Remember how in the 70's a lot of fruit tree's were planted all over the town? Well an enteprising lady picked these of her tree here in town and sold them to us at Spar....not bad for a desert town?
Thta's fantastic. Pity I can't ship mine up to you - they drip off my tree and I usually have herbs coming out of my ears! Not the green stuff people!
Back in the 70's/80's, Aunty Marie Redl (Dennis & Lorina Proctor's mom) used to pick and bottle the olives off the olive trees growing along 5th avenue.
Those olive trees produce a mountain of olives these days, in season they drop onto the road, the birds are evrywhere and the road gets stained.... it's incredible the wastage.....
Marie Redl, did'nt she have the hotdog cart?
lived in 2nd ave? opposite our house?
somebody should take up where aunty marie left off......make a fortune. you know something Mike, until my boet told me about 2 years ago about aunty marie bottling those olives, i never knew those were olive trees (him & dennis were/still are best of buds) - aunty marie used to sometimes send them to do the picking. jeez, if i'd known, i'd have done some picking myself - I LOVE olives.....
I'm not sure where Uncle Frans and Aunty Marie lived - 2nd ave rings a faint bell, same with the hotdog cart. Lance (my boet) would be able to tell u more about that one. She worked in the hairdressing salon for many years as well as spending many a weekend at mcdoug's as they had a house there. Lance & Dennis eventually bought the house off them for R16K back in the 80's.
I'll let you know when the picking season begins.... I'll supply the bottles, Cherry , the herbs...all the herbs.. ;) and I reckon the birds will be pissed... :)
hmmmm..."wasted" olives, that should be fun. put me down for 10 bottles ;D
I remeber stealing pomegranates from the tree hanging over "mad Margarets" house in first Ave. I was always terrified she would hear us and catch us.
mmmm, pomegrates haven't had one in years.......
the Annetts had a tree in their gatden, no stealing needed.

Is this not Maria kiessling??????
I worked in the hairdressers in the 70's and when i started Marie was the owner she then sold it to Marina Botha am sure that was her surname her husband was the fire chief
Hiya All. Yes Aunty Marie Redl was the owner of the hairdressers for a couple of years and then at one time her and Aunty Bonnie Viljoen started the hotdog thing. @ Lorena good to see you on the site LOL. I remember the olive trees (Aunty Marie still makes the best bottled olives ever; never ate olives until I tasted Aunty Marie's, and nothing in the shops compares). Also recall picking mushrooms on the golf course. Had to get to the course before the mowers arrived but wow the size of those mushies, one would fit on a slice toast "after" the dude was fried. Had a slight marzipan taste but soooo yummy.

Mike, Julie said she knew her grey matter wasn't letting her down but you are forgiven as it was long before your time.
She keeps promising me that she is going to bed after her glass of red wine, we are now a bottle and a half and she is still sitting here drinking. OMG, now she is going to phone my dad to see what he is up too> idontknow

Love you too my darling, you know what they say???? " You can choose your friends but not your family"

Hey Eugene, one day, as kids my boet and myself were digging through the rubbish that you guys had thrown out ( u only lived 4 houses down from us...) as there was interesting junk in their...one of the things we found was a giant J&B bottle , the blow up one...do you remember this?
My brother also took two small tree's that you guys had thrown out and took them home and planted them at E7-1st ave, I walked past there two weeks ago and both those tree's are taller than the house now....
Growing up as a child at 72-4th Ave we had figs, guava's, lemons and bananas from the garden. My dad also had a very successful veggie patch. Our next door neighbours had an avo tree in their garden but it never bore much fruit.
At my folks house 2-6th Ave they now have an avo tree which bears the nicest avo's. My dad also has a veggie patch there which also produces a lot of veggies - carrots, spring onions, broadbeans, green peppers, tomatoes, etc.
For some strange reason, even though they never grew in Omund, I used to be always fascinated as a kid at the mule derby at the coconut shy.... COconuts in Oranjemund...I never won one of those blerrie things..........
:nono1:
That was the absolute best; winning a coconut from the shy an dthen smashing it on the road to get at the flesh - yummy! My brother Bill alway swon at least one and then we had to pay very steep bribery charges to gt some!
Yesterday I picked my first strawberries of the season from my garden - only three but they were yummy!
