Title: Rain in the desert town..... 23 August 2011
Post by: Michael Alexander on August 23, 2011, 10:18:56 AM
Well it happened again, the rain arrived during the night.... I remember reading old newsletters from the late 70;s, where under the Weather block, it was reported that the average rainfall for Oranjemund was peaking at about 21.7 mm , well according to the NAMWEATHER site down at the airport, the rainfall for this year so far is standing at a staggering, 107.3 mm

Wow! ... anyhoo (canadian for anyhow), I drove around town taking a few snaps.... I realise that these pics with these little puddles don't mean much to the folk in the real world, but if you lived in the desert, you would appreciate the impact of the rains...

I actualy remember there always being the hugh puddles "behind the Spar" and "the Mess photo" back in the day when it rained a lot. Drainage hasn't changed much I see.

Thanks for a wonderfull set of photos. Years mago [ may be late 70's ] we had more than 20 mm early morning till about 10h00. Me and assistant Festus were near the 4 plant haul road , The road being so slippery and wet that the Cat trucks could not deliver ground to the plant. And guess what was on the road ?  .. spraying water . Yes the water tanker. Upon my question about him making the messy road worse by spraying water , the driver told me that his paper tells him to spray water on this road on that specific day. And besides , because I know nothing about roads , he would like to tell me that this water is different from ordinary water. It is salt sea water that hardens the surface and if he does not do his job the road will become full of potholes and he will be blamed for not doing his job ... and off he went slip sliding away .
