Dear colleagues this minutes is able to give you the picture of the preparation of beach clean- up. Oranjemund is also preparing for the beach clean-up on the 15th September 2012, hence NCCI Oranjemund Branch, as one of the stakeholders is been requested to participate in the beach clean-up.
The branch has been invited to attend the first meeting and two of THE Branch Exco. Members were invited to join the chairman.
The Chairman will be out of town and has tasked Mr Jason Amutenya to organise all our business men and women to participate in the scheduled beach clean-up. Business people are been requested to assist the Ministry of Environment and Tourism-Department, at Oranjemund to invite a total participation of the community.
All those who wants to participate are been cordially invited to register themselves at the MET Office or to contact Mr Jason Amutenya.
Clean up of what? In all my years in Omund I never saw anything on the beach that wasn't naturally there.
About 3 years ago, the company upgraded the braai facilities at the beach. Lights were even added to the braai shelters and a nicely painted drum was fixed at each spot for folk to throw away their refuse..... the rubbish truck heads down on a monday and empties the said bins... Needless to say, the nice braai shelters attracted mobs of people and the partying commenced.... this in turn led to folk just breaking bottles all over the small dunes.... allowing braai packaging and papers to drift with the wind .... I was down at the beach last weekend and was astounded to see the amount of broken glass that now surrounds each shelter....
In addition to this certain fisher folk also like to light fires along the sandbar and once they leave, the odd bottle can be found there also... in addition one can also find the odd bit of fishing wire at the hotspots.....
It must be noted however, that the local police now perform spot checks down at the beach, in addition to road blocks at the T- Junction and either confiscate alcohol or send folk home... it is illegal to consume booze in public these days.....
The ironic thing about the beach cleanup.... is the fact that it will be folk that do not utilise the facilities at the beach that will be picking up the trash and not the narrow minded folk....

Bob, for what it;s worth, I recall kinsmen back in the early 80's that besides getting trashed down at the beach shelters, would actually break down the wooden structures for firewood..... strange customs our people had back in those days.... only difference being, that the company would have the place cleaned up on early monday morning and the shelter repaired by tuesday afternoon....

A number of years ago the School children had a education day on environmental issues , and part of the education was things like clean environment & clean living etc . the rewards for kids was sponserd by local bussinesses
After the cleanup , and all the rubbish was neatly stacked in black bags ready for collection by the removal truck , All the children were treated with a nice Burger , Chips and a can o' Coke & a plastic toy . and guess what . After enjoying their Food & drink . they just threw the plastic bags, styrofoam , & empty cans down , right there where they sat and walked off with litter strewn all over the area
The only way to solve the littering problem is with stiff fines.
I hope the new town council gets round to introducing them soon.
I suggest R500 per offense.
People should also not be ashamed to pick up rubbish lying in the streets outside their houses.
Even if its not their litter nobody else is going to pick it up.
The worst litterers are the Garbage men, somebody should tell them that all the rubbish must go into the truck, not half.
Second on the list of offenders are the Jackals, make sure your dustbin can't be pulled over by them.
My solution, which will not be popular... but would be for the council/mine, to put a boom gate up at the beach side of the golf course, plant grass at the braai shelters, improve the facilities by upgrading the shelters and toilets..... build a solid kids play park with grass....a few more braai spots signage is not existent down there.... put a small hut up, create employment for 3/4 workers.... and charge a flat rate of $10.00 to get into the area($5.00 for kids.... $20.00 to use the shelters and $20.00 to camp down there.... The ministry of fisheries could also have better control of the area to check for illegal fishing....
