Ex Oranjemunder , Malcolm Bertoni has been at it again..... He has written yet another book , this time covering the vast expanse known as the Sperrgebiet. The book is being finalised at the printers and should be available at the end of the month.
I will post the names of the outlets that shall be stocking it once they have received their stocks....
I have it on good authority that this book has a number of stunning photographs, well worth the read...
The book is a hardcover , with 140 pages and 70 photographs and will retail around the R300 mark.
It's a hardcover book with 140 pages and 70 colour photos.
Any chance of and iPad version for pay and download?
I shall leave that one to Malcolm,
Oranjemund Spar will be stocking the book once it is available from the printers....
I Second Mike's comment's - going to be great
A joint selection of over 1000 photo's to select from can't wait to see which one's made the book
Going to be available in Australia?
Ironically, Malcolm lives in Tasmania..... drop him a line....
any news re Malcolms book ?
Hi
The book should be finished printing this week.
Mike is kindly going to collect some in Cape Town and hopefully within a few weeks have them in the store.
I will get some sent to me in australia and so should be able to supply the local mob here.
I'm hoping to get an ebook done, but its a complicated format as there are 75 photos, maps, text boxes and columns that have to be converted to ebook format.
I'll keep everyone posted.
Cheers
Malcolm
Great stuff Malcolm
Can't wait to add this to my collection, hopefully you will autograph my book like the others
Keep well
by the way Lientjie, Sinead and myself, going on a round trip like our last trip I want to book into the Fish River Canyon Roadhouse for one night
Cheers
Alfred
What is the news re Malcolms book ?

thanks , but where can I buy it : exclusive books . CUM . Forgathey ' s or perhaps CNA ???
Hi all
The book is a bit of a saga.
I couldn't get any publisher interested to publish the book so I self-published in Cape Town and paid for all the costs myself. This meant that I did the layout, design, fonts, structure, colours, covers, paper choices, etc, all myself. I also took about 60 of the photos in the book and got contributions from other as acknowledged. I think it has come out rather good and now that I finally have a hard copy here in Aus, I've only spotted a few small spelling errors (so far). Any issues with the book can be laid squarely with me. Having said that I think the printers did a great job.
What this has meant is that I have to do all the distribution and marketing myself. I have the books stored with a friend in CT who is doing the distribution for me.
I have asked Mike to advertise the book on the forum and he has kindly done this for me.
Retailers that are stocking the books are Clarkes Bookshop in Long Street CT, and Afrikana Books in Mill Street CT. Springbok Cafe in Springbok also has stock, and of course Spar in Oranjemund.
Windhoecher Buchhandlung and Demasius Publications in Windhoek will be distributing the book in Windhoek and will have the stock in about 10 days.
The SA Library Association are also going to stock the book.
The recommended retail price is around $N299/R299 which is a pretty good price.
I am also attempting to get an article published in Getaway and and Africa Geographic magazines as away of marketing the book.
If you ask me why I did the book, its probably because I wanted to, which is a good enough reason for me.
I don't have any distribution here in Aus as there is little interest in African books here. I will get some sent over, but in no hurry as the costs are horrendous.
Cheers
Malcolm
thank you for letting us know. I will get a friend in CT [strand ] to buy and post the book to me .
Eventually. It was more than saddling a horse and ride accros the sperrgebiet. But I got my copy. thanks to a friend who stays in Strand .
Thanks Malcolm

Hennie, Great stuff.... send me your postal address, I have a Cd to send to you....
Hi Malcolm,
I'm interested in having a copy of your Spergebiet book but it's pointless ordering anything from SA as most parcels are nicked en route. That's from experience having recently dispatched two copies of my latest book to friends in SA, neither of which arrived (not to mention numerous other items over the years). I had to resort to sending replacements via an SA visitor to Oz who will deliver them personally in SA.
I'd be pleased if you could supply me your book from Oz. Let me know the cost plus P&P. As a bonus I'll send you a copy of my latest book (Colossus Unsung, Google it) published a few months ago. It's the biography of a character who lived an extraordinary life, not everyone's cup of tea in terms of leisure reading but you might find it of interest.
Thanks & regards,
Bob.
Hi Bob
I'm getting a few sent over in the next month or so and I'll send you a copy. Email me your address and I'll organise to send one over. (malcolm.bertoni@gmail.com)
Anyone else in Aus or NZ, please email me and I can get a book to you. You're correct - sending books to or from SA is dicey.
The book is also now in stock at Windhoeker Buchhandlung and Demasius Publications in Windhoek now also have stock and will be supplying all the bookshops in Windhoek and possibly even Walvis and Luderitz. I'm also trying to get more distribution in Cape Town. Clarkes and Afrikana are advertising the book in their latest e-catelogues and also have stock.
Cheers
Malcolm

Malcolm Bertoni re your book: About the islands just of the Spergebiett's coast. a remark on pg 108 "One was even a republic once. " . just a bit more info : while scraping guano on Ichaboe island , a black south easter came up , causing collisions and forcing ships to run for open water . when the gale died down and ships beat their way back to Ichaboe , its under new management . An Irish deserter from the royal navy named Ryan has convinced the marooned guano diggers to elect him president and declared the island a republic . He demanded 45 pounds for use of the landing from each ship. The Brits were hopping mad , and war is declared , aided by liquor , all hell broke loose . men fighting with spades and brooms . The Frigate , Thunderbolt , is called from cape town . order was restored and declared a British possession .
attached two bad quality pictures. a graveyard , surely one of the most desolate in the world , and a Notice board on Ichaboe . [both taken many years ago]
I never knew that.....thanks for tale and pics Hennie.
