Title: Big school sportsevent.
Post by: georg ruf jr. on November 13, 2007, 08:30:57 PM
Somehow some of us hated the way we had to learn to sing on the "Big sport event". Don't know what it was called. Athletics and swimming. Comning to Germany, it was something I missed. We had pt at school, but the rest was done private. No competition in school.
Does ops still have Oppenheimer (blue) Benato (green) Rhodes (red) ???

I loved our inter-house athletics days. I have never seen another school that goes to such lengths for inter-house. Remember how we all had to make rosettes in our house colours and wear them on sports days? We also used to call on individual teachers to take the stand when we were cheerleading. They gave a singing cup and a cheerleading cup to the best team too. We had to stay on the stands and keep our area clean.

As a kid I hated the idea that you were forced to go to those sporting events, I always thought, who the hell gave the company the right to force me to take my free saturday to attend a sporting event that I never liked....

I was in Blue House "Oppenheimer" I loved sport's day used scream my lungs out. Only I wasn't very sporty, used to run up to the high jump pole with great enthusiasm beliving I could do it ,then stop dead in front of the pole.As for running well I'm still coming in.Very sad really,   :pianto1:  as I so bady wanted to take part. Never the less I have found my forte in life  poledancing .

Terry Early was the big sportsman at the time won all the trophy's.How cool I thought he was then.If I'm not mistaken He was also in Oppenheimer, probably the only sportsman they ever had.

We are Joe Soaps army

we can not fight we can not loose

what blinking use are we

and when we get to Berlin

the Kaiser he will say

hoch hoch mein Gott

Must you remind us of assembly, Michael??? Remember Dr. Venter up on stage? This was like going to the army. The typical german "Marschmusik". Then the hymns.

Were'nt all the teachers on the stage? i don't remember, then he would march in from the back and everyone would have to stand!  I seemed to have blocked out quite a bit of the OPS memories!~

I remember the school play, "The Wizard of Oz", the carpenters had to build a stage by the fishpond at OPS, a lights studio was built on the roof next to the school hall, that must have been the biggest play the school ever performed!

We did a school play called Christopher Robin. We were all toys that came out to play when he went to sleep. I was a ragdoll and can still remember the song started Raggedy Doll, Raggedy Doll, 1,2,3...... The Golliwogs were the best because they had black stockings on their heads with their faces on the back, it couldn't be seen from the audience and really confused them.

I think the teachers used to sit on chairs facing the stage and only Dr Venter and anyone talking was on the stage. We had to sit cross-legged on the floor. We had to line up in rows before going to class or to the hall. Does anyone remember trying to get to school so early that it was still dark, and what a nice feeling that was?

Yes we'd have a race to see who could be the first person at school.I won once what a cool feeling that was.

Hi everyone - just got Shannon's homework book out of the cupboard and so here goes:

School song

Oranjemund our desert school
with pride of thee we sing
and proudly learn our lessons well
more praise to thee we bring
for many hands from many lands
are clasped in friendship true
to win our way at work or play
Oranjemund for you

And onward striving as we go
more knowledge to attain
that never failing torch that glows
will always be our aim
though wide the field and vast the sphere
if humbly we attend
we'll run the race with God's good grace
and run it to the end.

The end!

Can't say I remember the second verse! Anyone else remember it?

Hi Florrie - sorry but they only put the new national anthem in the homework books these days - I'm sure Mike or Georg will have the words to das Suidwesterlied (sp?) somewhere! Mike's busy watching a movie at the moment so will probably only respond tomorrow.

will need georgswa to confirm that this is the true words

Suidwes-lied
Hard soos kameeldoring hout ja hard is ons land
en droog o so droog sy riviere
Die son het die klippe en die klippe gebrand
in veld en in bos skuil die diere
As iemand nou aan jou sou vra
wat bind my aan die gewes
dan kan ek net sê ja
my hart kies Suidwes

Was hält euch denn hier fest?
Wir könnten nur sagen:
Wir lieben Südwest!

Doch uns're Liebe ist teuer bezahlt,
trotz allem, wir lassen dich nicht,
Weil unsere Sorgen überstrahlt
der Sonne hell leuchtendes Licht.
Und sollte man uns fragen:
Was hält euch denn hier fest?

Was hält dich denn hier fest?
Du könntest nur sagen:
Ich liebe Südwest!
