Brilliant! Like Duval's helicopters in Apocalypse Now witht he speakers blasting Mozart while napalming Vietnamese vilages.
Beds are burning is an excellent track.
BlackDespair Penitentiary for maladjusted boys.
Go team!!

Class of 95...
Y'see only us real okes go to the premier quality school!
Wynberg Girls High - class of '82. Hated every minute of being locked up in hostel (hence lotsa bunking out), but with hindsight now I can say I had some good times.
Back in my day when WBH was still at its original location, we boarders used to saunter down to the cricket nets in the evenings before prep and sometimes afterward too. The nets adjoined the Wynberg Girls perimeter. The OM girls used to come over to chat.
I was always ticked off that they had better tuck than me! I tried to trade but my mother's ginger biscuits were not what they wanted.
Cecile Alcock, my cousin Adeana Wright, Barbara Winstanley and a few more OMers were there while I was at Littlewood House. Apologies if I cannot recall all of you.
Horrible brown uniform for the girls. We guys were OK. But the girls uniform was the dregs.
To get a complete Sunday off while obeying the rule of church each week, I used to wake up very early, shower, get dressed in my uniform and go to Springfield Convent for early morning mass. Alexis Cruickshank and her sister were Springfield boarders.
Doing Mass so early left me the entire day to do what I wanted. Colin and Terry Earley used to go to the Mass at Springfield too. I enjoyed the Catholic Mass better than the CoE/Anglican one.
Better wine! ;D
Rhenish Girls for me. Its not pink anymore!! Its light yellow. Such a shame. Pink is such a good girly colour.

The terrible ......Good Hope Seminary
I went to Good Hope Seminary too - early 1970's! We used to call it Good Hope Cemetery! Complained bitterly about going there - hated being a boarder - but looking back - we had some great times. Was there with my sisters Judy and Angie. Judy and I used to bunk off after school and go down town - then sneak back in before study time (which we hated!) Have sneaked back in by crawling under the matrons window many times! Also hid in a wardrobe once with Judy when we came back from one of our 'outings' - Miss Charlton the headmistress came up to the room looking for us - she must have heard us giggling in the wardrobe but she never let on! She just gave us really dirty looks when we went down to supper though. ;) Happy days!
I went to Port Rex Technical High School in East London, what a ball all those babes.
I went to queens college hate it
Hey Paul, I remember coming to Queens to run a cross country, you still had a smoke or 2 before the race... man I was hopeless. I was so slow that the Queens school bus was driving slooowly behind me waiting for me to get a move on so they could pick up the markers on the road, then when I got to the finish, the finish line had been packed away and all the other schools had already left...
I'd love to see anyone else here top that for the 'hopeless at sport' award
i enjoyed the sport as it got me away from school and on good times i saw my family u guys my friends from oranjemund
but for the rest i hated it
Paul Hall, riding around in the back of a police van may be considered a sport in Holland, but not in the Eastern Cape...
Hahahahha :D
WYNBERG BOYS HIGH 77 THE BEST FIVE YEARS OF MY SCHOOL CARREER WAS IN STD 6
SACS, '86-'90. Wasn't that bad, just the Newlands rain kept your socks wet.
Don't worry Paul, I got sacked from U15D rugby for tackling one of my own team in a match against Bishops, and still adamant that I hadn't. Damn... that was blind... too many witnesses.
The Holy Cross Convent (Windhoek) for Std 6 & 7 and then Wynberg Girls from Std 8 to Matric. Got throught it without to many scars. Lucky for me, we still went by air.
CBC Green point

Hi Mike, I went to Huguenot High in Wellington.
Hi all,
Those boarding school days ....... Ah yes, the company bus would pick you up at your local bus stop closest to your home, and then ferry you off to the airport. There were mixed emotions I recall, as it was goodbye to your loved ones, a little apprehension and adventure all thrown into one. For me personally, it was even more daunting, as I had never experienced flight before. In those days, the company used to charter a Hercules cargo plane. I remember it well. There were no windows, and all the cables and rods that operated the tail and wing flaps were all visible. I used to suffer severe sinus headaches when coming into land. All in all though, it was great fun, especially the trips back home. Wouldn't trade these memories in for the world. The plane was later upgraded to a Convair.
For the record, I went to SACS. It was great to have fellow O/munders in boarding school with you, as you all stuck together like a large family. Some of these guys were Leigh McBride, Gary Ebstein, Mel Ebstein, Steven Hucker, Steven Hodgson, Tony Vogel, John Vogel, to name a few. Some great memories were forged during these boarding school days, and I guess these are the occasions that have made us into who we are today.
Wynberg Boys High
Hey Goofy, the five years in Std 6 didn't help much, you still can't spell 'career'. ;D
For all of us that went to school in the eastern cape you guys have to admit even though we never got to leave like all the rest on long weekends ..... We had the best trips home . Skyways bar in cape town airport
Only problem with Skyways bar, is that a lot of you EP boys did'nt hear your boarding calls and missed your connectiong flight to East London... HEy PAul?
::)
All part of the plan., my buddies were supposed to miss the flight with me but I guess I was the only one with the balls in the end... at least I got to see that your hostel didn't have a jacuzzi nor escalators
You never went down to the basement....
8)
You have to understand it is really noisy in the skyways bar and it could easily happen to anyone... Although somehow it did only happen to one person..... mmmm.... ?
Look people, it was an honest mistake (sort of) if you all can remember how turbulent the charter flight into Cape Town was that day, we seemed to fly out over the ocean for an hour to avoid that storm!!! Anyhoo I had already geared myself up with the exitement that we might miss our conecting flights, and when the air hostess took all our details as well, we were set for a night in CT. Imagine the dissapointment when we found out the SAA connecting flight had also been delayed... so just went along with the original strategy...
Man I still remember when I phoned my dad... about 30 mins after the plane to East London had just taken off... all I could hear in the background was my mom saying: "What do you mean its Paul, when did they put telephones on the planes!!!!! He did what !!!!" thank god I was flying away from home and not back ...
wynberg girls high, but in the family we spred out starting with rhenish for Margaret, Rustenberg for Sheila and then Liz and I went to Wynberg.
Cousin Pamela Margaret went to St Cyprians, her sisters to Good Hope
Rhenish Girls' High from 1967 - 1971 ::)
Good Hope High School for Girls, boy what a grave yard hey....
It seems nobody in here went to SPringbok..... ??? , When I failed Std 9 due to all the thinners i had sniffed that year, my father first threatened to pull me out of school and send me to the border! Yawn! that did'nt scare me, then he clicked and threatened to send me to Springbok, hell I jumped into action and begged for mercy, pls give me one more chance, pls Dad!.... and thats how come I went back to CBC and passed the 2nd time around.....
;D
I know some guys who went to Springbok and I know some guys who went to the border. You were right to be frightened! They would have loved a pretty, english-speaking lad like you at Springbok...
*shiver*
Careful Warren, Shola might read this and "frow you wiff a stone"
Warren, when you say pretty....do you meant that I look good or what...
hehehehehe ;)
Remember, we dated a bit in 1970 but aren't really speaking now. It's complicated.
Anyway, to some of those buggers, a guy like you would definitely be classified as pretty... :D
You more than likely finished that bottle of whiskey of mine... and now everyone looks "pretty" to you...... :o
Hello all,

The one and only ... Rustenburg Girls High ...! Felt like I was in prison for 5 years thanks to the bars on my cubicle window. >:( Went back to visit the place since and it's almost homely now.
We (my sister Debbie and myself) went to la Rochelle Girls High School unfortunetly only for one year then the last 4 years of our high school career was in Eric Louw High School (yes it was as bad as what it sounds)
Lindie Meyer (Ray)
Where on earth is Eric Louw High School? Steinkopf?
;)
Wrong, Mike! I went to Springbok - and got called Soutie just because I could introduce myself in some understandable manner in English. Never got to fly, but we did have some good times travelling in the krok-trokke of Aggenbag's Busdienste. A lot of the Alexanderbay kids also went to Springbok and I cannot mention the nicknames on this site that was given to some of them - .......... Was'nt as bad as you might think it was - we actually were able to obtain matric certificates as well. A few characters also emerged from there: a guy called Kobus Ali later starred in one of those old black and white photo story books - (the likes of Ruiter in Swart en Grensvegter). Zak van Niekerk - the Afrikaans boytjie who makes a lot of money with his bekfluit and typical Afrikaans songs - he's also a product of Springbok. Mariaan van Rooyen, as well as her sister Susan also attended Namaqualand High and so did Amor Aggenbach (the daughter of Freddie and Wilma Aggenbach).
I don't think we old Springbokkers turned out to shabby!?
For my sins I was at Rustenburg Girls High 82 - 86. I am surprised to see only 1 other Rustybug - Patricia. There were 16 of us there when I was in Std 6.
Hi Brenda, was'nt Janet with you at Rustenburg? SHe's also registered on the site.... glad to see you here...
Mike
:D
Thanks Mike. Great site. Yes. Janet was with me at Rustenburg - we still keep in contact.
Brenda, do you remember how often the 3 of us would go and play squash, more of a reason to spend the afternoon chatting, I enjoyed hanging with you two, kinda like my two older sisters that I never had... :D
Ag shame!! I'll be your sister, then I'll have a reason to slap you around. haha
Paula
;D
As long as I don't have to wear your dresses! ;D
Mike, I do remember - any excuse for a chat and to catch up on the goss!! We did have good intentions though...we took our squash racquets with us!!!
;D I always wondered what those wooden things were for!
Patricia and Brenda, you are not alone....... I matriculated at Rustenburg Girls High 1978 - 81. If my memory serves me correctly there were no burglar bars on the cubicle windows when I arrived in 78, we had shutters. I do believe the escapades of a certain young lady in the middle of the night, involving sheets tied together brought a demise to our "freedom". What I remember most about Rustenburg was; Mrs Gracie, cheese with peanut butter and syrup, the std 9's common room and getting chickenpox while everyone else had the mumps! :D
Hi Mike
Eric Louw High School is found in a small town called Musina which is almost on the door step of Zimbabwe.
Mike you don't have to wear my dresses for me to be your sister but can I wear some of yours hahaha you do know that sisters always share their clothes. hahaha
Paula
:o
Hey Sandy,
The bars were on the windows close to drain pipes. For some reason I always got those cubicles. Even ended up prefect of D-dorm, in a cubicle with bars for the whole year. They must have thought I'd be the one to use my sheets to get out ...! Remember the midnite feasts? Salt & Vinegar chips dipped in cottage cheese. And that awful bell they rang to wake us up in the morning. Pure torture!
Hi Patricia,
What years where you at Rustenburg? I feel your pain, did a prefect stint in D Dorm myself - depressing to say the least. I think they were more concerned about boys getting in, rather than us getting out - until that fateful day of course. Oh boy, the midnite feasts.....what we didn't do for entertainment, and raiding the kitchen? Do you remember doing homework after "lights out" with a cloth of some kind over your cubicle light - I'm amazed that one of us never set the place on fire.
Now ladies and gentelmen - knowing what we all know and what we all got up too..................The question now is ----what boarding school are you going to send your little darlings too?????????
Over my dead body Claire.!!!.... :D Just kidding, Boarding School builds character and if I'd had to I would have sent my children in a heart beat.
So True - what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Kids today expect so much and take so much for granted. too scared to put mine in boarding school ( not that we need to where we live) Because if they did the half of what i did, I would f***ing kill them hehehehe
You can add another Rusty Bug to your collection - I was there from 1983-1987...boarder in Standard 6, daybug thereafter. Patricia, what about the marie biscuits and condensed milk during the mid-night feasts...
Centaurus. Looks like I'm the only one. Oops, sorry Diana.
I did them all Carl...started out at Springfield Convent then on to Holy Cross Convent, finally ended up at Centaurus
See guys I told you. Now we are two.
Hi all
Rather a miserable topic! I went to St Cyprians with Margaret Fry & Mandy Rapley. Also Jennifer & Jane Fletcher (anyone remember them?). There were also one or two ex O'munders and some Kleinzee girls. I spent the 1st 6 months bawling my eyes out - even got kicked out of chapel! The two Centruarians - who was the headmaster in your time?
Stephanie Carr
Errrrrr Ummmm Stephanie, for the life of me I don't remember. He was about 5'7'", thinnish, bald patch on the crown of his head and sort of freckley. Cherry help me here, by the there's three of us. Was his name Brand maybe? idontknow
I know the boys hostel master was Mr Grobbelaar and the girls Mr Genis. Oh, Cherry and I can tell you story's.....about drains, behind the stage, ending up in Mariental......(it wasn't me Sir it wasn't me) and things.
Ahhh and here we we are to-day, two well established women. discodance
Wow, 2 new members ... welcome to Jean and Stephanie ... both from my generation.
Stephanie, I remember a birthday party at your place. Must have been in '78 or '79 (before we all buggered off to boarding school). Your mom had organised a fondue and everytime the piece of meat came off your fork and fell into the pot, you got to kiss a guy or girl around the table ... by the end of the evening, there was more meat cooking in the pot than in our bellies ...
Was this the beginning of.... Sorry! Wrong topic.
What do you mean the beginning of ... Do you think we waited that long to begin ... laughpoint
@Stephanie - The headmaster in my time was Mr. Crossman. He took over the reins at the boys hostel as well after the previous hostel master, Kallie Fourie, got fired for indecent activities.
indecent activities.????
@Jnr....Ha ! I knew that would catch your attention....either you or CHris.... laughpoint
Eeh... ehm! I only wanted the translation Mike. What's it mean? :buffo9:

See you are still as pretty as ever. I know I have blanked out large portions of my childhood, but honestly don't remember the fondue party - the kissing must have been terrible! I do however have fond memories of spin the bottle!

Activities that adults should not participate in with under aged boys.
Queenstown Girls High....yes weidemanns' i do remember the trips, i was usually picked up at about 5am by a bus load of QC boys!! :)
I confess that I went to a number of schools - thrown out of Wynberg; almost thrown out of Wellington (Huguenot) and landed up at Centaurus!
@Diana, can't remember the headmaster's name but vaguely remember his "pendulum talk" everytime I was in the crap! Remember the funny Afrikaans teacher - the short fat one who reeked of alcohol, cigarettes and mints - yech!
Oh yes I remember, but not the name, then there was "Blou'is",and that hunky teacher Mr.Jordaan. Much like me Cherry.....we got around.
Remember these faces Cherry,I have a photo of you and I in the hockey team, but like hell can find it now. Will eventually.
what youmean something indecent gonna catch my attention.you kinky thing you?
i was at marist brothers rondebosch.... myself dennis procter, wayne wilson, owen de jager, mike spires ,greg spires, anthony gillespie, charlie huntley, graeme roberts............ cant think of any others......... remember principal brother not liking omund kids much, he forgot our parents were buying his bloody booze and ciggies and food with our privelidge of being educated at a private school and paying more for it. he always referred to omund guys as"COME HERE ORANJEMUND and then your name!!!! oh well we still benefitted in the end.
yes Cherry me and you not welcomed back in the same year at hugenote hoerskool .. I think between you me and Robin Mr Coetzee had enough of O'mund kids but was pressurised to keep on taking O'mund kids .. my best pleasure after getting out of army and buying my first car ( the big blue citroen ) was pitching up ther and standing in the front quad .. he saw me walked past me and I'm sure i heard him growl at me .. so i just growled back .. grrrr .. anal idiot that eh was ..
@ Sandy & Diana :sorriso2:
I sometimes think I've been very blessed to have my kids who weren't half as much bloody trouble but also I knew all the tricks having been a little sh*t in my day so they couldn't get away with too much!
I think the rot set in for me in my boarding school days with that ghastly woman, Ms Urie at Wynberg - it was a case of hate at first sight for the two of us. She made my life miserable from day one and to be fair, I reciprocated!
Good thing I'm such a pillar of the community now ....... not! :emot19:

i thought he was refering to dress being his ........hahaha :emot19:
Blue?? Where do you see a blue dress???? :nono1: Open your window, look at the fields, thats green. Now look up, thats blue. laughpoint
Well if that isn't just a typical answer from a male - one shade of green and one shade of blue....hah! don't you guys know anything..........there are hundreds of shades of blue - from baby blue to kingfisher........Come on Carl - even you have to agree the dress is more blue than green............or maybe you'd like to tell us what colour the dress is??? :culo1:
As green as the fields of Ireland...lol. Maybe closer to Turquoise.
For all of you colourblind people:
blue
green
teal
lime green

Sorry Robert..going off Wynberg now but you just podded my memory, Carl, Cherry and I were trying to remember the Head Masters name at Centaurus during Cherry and my time (earlier in this topic).........His name was Mr. Blackbeard.

And I thought I had Alzheimers? The principal's name was Ivan Baard. He left and Mr West was acting principal until they appointed Clive Roos who was a Rondebosch Old Boy. Carel Fourie was the hockey coach who was jailed for molesting a boy in the hostel. When he was released from jail, he was teaching at a coloured school in Mariental. Not sure where he is now. I loved him to bits and was so upset to hear what he did. There were rumours that he was gay but I never believed them at the time.
Well done Florrie - that's him - Ivan Baard. He of the pendulum lecture!
Yip there we go Mr Baard..........Baard.......Blackbeard....theres something in it.
Florrie, Diana, Cherry - any chance that your Baard principal had a daughter? I was at school (Wynberg Girls High) with a Vivian Baard from Windhoek - we're talking '78-82' - she was a year ahead of me?

Thanks for jolting the old brain cells back to life Florrie. I agree, Carel Fourie wasn't so bad. He was in charge of the boys hostel when I started at Centaurus. During school hours he was one of the strictest teachers around, but after hours he had a heart of gold. One long weekend only us four OM guys were left in the hostel with nowhere to go (Me, my brother, Paul and Tony Gallagher). Mr Fourie booked a chalet in Swakop and took us with for the long weekend. He paid for everything out of his own pocket. Whils't in Swakop, you wouldn't believe he was the strictest teacher at Centaurus. We drank and smoked in front of him and had free reign for the whole weekend without the usual hostel rules and regulations.
About 6 months later the first rumours began of indecent conduct. One of the Std 8 boys in the 1st hockey team mentioned to his parents that Mr Fourie had made a pass at him. The parents ran straight to the newspapers. The rest is history.

Bloody Mike and Alfred went to the CBC - what a bunch of girls.
Why didnt you go to a REAL school such as Sea Point Boys High?
yes1
