I was playing a few of his tunes this morning in the office, Michele knew them all from her hostel days, Arthur from his days as a student in Cape Town, oddly enough I also heard his music in the mid 80's at hostel in Cape Town..... was this just a Cape Town phenomenon? Did people up in JHb and Durbs also know the music in those days?

Cape Town - Big Concerts announced on Thursday that the legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez will be heading to South Africa.
Two performances have been scheduled and will take place on Friday 15 February at the Big Arena Carnival City in Johannesburg and Wednesday 20 February at the Grand Arena, Grand West in Cape Town.
The Mexican-American singer-songwriter, known simply as Rodriguez, has been working on his music career in Detroit since the early 1960s.
Folk hero
It was also during this time that he launched his debut album Cold Fact. The album had been banned by the then apartheid government, but a bootleg recording of the album found its way into South Africa and became the official album for the young liberal resistance.
For the next two decades it was a nationwide phenomenon.
Yet, back in Detroit, Rodriguez had no idea that his music had secured him as a household hero for many in South Africa.
After rumours that Rodriguez had committed suicide, two South African fans set out on a journey to find out what really happened to their hero. This eventually led to the making of a documentary Searching For Sugar Man which achieved great success at this year's Sundance Festival in London.
The movie is still showing at selected Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide.
Tickets for the shows will go on public sale via all Computicket channels. Seating plans for Cape Town and Johannesburg are available on Computicket's website as well as Big Concerts' Facebook page.

Rodrigues was HUGE in Durban in the 70's and 80's. I remember buying the album at a back street Indian shop and the tape for my little blue beetle. recently bought the CD and play it often on the road to Lesotho or on the way home from a night out at full ball!
Will have to wait for the DVD to come out as sleepy Bloemfontein won't get the movie.
Another blast from our chequered past ,, we used to listen to his music as teens ,, just now listened to another popular track " I wonder " .. all those memories of booze or dope induced haze evenings flood back ,,,
" I wonder "on par with Peter Sarstedt , where do you go to my lovely ? " a song with questions ,,,
Hey man I'm having fun ,, listening to lots of his tracks on Yoootube ,, gonna have to get cold fact CD ,, all we had then was vinyl ( long gone ) and a tape or two also long gone ,,,
Sandy, still have my vinyl! scratched and a litle bit worn due to consatnt playing. Yip those days and memories and to Peter Sarsted. Revival of all the oldies and even better at musica stores the cds of those times are about 20 bucks a piece, but the momories are priceless. another favourite is Sergio Mendes. Great fun at full ball and doing the sitting samba whilst stuck in traffic on the way home from work!! Love to all at frangipani...... smiley-hug008.gif

You can now pre-order the DVD for Searching For Sugarman on Amazon - not sure of release date but it's obviously close at hand. Tried to get concert tickets last week whilst in Cape Town but there wasn't even a single seat open at any of the shows. Just shows what a movie can do for one's career. He's been here before (a few years ago) and played small venues on a very low-key tour. Glad to see that his fortunes have changed - in more ways than one!!
I already did my pre order on Kalahari , both the dvd and the Cd.... felt that it was only right to purchase the man's cd after listening to pirated versions of it all these years.... If you have enjoyed his music, and even if you have an mp3 stashed on your pc.... make a plane and support this man......
allgood

Maybe it was modified later.

I have yet to see the movie Searching for Sugarman. But after watching the above youtube clip, I wonder if the movie, Searching for Sugarman was not copied from the movie Searching for Jesus?
As I recall from seeing Searching for Jesus, it was a "mini movie" which was locally produced (on a limited budget) and flighted a number of times by M-Net. The guys who were central to the actual search for, and finding of, Jesus were involved so there is commonality between the two productions. The earlier version was probably something of a prototype for the evential movie.
Sixto Díaz Rodríguez I was listening to an American 60 minuets pod cast and this gentleman's name came up and although he was not a hit in America seemingly he was well known in South Africa. The thing that caught my attention was he was born in Detroit in 1942 and I had been talking to my brother on Skype he lives in Detroit, and new nothing about him. So the question is did anyone know his songs or about him there in SA......................................Obviously you have heard of him New-year3

Searching for Sugar Man, about a singer whose musical star faded without a trace until he was rediscovered in South Africa, won the best documentary feature Oscar on Sunday.
The film tells the story of Sixto Rodriguez, who made two albums in the early 1970s but then quit music - and who knows nothing about his fame on another continent.
The documentary was made by first-time director Malik Bendjelloul, who first discovered Rodriguez while travelling for six months in Africa in 2006, and was fascinated by his story.
2013 Oscars: The list of winners
The award was accepted by Bendjelloul and producer Simon Chinn, who explained why Rodriguez did not attend the Oscars show at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
"He didn't want to take any of the credit himself. That just about says everything about that man and his story that you want to know," Chinn said.
"He doesn't see it as his film. He's genuinely a humble man," he added.
Bendjelloul said he learned that Rodriguez was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1942, but his musical career ended almost before it began, while all other stars around him were making musical history in Motown.
