Oranjemunders, I am a big man! I enjoy my beer and food, but hell! in the back of my mind I cannot stop thinking about those fire's outside the Tote at the Mule Derby where the people were braaing those big white (Bratwurst?) sausages...... Slurp! Who made those things? Anyone got a recipe?
Munch! Munch! ;D
Our big annual treat at the Mule Derby was Candy Floss.
I can only remember those horrible pink sausages that they used to sell - no wonder I don't eat meat anymore!
I seem to recall Mr Leube ( remember Peter Leube ? ) the Butcher making them at one stage .. the abbatoir had a sausage and salami making and smoking facility as did the Butchershop have sausage making facility as well , I recall Mr Huntley giving us all a freshly made salami when we did our orientation tour at the start of our apprenticeships ... The Butcher shop ..Rene Head worked there .. at the back they ahd a foot driven sharpening wheel ... We did have the luxury of properly qualified butchers and fleischmeisters in that town so that should help answer the question of the delicious Bratwurst ...
There was also a George Hitala or something that made the Sausages in the 70's I think, and then there was Gordon the Butcher in the 70'80's , affectionately known as POPS,
man there were stories!
;)
memories mike,i rember the mule/donkey derby, the red sausages, viennas as i rember and the sossaties, meat on a stick, lekker man,ive just dicovered a south african shop in the uk called sussmans, you can order over the net and get next day delivery any where in the uk,boere worse, mrs balls chutney, milo, log bars, hansa beer the works.as they say,you can take the man out of oranjemund but you can never take oranjemund out of the man,
Hansa Beer was a good one, then they stopped making it for a few years as the SAB had the rights to it, even though it's a Swakopmund beer, it was relaunched 2 years back, but just ain't the same. Here in the shop , Windhoek Draught in a can 440mml, is the most popular...
Slurp! Guess what I'm doing this afternoon?
???
Gordon .. Aspeling I think the surname was .. started to work in the power station , lost his hair in clumps cos of the low fequency noise stress . so then they gave him a job in the abbatoir or butchery .. hair grew back thicker and more luxuriant .. must have been all the meat ...
hehehe, I think pops lost tuffs of hair due to the "Bells" , anyhow they battled to get him outta town when he reached retirement age, he managed to avoid security and township for just over 6 months until they cornered him down at the beach on afternoon.
The old butcher never wanted to leave here, he just wanted to retire here, but in those days you were'nt allowed to. Yes it was indeed Aspeling
Anyhow he passed away about 4 or 5 years back in retirement in Cape Town....
He had one helluva foul mouth on him and would put that old Father priest in FAther TEd to shame....
He would often appear in my folks lounge at 2 in the morning, just sitting their sipping his Bells and staring at the TV...
One things for sure, the day before I was due to return to boarding school , as clockwork , Pops would come to our house and bring the biggest pieces of biltong you had ever seen, for me to take to boarding school......
Go Pops. ! :'(
Yes Gordon .. quite a character ... I was working in Caseys at the time the hair started to fall out .. he was pretty new in the town then ... As for the noise stress yes it got to some people .. I remember being very Jangled and jittery at the end of a day working in the power station and that was even wearing the compulsory ear muffs . some could take it some couldnt ...
Gordon , was known as "Cockcroach" during the hair loss years. Sandy you must have worked with Wullie Prinsloo and Frankie Quirk?
???
ANd here is a pic of the Mule Derby in April 1975, more to follow on the next website update....
Ah! yes Frankie .. fond of him, a nice guy .. they stayed a couple of houses up from us in 2nd Ave .. Willie Prinsloo , tall greying hair , kind of quiet guy .. stayed in 8th Ave is my memory .. reading about your problems with power cuts ... We never to my best recollection had any power cuts of consequence when we had the power station ... most eerie thing was the day they switched off and went onto Eskom ,, 78/79 ... it was as if the town lost a pulse .. that low frequency sound travelled far and wide ... and when it was not there suddenly we had untill we got used to it this silence and a feeliong that " something was missing " knid of like when some city folk go out into the country .. they find the nights disturbingly quiet ..........
One of the best thing about Oranjemund - the nights are so quiet, only the jackals crying in the distance! We find it quite difficult to get used to Cape Towns sirens and traffic at night when we are there!
Micky Reshcke, used to be one of the people that cooked those derby sausages, its years since I had one but I do remember them well.
Mule derby time also used to be great for knocking down a few coconuts. The biggest one if I remember correctly was filled with "Lead" cause it never seemed to break or move and every one aimed for it.
Jim Ockwell and Roy Fields used to take turns running the coconut stall.
Micky's wife Anita, still comes up here just about once a year for a few weeks to stay with my in laws. Nice lady, and not only because she gave me Jagermeister at Xmas.... :D
Yes Clive, I too recall Mickey Reschke sweating over the Bratwurst (with a sprinkling of parsley) sausages! He spoiled me for life as since those days I have never come across any that come close to the taste or "crunch" of his sausages. Aah the memories........now I'm really hungry!
those coconuts were my nemises, i would go at them everytime. one time i got seven ....i dont even like coconut
when i think derby sausages, i think edgar selby. i can see him standing behind the stall, apron on, tongs in one hand, beer in the other, turning those sausages. OMG - they were THE BEST - to this day have never found anything that comes near them (and believe me, i've tried)!
Sometime there has to be a reunion of Ex-Oranjemunders in Cape Town & I dont just mean ( Pensioners) I mean who ever wants to come.
Derby sausages must be served, who knows the recepie ?
Clive, are you on about the white bratwurst sausage or those pink things, I reckon that red dye is more than likely a banned substance by now.......
:D
Hey Clive you must be close to pension...... hee hee :) Great idea. What would be the cut off age so I know whether I invited.
mike, the derby sausages were the white bratwurst ones - as you bit into them, the juice splattered everywhere. aaah, what i wouldn't do for one now........those "pink things" were sold in the butchery in a flat black container type base, cling wrapped. i loved them - my mom used to cut them up and fry them for us.
Bratwurst .. yes I have bought some deli made ones but roasted them in the oven and served with mash and sauerkraut .. If you missing them really badly .. I went to the Biscuit Mill in salt river on a saturday morning .. they have a market day .. food stalls , wines , cheeses .. fresh breads you name it ...communal eating on long tables .. a festive atmosphere .. there was a guy selling Bratwurst done over the coals .. served in a roll with the sauerkraut if wanted and german mustard .. yummy .. very close to the childhood taste ..
Oooorrrr !!
HEY! maybe its just that our tastebuds are jaded with time ?? I remember the one long weekend we had " borrowed " Peter Watsons Aunts car ( and Anglia ) and were at the tender age of 17 sans licence driving Cape Town flat in various states of inebriation and other substances ... We had a meal one night of Bought roast chicken .. tomatoes raw onion and cheese slices one assembled bits of each in the mouth and then chewed .. mixing all the flavours .. I still have good memories of the taste but cannot replicate it .. I suppose a sort of Kodak moment for the taste buds ?? never to be repeated .
Omunders living in Cape Town and surrounding areas, try Rath the German Deli in the Garden Centre in the Gardens - good German food.
Richard 8)
thanks richard, will definitely make a turn there. i know dennis proctor has also been scouting cape town for many years now trying to find the real mcoy derby sausages. with uncle frans being austrian, he has a love for any food of germanic origin. will let him know too.
The Rath butcher in the Garden Centre is part of the Hartliefs group, in fact if I'm not mistaken the Rath family own Hartliefs, Great Landjagers!........For a function held in the Powerstation, (The new functions hall) , I ordered about 60kg of bratwurst to braai... fresh brotchen, butter not marge and real mustard, not that sweet artificial stuff. now thats how you make 'em. ps, it helps if there is an ice cold draught machine nearby!
Slurp!
;)
Looks Like I'm too late to give the feed back to Mike, but yes, BRATWURST, definitly not the pink or red Viennas.
Delia, Dianna, just thinking of the way you described them make me lus for one now.
Delia, the Frans you mention is that Frans & Marie Redel??
Sandy, I had some smoked Pork neck, mash and Sauerkrautt a while back but your right, the Bratwurst ( I think I am going to follow Richards advise & go into the Garden Centre next time I visit my Mom)
Mike, your EVIL! I could kill for one of those Rolls now ( any chance of a delivery)
Sorry folks - not "Rath" but "Raith" in Garden Centre Cape Town - went there this morning a bought some Bratwurst (white sausage like old Omund Derby sausages), Bockwurts (like big brown vienna sausage), nice German rolls, sauerkraut and genuine German mustard.
Having Stephen and Diana Rudd (Boehme) around for a German come Mule Derby braai and watching England being thrashed by the USA ha ha - just sturing!
Yes Mike Raith is connected to Hartlief some where down the line - Zurbans coffee shop (Garden Centre no longer operational) in the 80s and 90s was also connected - they had brilliant breakfasts - Debby and I used to go there one Saturday morning a month in the 80s for breakfast.
Keep well.
Richard 8)
Richard,
Best I could come up with today, was a Ham Roll and some French mustard - I've made it my mission get some proper Wurst for next weekend.
Well folks the Bratwurt braai has begun.
Here are some pictures - eat your hearts out!
Stephen Rudd (left) and me doing the braaing - only thing missing the sausages do not give off much smoke and good braai smell.
Cheers
Richard + Stephen 8)
Richard,
This is adding insult to injury, my mouths watering.
Give Steve & Diane my regards
Clive
I hope you used real butter and real mustard..... I had a sober day so far, 3 games of rugger watched and now for my big one the delayed transmission of the cheetah game.... glad province and the lions won though!
mY BRAAI was quick and easy 2day, steal and drumsticks.... must order some bratwurst sometime... ;)
This morning I found a small delli in Kenridge the stocks, fresh Bratwurst from Raith's in Garden Centre Cape.
Saturday that's what i'm having
ooh richard - you nasty man - i can see all ex o'munders having to clean out their keyboards from all the drool :D
Clive - yes, it's Uncle Frans Redl i'm talking about. he passed away a while back - aunty marie is still living in Onrus?? (i can never remember the name of the town) as far as i know.
someone better warn raith's re the impending tsunami of "derby sausage mad" o'munders so he can stock up!!
Hi Delia,
I had my derby sausages for lunch today, boy are they rich (though not as jucy as the ones I remember)
I'm sorry to hear about Frans, I remembering him fixing my 750's Saddle after the dog munched through it ( It was a brand new bike as well, never thought a dog could be jealous.)
Where those bright red vienna's just called red Viennas or was there another name for them.... today at Spar , I watched the butchery take hot steaming fresh viennas out the cooker.... People that eat meat, I kid you not,, the best time to try a vienna is then... when it's just been made.......
No wonder I weigh so much........ :D
As far as I know they were just good old viennas. I was 4yrs old when we arrived in O'mund 40 odd yrs ago. I only new those red viennas. When we went on leave I found normal ones strange. After leaving O'mund I was horrified that you couldn't buy them, all those years I thought red viennas were the norm.Loved them and can still remember the taste.
i told you guys months ago that those red ones are VIENNAS,got no reply, god those lekker sausages from the butchers were the best
Bobby, the red dye has got to you, its been banned ( the Viennas are now a beige colour)
We used to dip the red one's in Mayo and chow them with fresh bread
The trick with the vienna's or Bratwurst... is to use Original Hot English Mustard, not that sweet stuff you give to the kids these days.....
Mustard schmustard!
:D
Is that the powdered stuff you mix up, because it bites back
as found in a 24 news site i subscribe to.........
A hobby historian has discovered the oldest known recipe for German sausage, a list of ingredients for Thuringian bratwurst nearly 600 years old.
I remember those "pink sausages'. After a visit to the abbatoirs I was put off them and all processed meat for life!!! till today I don't eat the stuff. The first time my son ate a red vienna he got sick in my lap and i decided then that they were bad news and never agin!!
Think I might braai Derby Bratwurst sausages at the bowls 2morrow nite... Slurp!
