Title: Ossie Newton Thompson
Post by: Michael Alexander on October 28, 2010, 07:04:08 AM
Old Oranjemund Resident, Arthur Conry snr handed me this photograph, it was from his days working up Luderitz for CDM.

The photograph was taken by him and was taken shortly after a plane crashed at the airport just outside Luderitz. It was around the early 70's . The politician , Ossie Newton Thompson, was one of the passengers onboard the ill fated light aircraft.

Arthur recounts the thick mist and that the plane had been trying to take off that morning.....

I have tried to google more on the incident , but came up empty handed, anyone from the old days recall the incident?

All I could find was the date of his death, given as "Died April 3, 1974, nr Luderitz, South-West Africa (aged 53 years 122 days)."

Thanks for the research Bob, that's all the info I could find about the incident, although there was plenty about the man himself....

Well, I am constantly amazed at who reads these old topics, but was pleasantly surprised to receive a email form Hilde Buys.....

"My grandfather Cornelius van den Berg was on the plane and Jooste was the pilot and owner

Hilde Buys"

Putting names to a tale.....great stuff....

I had Arthur snr in the office yesterday, the topic of the plane crash revisited....... Arthur had found the photographs of the crash scene that he had taken all those years ago.

Might be of interest to somebody one day!
