Dr von Braun was a member of the German Waffen-SS from 1937 and an officer of the Waffen-SS from 1942 until the end of the war.
His experimentation and improvement of rocket science led him to producing armaments of extreme destructive power. The V2 rocket being the first inter-continental ballistic missile and used to bomb London during the latter part of the war.
He surrendered to the American forces primarily due to fear of bad treatment as a prison-of-war at the hands of the Russian captors.
Luckily he did because his work has led to advances in space exploration and will soon see man land on Mars.
