Title: Namibian Chicken Price Rip Off!!!!!
Post by: Michael Alexander on May 14, 2013, 10:24:57 AM
Well seem's like the local chicken producers have gotten the Infant Protection Status (IPS) that they have been trying to get our Government to grant them for the last year.

Citing investment and job creation in Namibia.....  they go on to explain how the South Africans are dumping in Namibia, to this I say nonsense, I have been importing SA chicken for the last 18 years at prices on which we made deals, these are normal negotiated prices.....  as of next week, I will be (forced)buying in Namibian chicken, let me give you a sample of the pillage which is about to ensue for the customer....

My current retail price for 1.5kg IQF Chicken - N$ 36.95
My Namibia COST price for 1.5kg IQF Chicken - N$ 42.99 ( I Must still put my markup on this)

Why can the Government not see how the "Big" Namibian business is getting the consumer to carry their poorly planned business venture..... you did the same thing with Namdairies  7 years ago.......

So much for living in a democracy where we are meant to have freedom of choice....

Wonder who owns the top shares in the Nam Chicken industries....

What will happen here, is say for example the Namibian consumers consumed 100 Ton of poultry a month on average.... seeing that this is/was the cheapest form of protein available for  the nation.... well due to the price of poultry being more expensive now, I forsee less folk being able to afford to purchase chicken and that there will actually be a drop in consumption, which relates to less tax money for the gov....

Somebody do your homework.... stop screwing your own people!

Just my 2 cents......

Surely you have the choice to display chicken from various suppliers Mike?
The big supermarkets here display chicken from various parts of the world.
Sometimes the British poultry is more expensive than chicken that comes from New Zealand. (perhaps the chickens had to fly over here under their owm steam??????).
I guess its the same the world over..... A few fat cats calling the shots with a few healthy backhanders to the right people.

Something certainly smells a bit FOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually Mike, Taking into account the currant exchange rate. You are paying roughly £2.05 per kilogram. The average price over here is roughly £7.00 per kilo.
I know you have to take into account the average wages and so on but it really gets on my t£ts that all the big supermarkets seem to get together and agree on prices so as not to start price wars..

Blerry annoying,,,,,,,,,,,

No, I have no choice any longer, that democratic right was removed when I was told by our democratic ministry that I have to buy from the only NAMIBIAN producer, that's a monopoly in my eyes.....

If somebody in finance did their sums correctly, they would see in a years time that they are actually going to lose money...

This happened when they did the same thing for milk. About 7 years ago, Namibian Milk producer, NAMDAIRIES, tried the same trick, applied for IPS, all imported dairy had a 40% surcharge slapped on it, to try and force us to buy Namibian, this store in Oranjemund use to move 4 pallets of UHT milk a week, I warned the powers that be what was about to happen, the sales of UHT milk went from 4 pallets to 1 pallets a week, the Namibian produced UHT milk was too expensive for the consumers, so that hardly moved, in essence the gov lost sales tax on imports and VAT..... 7 years later, once the protection status falls away, NAMDAIRIES is feeling pressure as the milk from South Africa is flooding in and it's cheaper..... cheaper in the sense that this is their normal price and not dumping...... I get to sell Fresh 2lt milk from ZA for $2.00 cheaper than the Nam milk.......

It will take a year or two to get the customers back..... but the powers that be don't understand this.... would'nt be surprised if some person in a gov position has interests in the chicken business.... but suffer the people.....

Over protection and dumping are both bad trade practice ..  healthy competition  is good trade practice  ,  pity is the people in Govt  that either allow dumping or over protection are insulated from the real effects  so dont give a fig , most likely getting the backhander ,,    ThatStinks2

Be'ing a shiraz drinking Granny I've actualy lost the plot with this thread....anyways I have always looked at chicken been a cheaper meal BUT now looking at R29.99 per kilo for boned chicken breast I guess my dogs are going to sh* t  off  ......this is down South. As for the milk R6.49 per litre. Guess our O'mund should move North West of Malmsberry (sp)

The Supermarkets here did the same with milk, dropped the price to under $2 for 2 liters each Supermarket follow suit it's good for the consumers but the dairy farmers have no choice but to accept what they are being payed and for the last year they have been conning us with this permeated free white milk.

Milk permeate is a by-product of the dairy production process, formed after ultrafiltration of milk to extract protein and fat used to produce cheese. Permeate has a watery consistency, and is green in color due to the presence of B vitamins. It consists of lactose, water, vitamins and minerals.
Permeate may be added to fresh milk as part of a process called standardization  to keep consistent levels of fat and protein in the product which may have seasonal variations. In addition, using permeate as an additive can save dairy processors the cost of disposing of the product.
The re-addition of permeate to milk has caused some controversy. In 2008, dairy farmers in Australia accused food producers of "watering down" milk with permeate to save costs by reducing the volume of milk required from farmers. The processors acknowledged that permeate was added to milk for retail sale, but that this was done to standardise levels of fat and protein as required by food standards regulations. However food standards just require a minimum content of fat and protein for regular milk, and a maximum fat content but same minimum protein for skim milk.
Although there are no known health risks associated with consumption of permeate, further consumer concerns in 2012 over its addition to milk resulted in several milk brands and dairy processors in Australia declaring their products as "permeate-free".
Now they are advertising Milk as Pasteurization and Homogenization' and there is semmingly a problem with this process as explaned below.

The Major Problems with Pasteurized Dairy
Pasteurization destroys nutrients such as Vitamins B-12, B-6, C, A, beneficial bacteria, as well as denatures delicate milk proteins and vital enzymes. Because of the denaturization of proteins and the destruction of enzymes, pasteurized dairy promotes the growth of pathogens and potentially harmful bacteria. These same bacteria are not harmful in raw milk. Calves fed pasteurized dairy develop very poorly and often die before maturity. In humans, pasteurized dairy is a DIRECT CAUSE of sinus and respiratory infections, tooth decay, allergies, colic in infants, stunted growth, intestinal and digestive issues, leaky gut, heart disease and osteoporosis. Because pasteurized dairy lacks enzyme activity, it turns putrid rather than sour. Processors must remove pus through a process called centrifugal clarification.
Modern pasteurization methods called 'ultra pasteurization' are an even more virulent form of pasteurization. This process heats milk to temperatures of 180F, preserving shelf life and destroying nutrients in greater amounts.

Homogenization
Homogenization has been called "the worst thing dairymen have done to milk." Homogenization filters and presses milk fats at 4,000 pounds per square inch, which causes a reduction of size of fat globules. This process oxidizes milk fats making them carcinogenic and toxic to the body.
Homogenization causes a release of an enzyme, Xanthine Oxidase, which is harmful once artificially broken down into a smaller state. Xanthine Oxidase has been shown to adhere to arterial walls and is identified as causative in heart disease.
Because raw milk proteins are digested in the presence of milk enzymes, the process of pasteurization and homogenization destroys these natural biological processes. The human digestive tract often recognizes these damaged milk proteins as antigens and the body may mount an immune response. This is a primary reason why pasteurized dairy is associated with mucous production, leaky gut, allergies and autoimmune processes.
Permeate may be added to fresh milk as part of a process called standardization  to keep consistent levels of fat and protein in the product which may have seasonal variations. In addition, using permeate as an additive can save dairy processors the cost of disposing of the product..........................Drink Rum  food-smlie-012.gif or  BierSuip

... and so the local chicken producer get's protection status from the Gov and then this fine morning, I receive an email from them informing me that the price will be moving up as of the 5th next month. That means my cost price on a 1.5kg bag will now be 46.99 and retail at 49.99 .... amazing to think that just a month ago I was retailing the SA 1.5kg bag for 36.99 .......... What is confusing, is that nobody appears to be complaining in the media about this monopoly..... I see at the bottom of the increase letter , the mobsters have a sentence stating, "Thank You for your continued Support" .... that should read, "Thank You for your FORCED support"....

I have nothing to hide, so all you locals, read the notice board at SPAR and you can be more informed as to how this monopoly is screwing the Namibian nation...

Well, like I said..... Went to my freezer to see how much of my stock of chicken sold over the month end weekend.... well most of it is still there, in fact I would go as far as to say at least 75% of the stock is still there.....

On a normal month end, I would have sold all of the chicken on Monday already, with the new batch arriving ont he Tuesday lorry from ZA......

I have given up trying to explain this to the powers that be, but dear GOV, YOU HAVE LOST VAT ON THE STOCK I SHOULD HAVE SOLD.... people ain't buying the chicken because it is now to expensive.....  OPEN YOUR EYES, YOU ARE STARVING YOUR OWN PEOPLE!!!!!!!!

I have just received a concession to import value added chicken products, i.e. chciken pies, chicken sausage, viennas, nuggets... leg quarters  but not for the main lines like Fresh Chicken and IQF bags.... It was also reported in the papers that a similar ban is going to be imposed on the dairy industry in order to protect the local monopoly ,Namdairies.... this is the same bunch of cows who have just finished a 7 year stint of being protected and still could'nt make it work..... so very soon , no SA yoghurt and milk, if there is, it will be at a 40% increase ...

I have given up fighting against a brick wall.... if this government thinks they are protecting local industry at the price of placing further economic hardship on the man on the street......well let them carry on..... It's like pissing into the wind....
