Mmmh! Those were the days, what did you earn for you first pay packet and further more what did you blow the dosh on?
Did you have to pay your folks room and board?
Did you think, Wow! I'm rich?
I have an idea, that my 1st year apprentice salary was about R360.00......
that was in 1989.......
My apprentice first year pay check was R50.00 a month of which I paid R10.00 for single quarters/mess. Cigs and booze was fortunately cheap those days and could still have a good time LOL
I remember paying mess fee's also, for the amount you paid and the food you got in return , it was a bargain, in those days you could eat as mush as you wanted, steaks galore, braaimeat galore...... off course in later years this was changed when certain individuals started to remove the food under their overalls in plastic bags to feed their friends back at the hostel who were not working in Oranjemund,

Gee! The Milk and bread was expensive?
Ya Well.....at least you didn't ask for my bottle store bill. I also thought the bread and milk expensive. That amount was for the coupons we used to put out for delivery. Could be that that amount lasted me longer than a month.
My first pay packet was R440/month in 1983 - blew it all on clothes, music & partying :) In about 1985 i got paid -R10 one month - again blown on clothes, music, music, music......and partying. It dawned on me i was never gonna get overseas at this rate so I cut up my card & told accounts department not to allow me to to charge anything to my payslip. Worked like a bomb 'cos come 1988 i was off touring Europe by banking my monthly salary and living off my steakhouse waitressing wages.

That was a real bargain. I remember certain Sundays they had sole. Summy, Pierre Cloete, Alwyn Huisamen, Andre and Pierre Spies and others used to see how many soles you could put away. It was great food and as you say a Bargain.
