"Potchefstroom - For the first time in this years Spar national netball tournament, Netball South Africa's (NSA) controversial quota system affected the outcome of a women's A-section match on Thursday.
Gauteng Central, who had lost all their previous matches, pulled off a narrow 41-39 win over last year's losing finalists, Boland.
Captain Nthabiseng Moabi was delighted with the victory, but said she was not surprised.
"We knew we had the fitness, the speed and the agility," she said. "We were sure that if we could control the ball from the centre, we would pull it off."
But the jubilation of the all black team turned to disappointment when their opponents were awarded six additional goals for sticking to the required 5/2 quota throughout the match, giving Boland a 45-41 victory.
It was Boland's first win at the tournament so far.
Ironically, Boland were penalised in their match against Dr Kenneth Kaunda (North West South) on Wednesday, when they fielded six white players and one black player for the second half of the match.
However, the six goal penalty did not affect the outcome of the match, as Kaunda won comfortably on court.
NSA introduced the quota system two years ago in an effort to reinforce their transformation programme.
In previous years, non-compliant teams had goals deducted from their total, but this year NSA decided to reward compliant teams by giving them extra goals.
Teams were also awarded points on registration, according to the composition of their squads, with 7/5 being the benchmark. Kaunda and Western Province were the only teams to meet the standard, and were awarded five points each.
Seven teams in the women's A-section received four points each for having a ratio of eight to four, Gauteng West received three points and Boland two.
Gauteng Central received no points. The compliance points could be a deciding factor in determining which teams play in the semi-finals."
Mike .. you beat me to this one ,,, watched it on the news this morning ,,, was gobsmacked ... our current ANC leaders are definitely more obsessed with race than the old "regime " the population register with reference to race was supposedly abolished , but has surfaced in the monster called affirmation , BEE ,, righting the wrongs of the past etc ,, penalties or no contracts to businesses that dont match the scorecard etc ,, now it seems the very rule they play has shot them in the foot on the sport front ,, Huh !! points awarded for meeting the quota ??/ where is ability and sportsmanship ,,?? being slowly strangled by race obsessed beaurocracy ???
When is it going to stop ,, when are the " freeborn" ( those born after 1994 ) going to regarded as equal ?? my guess NEVER ...
Our company had a harrowing time getting the score this year ,, the beurocrat coming back time after time ,, needing more little blocks checked ... our CEO had a shitfit with said beurocrat ,, saying to her look at me I own this company ,, is it not enough ,,, is it not enough that I have a trust benefiting a grouping of black women from the success of this company ??
Makes me think back to the laughable situation when Puke Watson was shoehorned into SA rugby team ,, all because his father was part of the liberation ??? The ANC said that based on his family's suffering for the contribution they made ( hey he was a kid when it happened ) him an honorary black ??? I too was gobsmacked by that .. felt like writing to Hon Pres and asking wheres my honorary blackmanship ,, my Mom was involved in and supported the " liberation " married an ex political prisoner , defied the race laws by doing so ,, my very support of this and breaking every rule of the then Govt ,, all of us likewise risking imprisonment for tacit support ... For my contribution on the workfront , recognizing in the 80's when I took my management position the talent that was overshadowed by excuse my saying so a bunch of useless white but punctual foremen who did not even get disciplined if something went wrong on their shift ,, the workers got disciplined ... I steadily changed that ,,, persuaded the useless that they ahd no place in my scheme of things yada yada ,, not done for points , I did it because I saw a huge injustice and could not support it ,,, SO Dear Pres for all this where are my " points ???? ha ha
On this point I have resolved to whenever asked my race as so frequently appears on official documents will just write ,, South African ...... stuff them !!
