Title: Bulletin
Post by: Dalene Steenkamp (Coetzee) on October 04, 2007, 09:24:01 PM
Uncle Bill Fry (I still have a picture of him and my late father, Dirk Coetzee - he was the Station Commander of the Police from December 1973 till 1984 in Oranjemund) who used to run the printing shop and was in charge of the Bullitin.  All events, gossip tales, happenings etc. was printed in that "paper". He was my hero when he posted a picture of me winning the Pink Pan Race for children when I was in my std. 4 year at school.  I assume he was the sponsor for the prize money - the huge amount of R20 - I used it to buy myself a rag doll and I still have that doll - 31 years later!

"Kannie Worry" who used to camp on the small patch of grass on the circle in front of the Pub during his annual holiday.  Got to thank him for my love of camping.  His private live provided good reading material to fill up space in the Bullitin during holiday times when there was not much else to report about.

The flood of 1974 - amazing photo's, taken by Hein Nezer who was the "chopper" pilot in Oranjemund, was printed in the Bullitin.

A question for all the rugby fans :  is Percey Montgommery the one and same "Montey" who lived in the house that was situated near the bridge just as u pass the Horse Club?  Heard it through the grapevine but not sure if it's true.

Mike - a statement I have to make:  Adriaan has informed me about the website, but the fact that you so proufoundly declare that you support THE BEST TEAM made me tick the "I agree" button when I registered.  Just shows you that people do read what is important.

Hi Dalene, welcome onboard, hope you are not as strict as your dad....hehehehhe.... My dad once told me a story of your dad..... My dad was doing his normal thing of getting totally pissed in The Sportsmans one afternoon, when he stumbled outside and went to his car, Big Dirk pulled up next to him...."Jock, I do not think you are in a sober condition to drive that car!", " Get in and I will give you a lift home!" , So your dad being who he was, my dad had to climb in the car with big Dirk, turns out your dad was more trashed than my father  was, and  drove all over the road taking my dad home ... who was gonna argue with big Dirk anyhow !   ;D

I believe it is the same Monty that stayed at the Stablemaster's house.... not many people know that claim to fame....we at Spar, (including Adriaan when he's there often debate it.... Kobus and Percy! wow! what a town..." and don't forget Mark Shuttleworth, also an Oranjemunder....   ;)

And yes the Beautiful Cheetahs are the best team in the world..... and if it is not your favourite team, then it must be your second team....

Enjoy the memories!

Mike

It's awesome to know that O'mund produced exceptional people - I thought we all are/were? - but from a general "well-knownness", don't forget Professor Mark Solms a world reknowned Neuroscientist!

Mike, I'm glad to know that your dad was not the only one lined up by my dad (shall we call them the Zig-Zaggers?).  Same happened to me.  Drove my dad's car, at that stage uder age and no drivers licence.  He saw me, pulled me off the road near the power station, made me get into the Police Cruiser with him and took me to the Police Station.  Said he had to do it, 'cause he could'nt make exceptions for his own kids.  I really thought he was gonna charge me, and like you said, who argued with big Dirk?

Delia, I still have a photo of our netball team - I think it was 1976 - including you, Florrie, Henda, Anita, Hannelie, Debra, myself, Mrs Zandhuis and Dr. Venter.

Yes, you are right about Kobus Wiese - he was in my class and our register teacher was Mr. Chris Kogh.  Don't know if I'm right, but was he also not a Springbok rugby player before he came to Oranjemund?

Thnx for the feedback about Monty and all the other famous people.  That just shows you - even the people from Oranjemund are sparkling diamonds!

mmmh! My dad always reckoned that we should buy him a camel, then he could go to the pubs, get pissed , climb on his camel and fall asleep, whilst the camel took him home...  ;D  ---- "Why don't you rather get a horse?", I enquired of him...... "There's a sign at the enterance to town that says No Horses allowed, but nothing about camels", he replied...

wise scotsman...

I was playing on the laundry table , under all the unironed washing, that sunday morning, when Big Dirk and another officer walked past in those gray uniform and caps, and a real live gun on a dark brown leather strap....wow, my dad was a hero.. h ehehehehhe   --- Big Dirk, did'nt look too happy....but like my dad says of Big Dirk, he was the right kinda cop for this town at that time....! true?

Nice to know you lot are so well informed................  pink lady's, the local FBI moves and all that technical stuff.  I'm not going to ask where you water your "giggel gras" patches, but at least I know where to direct the "seekers" too! One of you computer tiffies should now just write a program "Sniffer wall" as an anti-dectection measure for those sniffer computers!
