation side. turning in the next road you could enter leading to the main entrance of the house. Leaving the house in your back you'ld be facing the tennis courts. I think they were hidden by hedges or high trees.
Borchards was GM - I'm very sure of that. Wasn't a Pretorius his AGM?
You're right Uwe, Borchards was the GM, arrived inthat position! And Sandy, Kidger Hartley was also the GM, trying to get the dates....
I SAID Borchards was GM.........its my mom and Sandy that don't agree with me.
Am I drinking myself clever here...... quickdop/
In this pic the fence straight ahead with half brick wall half slatted plank fence is 32-6th, formerly the GM's house, until Rumbles built the house 1-10th Street which you can see the outside wall of, up the street on the right.
More Rumbles, forgive me if I already posted this..... I am getting old ....
Met up with a new bowler at our club on Friday and he worked in O'mund when Borchards was manager, so it looks as if you asre right Diana.
Will find out more from this chap who is by the way called Howard and he worked in the Refrigeration Section
yes1 :emot112_2: sorriso2 drinking-41
Ok minus one for Sandy and Diana's Mom ... now is there not an official list of GM's and AGM's over the years ... that will save us rattling grey cells ... and making ape of ourselves .... equation .... AGE = MEMORY LOSS .... 16_1_231
Yo Diana,
I came across this while researching CDM!
De Beers Mining Company Ltd. was founded on April 28, 1880, by Rhodes and Rudd, with other partners. The company arose once the restrictions on the number of claims individuals could hold were lifted. Barney Bamato, Rhodes's main rival in acquiring dominant control of South African diamond production, meanwhile purchased claims in the center of the Kimberley mine and in 1885 merged with the Kimberley Central Mining Company. Rhodes, however, raised a £l million loan from the London merchant bank N.M. Rothschild & Sons to outbid Bamato in 1887 to acquire the important Compagnie Francaise des Mines de Diamants du Cap claims adjacent to those of Kimberley Central. Rhodes and Bamato drained each other's profits by their rivalry through the mid-1880s. Bamato, however, eventually gave way to Rhodes's vision of a single controlling company and agreed to exchange his shares in the Kimberley Central mine for shares in De Beers.
Perhaps there are a few shares still lying around!
sorriso2 Ah Ha perhaps I'm a very important person......best check on our shares.
Then off to Australia to kick that other "Rudds" butt.

The '60's.......late 60's...he was the man during my primary school years. Was in class with his son .
I recall being at boarding school late 6-0's and coming home between terms with Iona Devlin on the plane thus indicating her dad was still GM in say as late as 1967 perhaps into 1968 too. But hey, ek is oud! And my brain is slightly screwed up due to lack of no sun up here in the northern hemisphere! ;0)
Hi all,
Stan Devlin came up through the De Beers ranks, initially beginning as an underground surveyor and served in a number of mining locations in the former Rhodesia and SA. He took over from GM Lourens in the mid-Fifities and retired in either '65 or '66. He and Norah went to live in Port Alfred where he was mayor for a few years. Stan died from a heart attack in the mid-Seventies.
Regards,
Bob.
