Title: Non-Oranjemunder wants to ask a question please
Post by: empyrean on November 18, 2007, 08:05:11 AM
Firstly I apologise for hi jacking your site as an interloper.  I just wanted to ask a couple of questions then I'll go away.  We have always wanted to cross into Namibia through Oranjemund but the map shows that you can't. Yesterday my neighbour told me that the border was now open and that there is a ferry across the Orange River. I can't find anything about it on the internet so can anyone advise if it's true and also, if so, would we be allowed to drive the road up to Luderitz along the coast? Any  info would be very much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation... Chris

Hi There

As far as i know you can not enter Namibia through, in yesr to come i think yes.

In the Richtersveld area, Sendlingsdrift was opened recently, that must be what you are talking about

@ Chris

The Ferry (Sendlingsdrift) brings you across the Oranje near Fish River Canyon and Rosh Pina.

For touring a nice trip, for travelling only, not my choice

I assume you com from SA via Sprinbok ????

Regards Georg

HI Georg
Yes we are living in Cape Town, been here for 2 years (from UK)and absolutely love travelling in Namibia.  Only thing is it gets a bit boring driving through Voolsdrift every time so we were hoping to see a different part.  We've driven along the Orange to Rosh Pina and whilst the drive by the river is fun the road from RP to Aus is a bit grim.  Although the petrol station in RP does do great chips..
We're leaving SA for Australia at the end of the year so were hoping to see Oranjemund area before we leave. I really appreciate the info I think we might use the Sendlingsrift crossing just for a change
Thanks very much for such a quick response.
Chris

Chris ,
indeed  Namibia  is a  beautiful  country ..   enjoy  your  travels , and also hope  you can  see  our wonderful  hometown  in  your travels  before  it  really  degenerates  into  another  bankrupt  dusty    town ...   When I  grew  up  there in  the 50's to 70's   it  was  a  green  jewel  in  the  desert ..  would have liked  to  stay  but  in order  to  grow  one  has  to leave  the  security    of that  haven and  hit  the  real  world  ..   CT  was always  my  town  ..  thanks  to  the  laid back  atmosphere  and  of  course  the  mountain ...

             Sandy

Chris, I live in Omund...PM your phone number, I can organise you a permit to cross the Bridge at Alexander Bay and then drive along  the North Bank of the Orange to Rosh Pinah....in Fact if you wanted to stay over in Omund , there are guest houses here now...let me know...

Cheers
Mike

In retrospect, the pont at Ochta, Sendelinsdrift opened 3 weeks back, you can also cross over there via the Richtersveld National park, but bear in mind that there are set hours.....
