A bit late by two weeks, but the last young standwolf living down at Swartkops was hit by a car and killed.....
For those that knew, there were a family of three living here and the mother of and other cub were killed awhile back.
One can only wonder how many more of these scarce animals we will be losing once those gates are thrown open!
Once on a late night assignment at the old Mittag workshops I got impatient waiing for for lift to home to arrive and started walking along the Mittage road in the dark expecting to meet up with the driver.
It was pitch dark, I could barely see where the road was. After about five minutes I got a creepy feeling that something was following me and suddenly recalled an incident about a month earlier when we arrived at the workshops one morning to find a gemsbok carcass literally ripped to pieces with blood everywhere and strandwolf tracks all around.
That thought did it for me. No use turning back, the thing whatever it was, was behind me. Fortunately a substation loomed up just then. All sparkies carried a substation key in those days so I nipped inside and waited there until the headlights of the car signalled its arrival.
I never pulled that stunt again and ever since had a healthy respect for the strandwolf.
Wonder if any person has been bitten in the history of Oranjemund?
I recall a few years back, there was a Strandwolf in town, chewing a few folks dogs.....
:wow1:
Shame, that's sad. Don't know of any human that's been attacked by one. They are extremely shy and would rather run away from humans.
I know as a kid my Mom told me they actually eat naughty boys at night, but I think it was just to keep me home after dark... image14
