Title: Oranjemund Open on 1st August 2011
Post by: Michael Alexander on July 21, 2011, 03:48:50 PM
I am hearing that the mine security dept will be "withdrawing" from the Sendelingsdrift gate and the Swartkops gate, as the town will be proclaimed and one can just drive into Oranjemund like a normal town,

Goodbye Gemsboks, Goodbye Oranjemund......

Enjoy the ride.......

I wonder which side of town will experience the first informal settlement!

I reckon the west side near the mine fence looks good!

Here are my thoughts as a resident of Oranjemund for almost 40 years....

1)Although painful , the town needs to open to ensure it's future.
2) Property can be owned and sold now.
3) Investment, albeit on a small scale will now occur in Oranjemund.
4) Be able to move in and out of town at 02h00.
5) You get to live in the real world, start to pay your way like everyone else.
6) Oranjemund is still a small platteland town.
7) You will get an informal settlement in Oranjemund, just like all the other towns in Africa. Deal with it.
8) Petty crimes will increase, not a massive carjacking, mass murder scenario that occurs in JHB.
9) Get to see new faces as tourist will start to use Omund as an entry point into Namibia.
10) Our police force has already increased by 120%. I have met some of the new recruits, young , educated and can communicate.
11) No more waiting for 21 days to get clearances....
12) SPAR had a major break in 3 years ago, so the criminals were still able to get into town back then, so I do not see any major argument on the crime wave complaint.
13) You are part of history, you lived here in lock up days and now you get to see the open days.
14) You cannot change things back to how they were.... adapt to it, make the most of it...
15) I am sure that we will still get support from the mine on major issues as they are still the owners of about 97% of all the properties in the town.
16) You are now living in the only town in Namibia that is wholly encompassed by a major National PArk.
17) Namibia has some of the best regulated Conservation laws, if you see a dude shooting that fat inbred bok on your street, phone the police.... make the difference....
18) I was talking to Rosh Pinah residents, in regard to their large informal settlement, yes, there is petty crimes.... but in general nothing major, if you look after your property and use common sense, you will be fine...
19) No matter what happens, the sun will still rise over those two big dunes to the east, the fog will still roll in over night, the Jakkals will still be howling, the beach will still have surf crashing on it...... and you can still enjoy it, you just get to share it with more people.....
20) You are still living in the 2nd least populated place in the world, so enjoy your stars.... and live your life as an Oranjemunder.....

It ain't all bad, you could be somebody else in this world....

While I agree with Mikes 20points and yes hello to our world..... It just won't be good old Oranjemund anymore. The closed town and the uniqueness of O'mund is what has created us lot "and perhaps the success of this site" to still feel as if we are all one family whether we were friends in O'mund or whether we never said one word to the other person while living there. I don't think there is another town where the people are that bonded. Me thinks this is the last generation of that. Perhaps I'm not expressing my self very well but thats my 2 cents worth anyway.   drinking-41

Maybe another supermarket and the jackels will be caught and eaten the gemsbok will disapear
the only thing that will remain the same the sun will rise and set like before

Still not by first choice I would like it to remain closed
