Title: That Tree has got to Go!
Post by: Michael Alexander on August 30, 2010, 08:27:50 PM
It saddens me incredibly to see any tree;s being toppled over in Oranjemund..... It saddens me that in our garden is a massive lump of a tree.....it reaches at least 12m higher than that of the apex of our roof..... it's girth so wide that I cannot wrap my arms around it..... this tree is one of the old timers and must be about 50 years old..... the only problem is, it is leaning to one side, that of the house...... Whoever planted it back in those pioneering days of Oranjemund had no idea it would achieve such lofty heights and perhaps planted it a wee bit close to the actual building.....

I had to contact the powers that be to come and inspect this beast of a boom, I hate the idea of it being destroyed, but I vow to plant three more in it's place.....

Hi Mike,
The old timer deserves a break. What's wrong with pruning it down to a single trunk, half its size. Within a year it will have a growth of foliage and still be giving pleasure.
Note also you've got gutters and downpipes. Since when did Oranjemund houses have such luxury items? And since when did it rain in Oranjemund often enough to warrant them?

The problem is, it is leaning over towards the lounge, as with most tree's in Oranjemund, The roots cannot grow down like a real tap root and tend to spread out...... making them easier to topple, this tree is always dropping acorns and branches on my roof.... and after a strong wind, one finds a lot of branches on the lawn.... I am scared that the tree decides to topple on a day when we are in the lounge and takes a half my lounge out, killing somebody.... and my kids play under that tree.....

most houses have a gutter above the doors only....

Had the tree inspected, turns out it get;s to stay.....   woo_hoo    I have to nail a plank to the side of it, propped up into the ground in order to see if there is any movement of the beast in strong winds.....

Guess the birds will be happy......
