My goodness Gunther still going strong ... I remeber he could at times ahve a nervous temprament .. I remember when I was an appie at Town electric .. he had a huge bell installed in our tea room .. and boy did he stick to the clock .. at the end of tea time he would press the button on his desk and clang us out of the tea room .. Sweet revenge ... The bell was quietly removed when he went out one morning ... and installed under his desk ... next time he pressed the button at the end of tea time the bell rung right under his desk .. nearly giving him a heart attack . everybody had in the meantime moved out of the tea room to witness him jumping up out of his desk in fright and come flying down the stairs screaming blue murder and some unknown german swearwords ... just part of the fun he eventually saw the humour in the prank .. but we got our bell back albeit ringing a bit less persistently ...

I had a smile of what you said about Günter, but disregarding that, he is a very valuable friend of mine and we still have occasional contacts by phone. Günter is now 81 and has slowed down a lot. Helga realy looks after him. I had about 4 visits to them since i have left Oranjemund.
I hope someone will supply me the email adress of Ingo Machts so i can communicate with him

Ja George .. Uncle Gunther ... was very fond of him as he had a good heart and tried to nurture good values in us naughty appies .. once again never forgot him and was so happy to see his picture and to see that he is still with us ...

Hi George I was a appie under Uncle Gunter Machts he was the foreman at mining electrical (gemsbok workshop) 1984? he had a garden and used to grow tamatoes he would let us have it in german if we came arround the gravel road to fast and dusted him and he's garden while he was doing the watering I brought he's bakkie back full of dirt and mud did he give it to me that day after that I used to clean the bakkie at a other workshop before I drove back, it was great working with him
