I am writing a book on the lives and experiences of Oranjemunders, past and present.
This book will include anecdotes, stories, memories, recollections, sketches, adventures and yarns or legends. It will focus mainly on funny, entertaining and interesting incidents.
The scope of the book will include all areas around our town, the mining areas, the Sperrgebiet and all areas in and around Lüderitz. Accounts of camping trips to surrounding areas (such as the Richtersveld, Beauvallon, Brandkaros, Baken and Rosh Pinah are also welcome).
Anyone who would like to make submissions of stories and photos should please do so to:
ursula@oranjemundonline.com
or post to:
P O Box 653, Oranjemund, Namibia, 9000.
Articles and photos will be returned afterwards if preferred.
Credit will be given to each photo or article included in the final version of the book.
Interviews will be done if possible and feasible. Translations can be done for submissions in languages other than English, Afrikaans or German.
This is your chance to tell the world what you remember best of life in this special place
Oranjemund.
Thank you,
Ursula Nieuwoudt
It's about time somebody decided to preserve the tales of the Oranjemund folk, a unique town with unique folk now scattered around the world.... so I urge you all to support this project and send your memories to Ursula.
Please feel free to leave your comments on this board.....
:emot112_2: Great idea Ursula!
This forum is a great starting point for a lot of anecdotes, stories, memories, recollections, sketches, adventures and yarns or legends. You can freely use any of my posted material, I don't have any copyright issues...lol
Good luck with the book.
Hi Carl,
Lovely to meet you. Thanks for the message, will look for and hopefully find (in this absolute maze of info!) your own stories :-)
Ursula

Hi Sandy, thanks so much, much obliged. Swimming amongst the sharks here :-) Immersing myself, going deep sea fishing or should that rather be 'trawling' for information?
Best regards, Ursula

Hi everyone, thanks very much for your helpfulness. I'm getting into things, taking some time to get 're-acquainted' with O'mund and all its history. Was fairly up to par when still working but can apparently no longer access the files in the upstairs department daringly called my brain (smile).
Have a lovely weekend.
Ursula
Ursula is still busy with this project, so come on you auld folk, share those memories, no point in taking them to the grave with you...

Hi thanks Mike,
Update: Went to Windhoek last week, (thank you very much, Riaan), where I was lucky enough to interview some very interesting people. Does anyone remember Uwe Holm, Johann Rokitta or Walter Rusch? The latter, inter alia, wrote a fabulous book: 100 Years Of State Railways In Namibia. Belinda also gave me a lot of contacts who might have lots of stories :-) Wolfie Trossbach was unfortunately unavailable, but will hopefully see him later.
Would love others online to send me some stories. I'm also hoping to get some stories from youngsters who went to school here. This book is not just for stories from the past, but for contemporary ones too. Pseudonyms or just referrals to "J did this" or "P did that" are also fine. Thank you very much in anticipation, and have a lovely day, Ursula
Hi Ursula,
I came on this topic only recently and would like to add my congrats for such a great project. Please feel free to use anything I have posted.
A useful contact with a group of the older generation is Ricky Barron whose mother and her friends have memories of the town going back to the Fifties. Also Gordon Dally of that era.
Hi Mike, any news on Ursula's book?
I guess not!
Sorry Julie, I have been sidetracked of late..... must be the sobriety .....
I know Ursula was away in CPT for a bit , but I see she has returned, I will ask her this week...
Hi, yes, the book will still be coming, the research is taking a bit long. I've been digging so deep I found myself clear over in archaeology! So much information in so many places, and often the facts are different or ahem, shall we say, coloured by time and recollection? And I love the advice I get: "Och rubbish, who on earth would want to read such dusty, dull stuff?" or "You're wasting your time, it's all been done before!" and "Your audience will be super small, I hope you realize you'll never make a blue cent with such a book!". Even if nothing else, it will have been worth the fun. If you have anything you want the world to know or something you wish will not be forgotten, please let me know about it? Thanks a million, and have a lovely day, everyone. Ursula
Ursula , any news on your book?
Me thinks she is still trying to get the dust of some stories... Toilet-Reading
