Andrew morrow and I put a couple of planks up in a tree in the "woods" next to the power station go toward 5th avenue. This must have been 74 or 75. If you stood below this tree, you could hardly see the top of the tree. Our den was right on the top. I haven't a clue how we got the stuff up there, but I'm sure it was Andys strong will that encouraged us. If sitting in the den you would be looking over the top of the trees. As far as I remember they were the same evergreens planted arround town.
all these years I wondered, wether anybody ever found our secret hiding place. Does anybody know?
@ Georg junior ... I think there were a lot more secret tree dens than you knew in that patch of trees next to the power station ,, if your could not be seen then so could the others unless one took the time to climb as many trees as you could , we had one in the 60/s in the first avenue trees at the top of a very tall conifer .. same there many unknown dens .. most probably only found when the trees fall down ..
May I ask you about your and where or how we met?
Is Sandy your nickname?
@ Georg Junior ... just ask your father .. Sandy Buchanan ... check reply on personal messages . Sandy
I remember a Buchanen family living in the 2'nd or 3'rd avenue. On the west side of town. A couple that had, I'd think, 3 kids. One of their sons was called Danny.
@ Georg , Nope wrong family .. we stayed in 11th avenue .. you should remember my Mom from the shopping center ,, and if I remember correctly your Mom worked there too at some time ... and ask your father . I was one of his troublesome appies ..
lol He sure has forgotten.
Your right. My mom worked in the food-department.
Do you have any pics of yourself and your mom? In which department did she work in? I saw a pic of a Sandy somewhere on this site, but I'M sure it's somebody else.
There are several people on this site that remember, esspecialy the girls. My red curls! I just don't remember them.
Just a thought Boy Georg,Do you ever sleep? :wow1:
Now that you mention Food Dept. I can clearly see your mother. What was her first name?
I've been waiting all these years to get in contact. This seems to be the most important thing in my life at the moment. lol
Inge
LOL Thats it,Inge, its taken me this long to fathom out who the Ruf's were.My mom worked in the shoe dept. (Elsie Boehme) The middle aged lady with the two pony tails.I worked upstairs in accounts and in stationery but that was way back in 1975 just before I married. You should remember one of my brothers. Keith, Shawn or Alfred they more of your age.
Keith and Alfred are on the site. I don't recognise Alfreds pic. Maybe you could send me some from the 70s
@ Georg jnr .. you would remember My Mom as the auntie with the deep purple hair .. working in the fancy goods department .... the picture in teenagers of our time a beach party is me ..
I do remember your mom, the hair... I don't recognise anybody on any photo. Not even Babara Fry. There's one pic in Lüderitz of a guy who reminds me of Andey Morrow, but it must be someone else...
Thanks for trying.
Georg
Hey Georg Jnr, I drove past those tree's today, did'nt have time to stop, did a quick scan, and some of them are really thick at the top, I will now have to find time to make a closer inspection.....
:emot19_2:
Sandy did your dad work at 2 plant arround 1986 if I remember he grew a pony tail
I think he was a fitter and he's foreman was Ernest Greyling ?
@ Alfred .. No definitely not ... I am having a chuckle thinking of my Dad with a ponytail .. he was foreman at central fields boiler shop and later at uubvlei as well ... we stayed up the road from you in 11th ave .. we were E 35 right at the end in the 70s .... Your sister Dianna and I were in the same social crowd as teens ..
believe it or not sandy, but georgrufswa had hair to his sholdiors (probably spellt wrong). His kids had trouble in school if the hair as far as the ears or reached anywhere near the blazer. Now theres no hair left to grow. I've even got less than my dad.
Long live the hippies. arf arf :Weed_Spin_2:
Hi Sandy,
I was thinking what your Dad would have said if he was remembered as having a pony tail, and chuckling to myself, even before I read your reply.

Hi Sandy
I bet you don't remember me. We lived in 70/2nd and i was friends with the Stanbridge girls - your then neighbours other side the alley. I remember thinking at the time that you were quite "out of the ordinary" due to the fact that you were quite happy to "play" with us girls. Are you still in O'mund? I remember your mom as if it were yesterday - she sold me the first pair of earings I bought with my first salary earned during the holidays of 1977.
Hi Cheryl .. out of the ordinary ? .. march to the beat of ones own drum ?yes Indeed I was .. I do remember you .. many happy childhood memories .. I stay in CT since 1980 .. production manager at a packaging manufacturer ... My Mom passed on in 2001 ... I will post a pic or two for you Ok ??
Go well Sandy
Cheryl here a pic or two ...........
Hi Sandy, goodmorning
Thanks for the pics - sorry to hear about your mom - I remember her well. Yes, I did march to the beat of my own drum too. I was the fatty that fitted in no-where. Thank goodness we grow up and mature and in most cases loose the "puppy fat" too. I will send you a pic as soon as I get some loaded onto my PC. I'm in Welgemoed - where are you? Do you still have contact with Desiree Stanbridge?
Regards
Cheryl
Cheryl .. Woodstock Cape Town .. has a nice laid back feeling to it so have been staying in the same house for the last 27 years ..
Hi Sandy
And there you were under my nose all these years! I worked as an Occupational Sister at House of Monatic in Salt River for 10yrs and my favourite doctor had a surgery in Woodstock! Big developments taking place thre now.
Here's a snapshot of the Tree's behind the powerstation and the Water Reservoir of the GM's , that Clive Symes remembers swimming in.....
ThanKs Mike.
Checked this in google the other day. There are hardly any trees left. You couldn't see the wall of the powerstation through the trees in the 70s.
I remember running about the "woods" with Leigh McBrides big Labrador. I think his name was Digger.
Outta all the tree's that were planted in Oranjemund, these tree's were the group that felt like you were walking through a real Alpine forest......(IN THE 70's that was)
And that's why we had our den up in one of the trees. We (the late Andy Morrow) were unseen...
