Title: Payday Parking Pastime on 5th!
Post by: Michael Alexander on April 01, 2010, 08:26:11 AM
Well it's that time of the month again here in the Namib Desert, Payday ...boozing and invincibility ....... Last night..... some individual thought he was invincible...and could drive through the circle on 5th avenue.......

Thanks to our roving photographer for the professional images...

Thanks to Oranjemund Spar for donating a trolley to NAMPOL to secure the accident scene...

:emot112_2: Trust Mike to notice his missing trolley...

Do you think we should report this accident to Toyota? With all their recent recalls, I wonder if they'r aware that the model in question obviously has an airbag deployment problem...lol

Then again, no seatbelt = no airbag deployment or so they say. But then how does this explain the lack of a head shaped dent in the driver side windscreen. The plot thickens... or maybe I've been watching too many CSI episodes again.

Is it my imagination or is the SPAR trolley standing on bricks?  Did the car maybe swerve to miss the trolley.... I see a negligence case coming on.

Wonder if the driver knew the next morning which of the two causes for his headache he should blame... the accident, or the dop?

I don't have the exact details, but I believe another local tired his hand at F1 racing down 5th avenue again last night and landed up placing his vehicle through a fence..... A close friend of the individual mentioned to me this afternoon that this was now the 4th time that this particular person had trashed his car.......

In an effort to show that they were still in control of law enforcement in Oranjemund, the local police and traffic chaps decided to setup a roadblock between the bank and the community church to ask drivers on this quiet public holiday to produce their drivers licenses..... Mmmh! Should'nt they have been out last night rather asking people why they were parking their cars on people's fences?

Down 8th Street from Industrial Road towards town, the street with all the bends in it... straight into the garden of the corner house on 4th Ave. Lucky for the BIG tree which he connected, prevented the car from parking inside the garage... through the side wall. The connection with BIG tree mad car do funny acrobatic manouvre ending gently upside down.
From behind the car looks unscathed, all windows intact, windscreen can't be seen though. The front... a little different.

Ok, he parked his car.  Also went to have a look (typical nosy Oranjemunder) and later in the day found out that this guy works for my husband!
I actually saw one or two things at the scene that I would like to share.  Did anybody notice that the front piece (bumper) of this Yaris is filled with ... foamalite!  What do we pay for when we buy a car?
Another observation was the oil on the crossing which could not have come from that car.  The oil was not even absorbed in the tar.  Someone else lost an engine there before the accident and spilled oil all over that roadway. Maybe that assisted the other speeding(?) vehicle to end up parked in the yard.  Nosy as I am I followed an oily trail which disappeared down the bottom of 2nd avenue near the petrol station.  Interesting?

Wise observations Nada, any photo;s ..... Thanks for putting the tale in the correct position Andy! Is this the same house that we discussed somewhere else on the forum, about why that house is there and not a straight road like the rest of the streets in Omund?

And it was a RunX and not a Yaris!!!  Blonde moment there, need to touch up the roots!  No news on the oil spill but we have our ears to the ground.
Title: Re: Payday Parking Pastime on 5th!
Post by: Andrew Darné on May 26, 2010, 08:15:46 PM
Well spotted Nada, I found a gold cooured Polo (older model) parked wher the oil trail makes a U-turn at the end of 2nd Ave, can't say if it is from that car though, definitely not from the RunX though.
Definitely an Oranjemund thing, the nosey part. We could probably do all the detective work for Nampol and solve some of their cases sooner that the authorities themselves...
@Mike, yep that's the house...

woo_hoo  Came to work this morning, and on the main drag opposite Savannah Cafe (The Old Butchery), was a cordoned off area, with a BMW, rammed up against the middle isle, with it's front right wheel ripped off....... chap was apparently boozing and showing off how his car could rail the corners and whack...... so there's our latest crash....

I also believe on thursday, A policer from neighbouring Rosh Pinah, bought a car in Alexander bay and half way between Oranjemund and Rosh Pinah he rolled the car..... No Insurance.......

I have pics of the BMW accident, will post later.....

It's only a matter of time, before a kid gets killed on the roads in this here town of ours.....

@Charles - what's quite ironic is that most of these cars that connect with this type of fixed structure are of the sportier or more luxury types. Now we are not outwardly known as party animals who jump behind the wheel and behave like Schumies when the wine gets too much. Yet if we had to make unwanted aquaintance with the fixed structures our little lower-end-of-the-market vehicles won't leave us wishing we had rather drowned in the wine... En die mense wil vir ONS lag...

We can change the circles all we want, but it won't help.

You'll NEVER hear:
1. I was pissed out of my skull....
2. I was slip-streaming Schummie when....

You'll ALWAYS hear:
I was slowly drive down 5th when this "random" gemsbok, dog, strand wolf or dark thing ran in front of my car. HAD to swerve. Don't like killing animals > I'd rather wrack my expensive car......

My 2 cents.

Looks like a VW Polo in the photo's. Judging by the hefty knock it received to the front right side it's weird that the airbag didn't deploy? There's no head shaped dent in the driver side windscreen so he must have been wearing his seat belt at the time. (No seat belt disables the front airbags in VW Polo's).

Makes me worry a bit as I also drive a Polo. Looks like the airbags are factory set nowadays to random mode...lol
Title: Re: Payday Parking Pastime on 5th!
Post by: Charles Scheepers on May 17, 2012, 07:33:18 AM
It was a side impact. The airbag will only deploy with a front impact. Should the airbag deploy with a side impact it (airbag) will probably kill you.

Airbags is actually a very poorly understood subject. If you take a bakkie and fit a bullbar to it, you are screwing around with the factory test setting. Vehicles get safety tested without all the trimming people put on.
Title: Re: Payday Parking Pastime on 5th!
Post by: Carl Wrbka on May 17, 2012, 08:27:03 AM
Hi Charles,

Your reply makes absolute sense, but I don't think all vehicle manufacturers have got their airbag trigger mechanisms (accelerometers) completely sorted out yet. Front and side impacts seem to still be a "grey" area with VW. One of my colleagues in a VW Golf got side swiped at a robot last week. The impact was perpendicular to the passenger door behind the driver, and yet both front airbags deployed. Another colleague in a Polo went off the road into the veld and got smacked in the face by his airbag after being exposed to this off-road experience.

Airbags myths are plentiful on the internet. Mythbusters recently had an airbag special on Discovery Channel. The myth was that holding your steering wheel in a certain way could result in you losing both your thumbs in an airbag deployment. I believe that myth was busted in the end.

Mmmmh! Rumour bird indicates that there might have been 4 "unofficial" parking pastimes this fine payday weekend in Oranjemund...

1) A tree with three
2) Cement barrier next to infamous speedbump
3) Car Glass scattered on the NW corner of St.George's Square
4) Street Sign bent over near the parking lot at Sportmans!

Not quite payday, a source informs me that a vehicle ploughed through a Stop Street and landed up in the school parking lot, destroying plants and pavements in the process..... this happened two days ago, anyone got something to add?

I also noticed a tonsil driving speeding down 7th avenue towards the Stop street opposite the post office in a long Canter truck belonging to a contracting company...... The guy had to have been doing 70km/hr about 120m from the Stop..... it is only a matter of time before one of these fella's is going to take a life....
