This will take a while and I shall no doubt be shot from all sides, but it needs to be stated....
1) Old Oranjemunder , pensioner and sub Teacher at OPS, Pete Muller, was taken by ambulance this morning to Windhoek, suffering Chest pains..... Anyone that knows Pete and resides in WHK, email me for his cell number...
2) Old Oranjemunder, Tuys De Wet, was brought of MA1 this afternoon with a broken leg. I believe he has to be flown out tomorrow to have the leg "fixed" Tuys is currently working on the Aqua project.
We wish both of these characters and forum members a speedy recovery and return ...
NOW, my point is this, Our hospital use to be a top notch institution.... we had patients coming from the DeBeers boats, Rosh Pinah and the South African mines across the river.... The mine realised that with such a large workforce, they needed to provide this service. One cannot help but wonder since the recession , that the hospital is a mere shadow of it's former glory.... the mine no longer deem's the hospital to be an integral part of their "core" operations.... I beg to differ..... You need to have three doctors to operate the theatre..... this was explained to me last week.... (1) To be the anaesthetist, (2) Perform the op and (3) to assist..... What happens when one doc is on leave or unavailable? What happens if the mine has an accident and more than two people are critical? Flying them out is not the immediate option, afterall we all know about the "golden " Hour.......
On enquiring why no new doctors wanted to come and ply their trade here, a person mentioned to me that the operating theatre in Omund was no longer properly equipped, something about the air conditioning unit was not up to standard and a replacement costs too much....
Now one cannot fault the mine, the town is changing hands..... but surely somebody up "there" can see, like the school, the hospital is indeed an integral part/requirement of both the mine and the town....
We should not have to wait till a bus overturns and people that could have been saved, were not , due to the lack of facilities/staff that should have been in place were not....
We should strive to higher standards.... not demoralize ourselves and sink to a new depth....
I had a staff member head to the hospital last week with an injury from work, he needed stitches to his head.... standing in front of the nurses, pressing a blood soaked cloth to his head, they debated about who was going to assist.... thankfully the older of the trio took the bull by the horn and helped him....
I am still amazed how we have professional people trying to "hawk" a certain brand of products onto unknowing patients to make a quick buck.....
Anyhow, that;s my gripe.... "we" fixed the school , perhaps we can return the hospital back to the levels to which we can all be proud of..........
For what it's worth, after 40 years of passing through the hospital, I still am afforded a good service, there are still a number of staff in this institution who are still delivering a top service....
Just my 2 cents.....

Where do you want the bullet Mike.? BoomSmilie_anim :culo1:
Shaking my head in disbelief.....
Just finished talking to a resident of our town, she had to go for an injection at our hospital, the nurse prepared the syringe , about to inject, her cell rings, tucks the phone under her chin and starts a conversation, syringe in one hand, indicating to the lady to bend, she is about to inject.... needless to say, the patient refused to be injected whilst until the nurse had finished her "important" conversation.....
where have the ethics gone too.....
on my account ,i will give her a nice fat clap if she tried it with me.... thumper what a disgrace 23_146_26
When I was in the Roman Catholic hospital in WHK, a nurse explained to me that all staff were not permitted to carry their cellphones with them, they could only use them at lunchtime....
Hi Mike
I would urge all patients having complaints like mentioned above, to make an appointment with the Hospital Manager, Oscar Simbwae or a member of the Hospital Management team. Nobody can take action if they are not informed.
On the Theatre - a brand new aircondtioner was recently installed to replace the old one.
Hi Nada, great that somebody from the hospital reads the forum and takes the time to reply.
I will forward your suggestion on to the unhappy patient... one wonders if the general public are aware that Oscar's door is always open for valid queries or suggestions.....?
Nice to hear about the air con in the theatre, something positive.....
As stated earlier, on a personal level, I have always had the best service from this institution.... but I continue to worry when we have major accident involving more than one or two patients...
Nice to see another doctor returning last week.... a step in the right direction.....
allgood
Waiting for the big one to happen,
Just heard that last night at rugby practice, that one of the youngsters , Andries, dislocated his shoulder and was rushed to the hospital, turns out there is only one doctor in town and they need two to relocate the shoulder.... one needs to do the anesthetic and the other the work.... It's almost lunchtime and I hear the kid is still lying down waiting.....
are-you-there
I believe Pete Muller discharged himself from the zoo known as Katatura State Hospital, they had no running water for 2 days, the food was utter trash and the place filthy.....
It may not seem important whilst you are young, but a medical aid is a priority in life.....
Pete is looking for a lift home, reckons he will take his chances with his heart in Omund.....
How pathetic is this?
Just heard from a reliable source, that after waiting for 17hours in our once proud hospital, the young rugby player with the dislocated shoulder had had enough...... organised himself a lift and took his dislocated shoulder to our neighbouring town of Rosh Pinah and had his shoulder put back in place.....
just when we thought the town was moving forward......
:nono1:
Had to make a turn down at the local hospital today, to my amazement, I found the outpatients overflowing with sickly folk, for a brief moment , I thought that the outpatients dept had been revived, on further enquiring from a person in the local medical trade, it seem's we have two young NAMIBIAN locums, plying their trade at the hospital... "wow, we have 5 doctors now?", nope, afraid not, turns out two of our normal doctors are on leave, so we have locums...... but these guys are'nt pushing AMWAY products onto their unsuspecting victims.... they are reviewing patient history and making a few changes..... all I heard, was compliments about these youngsters...... One of the locums, happens to be Dr.Ruth's daughter, she was asked by a patient if there was any chance that she would consider coming back to Oranjemund to carry on delivering her professional service..... she replied that she would like to, but has further studies to complete....
Also rumours doing the rounds, of a qualified surgeon wanting to relocate to Oranjemund, his wife being an anaesthetist...... hope this rumour turns out to be true.... would indeed be a coup for the community...
Hi Mike
Correction, not Dr Ruth's daughter, this pretty lady's surname is Hamunyela. She did grow up in our little town and wants to become a surgeon.
Thanks for that Nada, I heard someone mention that she grew up here..... guess she had a good grounding and that what makes her an excellent Doc......
