Heard from a reliable source that our ADSL bandwidth in Oranjemund is about to be doubled up, no extra cost..... This is due to the new deep sea cable recently installed....
I will be moving up from 512 to 1 meg..... Let the good times continue....
????? and get slower? Last 2 weeks been hell......... ill-3d. We will never get what we pay for. Boobs
Since last week Monday my bandwidth speed has dropped be 80%... ThatStinks2
MTN .. now R 139 for 2 gigs ... go wireless...
i feed my mouse barocca calCvita and my speed in up by 30%
I think the current slow speed is due to repair work being done on a cable that was damged on the 29th bear Keetmanshoop..... that's why the ATM's and speedpoints were down, we are running on one ring , not two... should be fixed soon...
My speed dropped on the 23rd.... maybe they only found the problem on the 29th... ?
Gonna phone Windhoek today and see what their story is.
Internet is expensive here and we should get what we paying for... ThatStinks2
Mike can you do the Iway speed test and post.
http://speedtest12.iwayafrica.com//speedtest (http://speedtest12.iwayafrica.com//speedtest)
Here is mine....... how can the upload speed be faster than the down load speed... ?
Not a consistent speed, here are my 3 done in a space of 6 minutes.... Something is afoot...
It will be great if that does happen! It has been very frustrating lately. Not sure how these things work but my test gave me 168kb/s but I know from experience that I have never gotten much more than 20kb/s (and less than that this last week or so) download speed....?
They sending out a Technician to come look at my Internet connection.... will report back. 3_8_14
Just tested our (supposed) 3G connection at work, twice in fact since I thought that there must be an error. If anyone can find slower than this I'll be impressed!
My upload speed is normal, its just my download speed that is 8 times slower than normal... 15 times sometimes... image061
I see there is mention in the Namibian of the 11th of May?

Think we being scammed here..
They reduced the internet speed by 75%.... then doubling it, hoping we will be happy with half of what we had... notfair
Even here in OZ there are some shonky Internet Providers they tell you to read the small print before signing up and their TV adds are very convincing 50GB of down load for a low price..............$50 after you have blotted the sign up contract you find out their true intentions and that is of your 50GB of download only 10 of that is allocated to you in the prime time you use the Internet. The other 40GB of their download is to be used at a time you obvious now know that you will be tuck up in bed unless you enjoy sitting in front of the screen from 2am - till 8am. The ISP company I have been with for the last 10years did not take this into account ramping up their prices and getting less download. The new provider has been forced to change their advertising but that's little comfort to them that swallowed their initial spiel and had to go into a higher price for their package. ThatStinks2
They doubled up my internet today.... did not help.
I can talk very fast now but can't hear much. trex-073

This speed test is a lot of tosh..... I downloaded files this morning and it took forever at 7.1-9kbs.... The test thingy tells me that I have a download speed of 152.7 kbs ...... I will be climbing on the fast electrical telephone to WHK 2morrow to air my views.... after all I am paying for a service that I am not getting....

Don't get confused between the line speed and download speed.
512 kps package should give you download speed of around 50kps and the test(line speed) will show around 350-400kbps because of line losses.
There is something wrong with the whole towns Internet and Telecom do not realize it...... Gert was here Thursday and did not believe me when I told him.
Please give them hell tomorrow... sorriso2

Don't be satisfied till you can download a file at 50 kps or at 100 on a 1meg package.
The speed should stay fairly constant throughout. No big ups and downs.
This is how mine was till last week Monday.. madashell
Had old Gert, the Telecom guy here at Spar today, seem's there is a problem with the link at Chameis... seem's NAMDEB have guys working on it.... the internet speed should be up and running in the 48 hours...
Also heard the doubling of speed will start on the 15th...
woo_hoo
And here I sit complaing about our slack speeds...........!
See below. I tested my speeds at 13:50pm and the results reveal a paltry 5.34 MB/s
This is not what BT speeds should be. There is a digit missing from the result. I will complain!

Wow! I tried that with my broken connection....
Impressive!
Mike A.
Do you remember this??
Yes! That is what I was telling Gert about this morning.... surely that must have some effect?
He was also saying that the cable was also lying on the floor somewhere and the Jackals made a meal of it....
feedme
Have about we all rock up at Telecom and inform them that we are all terminating our accounts. When they pay the "you are still in you X year, and you will be penilized for breaking the contract." card.....we play the not getting what we payed for card.
It seems that I have a flexi connection , Fast around 2 am , but going as low as to about 35kb at peak times - suppose that all the teens are then chatting on facebook or something like that , filling the pipe to capacity ?
Don't forget that cell phones use the same trunk line.....thats why even the the 3G is screwed.......
Thats Africa for you. In Europe people wouldn't put up with this abuse..
I did not know that !? cellphones as well on the same pipe ? ... well FNB 's telkom saw us comming [and that rude accronym has got nothing to do with a bank ]
There is plenty of space on the pipe to Windhoek, there is a technical problem somewhere.
Cell phones and 3G devices get bogged down when there are to many sharing a Cell Tower.
Less people awake at 2am so things work better.
Internet at work seems like it's back to normal....
are-you-there
Nope....
It's still screwed.
Can't stream Internet Radio Station from overseas. Only Namibian stations.
All the smilie's on the forum take a week to download.
No1 madashell ThatStinks2
Can anyone tell me any GOOD news about this horrible internet connection we are having these days.....
Service providers (Telecom>>It's a good thing when you are the only provider, and holding the monoplay.) ain't bothered, they are still making millions without even providing a service.
Think by next week I'm going to terminite my contract.
Enough is enough. ThatStinks2 thumper
This internet has not increased in speed.... in fact it feels slower.....

The Internet is still stuffed image14
If you download a biggish file its a immediately apparent.
500kbps line speed should give you 50kBps download speed.
250....25
380...38
1000....100
1500....150
2000...200
I have a 2000 kbps line now and only get about 30kBps download speed.
Upload speed is normal.... I get what I pay for.....
All worked fine till a month ago....
I got 30kbs last night....

Torrent downloads are working good here....
Downloaded a 1 Gig file in under 30 minutes.
Well that should be sorted out now...
Complained with old Telecom this morning that I was gonna call the MD, ex Oranjemunder, Tate Frans and complain how our internet has been throttled over the last 3 weeks.....
Then Gert from telecom turns up, he is just as frustrated.... makes a few calls, threatens somebody, turns out there was an error on the circuit, they press a button in WHK, reset the circuit and there we go.... Our top speed was 99kbs download at SPAR and I have just seen 181kbs ... it was at 200kbs..
How are you guys faring out there now?
looks like my blind is opening a little faster
Surfing the net and streaming internet radio without buffering... woo_hoo
Mike... you rock
You just gained another karma point....!!
Internet is working better but torrents don't work any more.
Last week it was going at 900kBps...... this week less than 1.......
Normal downloads are faster but still going up and down a bit...
You may have a problem with the site hosting the torrent and the many seeders might also sit on a shitty back-bone......
It's all touch and go these days. People don't care about service anymore. They just want to coin.
Tried other torrents.... none are working.
Can anybody download a torrent.....?......... think they been blocked...
Sorry Mike S. Can't help you now. Busy cleaning aquarium. Will try tomorrow.

Streaming media buffering every 10 sec... ThatStinks2
My torrents were working at 181kb/s this afternoon, what I have noticed is they are throttling them sometimes during the working day!
I see slug speed is back this morning...... ThatStinks2

.
I see the poor internet speed is back. Anyone else have to same problem??? ThatStinks2
Can anyone view a youtube movie without it buffering....
Could do it 2 months ago but after they connected the new internet cable and increased our speeds things are much worse. ThatStinks2
My utorrent is running at 39kb/s //// not complaining....
Yes Mike A. Thats all thats working fine. Have you tried streaming internet radio or watch something on YouTube? Web sites that worked fine 2 monthes ago, now takes weeks to open. All local content (in Namibia) is fast. But all international content is as fast as snail mail.....
ThatStinks2 BoomSmilie_anim image031
The reason torrents seem fast is because you have a lot of parallel streams, anything relying on a single high stream feed are very slow.
I get 220kBps torrent speed..... I'm definitely still complaining...
Very few people are complaining because they don't expect/know anything better.... they getting screwed and enjoying it. sorriso2
Looks like the Internet is fixed at last, getting full download speed Now.
After Charles rearranged the furniture at the Teleshop on Monday they got the message that we were not happy. sorriso2
Apparently there was some software glitch at the Karasberg exchange.

Telecom upgraded our Internet hardware last night after much shouting and threatening by Charles Scheepers.
They hope they never see him again... sorriso2
It seems to working well so far, I can actually watch a youtube movie with out it buffering.
Downloads are coming down at full speed and speed is steady also.
Thanks Charles...... daman
Don't THANK me, Pay me in beers!!! BierSuip
Give that man a Bells!

I'll wait till midweek to see if it' continues to work as it should!
Telecom had to fly in technicians from Windhoek to get him off their backs... 3_8_14
Hi all. Just received a text from Orange / T mobile. (My service providers).
They are telling me that as from the end of this month I will be able to receive "up to" .....
;;;; Wair for it............ A whopping 58.5 Mbps. Yup thats Mega bps.
Currently I am receiving about 10 Mbps. The interesting thing will be the cost difference.
They ommitted (I wonder why?) the cost in the text.. mmmmmm..Watch this space.
ape
Sounds like a 4G connection, does your phone support it.
" Up to " is definitely the key word there...
Yup, you are right Mike. Its the new 4G. A little confused though as I am being told that my phone will support it. (Samsung galaxy S3). Yet all the websites I go onto are telling me that I need to upgrade to a Galaxy S3 LTE.
Also having a poke around on the net I am not sure that it will be that much faster as on occasion the 3G loaded a tad faster than the 4G.
As usual me thinks its down to where you are at the time and what areas are supported by the new 4G.
All hype as usual. Will wait a few months and see what transpires and of course what costs are involved.
the Internet' report for Q3 2010 has just been released, revealing interesting statistics about the net around the world. For any geek, the results for Australia are a slightly depressing read.
The fastest average connection speed for any suburb in Australia was 5.8Mbps in Riverwood, NSW. Having spent a year of my life living in Riverwood, I can honestly say this is a surprise. But the 5.8Mbps – while fast compared to third world countries – doesn't even come close to cracking the top 100 cities speeds around the world. As a means of comparison, 29 cities in South Korea and Japan manage to get an average speed of greater than 10Mbps, while Constanta in Romania was the top placed non-Asian country in at number 48. Overall, Australia only managed to gain less than a percent overall in the average download speed during the quarter, which is hardly an encouraging figure.
But the scariest part is the overall figures. Put on some sombre music, because these figures may be distressing.
Average connection speed: 2.9Mbps This is about what we receive
Peak connection speed: 12 Mbps
Percentage above 5Mbps: 12%
Percentage above 2Mbps: 51%
Percentage below 256Kbps: 4%
Now, these figures only include people who connected to the Akamai network, so like any statistic it's not going to be 100% accurate. But it is an indication of just how woeful our internet infrastructure currently is – we currently rank in at number 48 in the world for average download speeds. That puts us behind New Zealand who come in at 41.
It will be interesting to see if the NBN rollout over Q4 last year makes any impact when the next report is released in a few months time.......................(http://www.oranjemundonline.com/Forum/Smileys/Morty%27s%20Set/image04.gif)
