Words or expressions used when we were kids or expressions used (that we still remember, but do not use anymore or that has just been forgotten) i.e:
Gawker / Gawking - sort of similar to staring = blank minded? (Help if I'm wrong) :buffo1:
We're going for a goof --- swim :36_1_69[1]:
"chips" - as a warning for figure of authority approaching.
I have a lot of expressions nobody understands but it be that I talk South african in the UK ?
thanks to Bev for reminding me of "yonks"
My mom used to freak out when we would say, "did you see how he pulled into her!" - meaning , did you see how he kissed her,
:culo1:
"Chips".....I haven't heard that in years.
"Maak a loss" - probably spelt wrong but who cares - was from my days in Hillbrow.
All those so called hippies begging for money at Highpoint.
Not that I know what it means..... but heres another one I remember from Highschool days....
" Kap n button Broer!"
:Weed_Spin_2:
Heheheh, always knew I'd get to use that emoticon
:emot19:
Quit being "stroppy". Meaning don't be cheaky.
Georg Jnr, you just brought back a memory...my mom would always use the term, don't get stroppy with me.....
:sorriso2:
Or, don't get "cocky". Know that one Mike.

I wonder how many people have a similiar story about the cookies left out at social gatherings.
Rondebosch in the 80's - great....what with conscription and witdokke and riot police ........
the kitchen was the best place to be at parties.
Remember how people used to disappear in the middle of the night..... sometimes to never be heard of again.

I'm going like a boeing
It's lekker like a crecker (SA accent for cracker)
So low like the snow
There must have been many more...LOL
I sometimes refer to a person as a Tosser, its not a word that's used that much here, but when we have had overseas visitors (UK) they have frowned on me saying that this is a bad word over there.................. image04
I remember "cox it for a roll and doughnut" meaning let it go. 1960???
Mmm actually was going to do moment of truth .. nah ... ingested lots of crazy stuff ,, no damage .. always remebered my Moms threat .. ' I'm gonna knock 10 colours of shit out of you " despite my misadventures always remebered her voice and the basic values she instilled ..
I will recall the time she found dope in my high school blazer pocket .. she immediately phoned PPJ Kruger .. told him to lock me up till I revealed the peddler .. took lots of explaining to tell her these folk weere just there on the street in CT ... nearly saw the 10 colours .. promised to behave and promtly went off to misbehave again .. that was the joy of being a teenager ..
Ha.... mom's words....
"There's plenty of water in the tap" ..... reply to the times we winged that we are thirsty..
" Do you think I'm made of money?" ... reply to the times we asked for money....
" Do you think there's money growing on the tree in the backgarden?" ... same as above....

Here's one my Mum would say ...................'I will come over there and wipe that smile off your face!! my lad' image031.......... image04
I remember that one to well Frank. image201
Not a very well known one to everyone, but it was an expression used in Namaqualand in Springbok (those who went to school there might remember it) - I heard someone using it again the other day and had to laugh, because it has been so many years since I heard it : sorry folks, I have to write it in Afrikaans, else it loses the meaning, but I will explain ~
Dis nou vir jou 'n be-gaailike ding
or
Jy's nou be-gaailik
the word be-gaailik is not even in any dictionary, but the meaning of it is 'stupid' or 'simple' .... only the uniqueness of the Namaqualand type of Afrikaans that can create a word like that !
