These sun bursts are part of a cycle lasting eleven years between quiet/normal activity then the cycle of larger bursts. This storm had more material in it than the size of the earth but dissipation and scattering led to a limited 'hit' on Earth.

The sun is in the latter  stages of its eleven year period of increased and larger activity that will end in a couple of years. This storm reveals the start of the end of season activity build-up that should peak within the next 24 months and then enter the next period of quieter storm activity.
