Strong field contest Federation Pairs
The Oranjemund Private School team that won bronze at the interschool badminton championships in Pretoria.
THE annual Africa interschool badminton championships took place in Pretoria, South Africa recently.
It was the first time in the history of Namibian badminton that a school (Oranjemund Private School) was sent to participate in such a prestigious tournament, representing both school and country.
The players worked hard under their coach Lynn du Preez, who is also the national junior coach. A very high standard of badminton was maintained by the juniors which gave a clear indication that the players worked with dedication to achieve their goals.
Last year, both the Oranjemund boys and girls were the top badminton schools teams in Namibia.
The boys played against Uganda in the semi-finals and narrowly lost before claiming the bronze medal. The girls were even more determined and easily won their semi-final to contest the final against the top school from South Africa. The girls gave it their all and eventually won the finals. They were crowned the Africa schools champions and gold medallists of the tournament.
These results are among the best ever achieved in Namibian badminton history. Organisers are looking forward to a fantastic badminton year where the juniors who mainly come from Oranjemund will defend many of the titles they earned last year.
