Kevin and I were both in Rhodes, we didn't seem to do very well at the swimming or athletics but in Std 5 I was a cheerleader and we won the cup for spirit!

Shannon is also in Rhodes and this year they won the gala and athletics. Shannon came first in the freestyle under 9's - that was really exciting.

Was the pool covered in when you were still here? Can't quite remember what year Mike Curtis and a lot of other parents decided to make the school an indoor pool - it took quite a bit of getting used to for those of us who were used to it being an outdoor swimming pool!

I go with Mike - Barnato forever!  They were good as sports and swimming.  In the 60's our competition for sports was always against Rhodes because Oppenheimer were rubbish - they were good at singing though.  I must admit even way back then they were good at swimming, but then so were Barnato, and Rhodes struggled!  I was pretty good at swimming but my big claim to fame on Sports Day was joint second in the three legged.  Now there's a career I could have built on.  Did you have a beauty parade at your Gala?

"RHODES FOREVER"

Those great songs we used to sing, and moms running next to the field shouting for their kids.

Drom, Drom, Drom die rooi span kom
Klap, Klap, Klap die rekort spat
Dumalaka, Dumalaka, Dumalaka Da
Rooi gaan wen oh ja, ja, ja.
(I think)

All the girls wanted to be cheerleeder so they could were those short satin skirts.

Great times

THEY SAY THAT OPPENHEIMER'S THE BRIDGE RIGHT INTO TOWN
THEY SAY THAT RHODES WAS FOUNDED FOR CARS TO RIDE AROUND
BUT WE ALL KNOW BARNARTO'S BEST.......................

I WAS ACTUALLY IN OPPENHEIMER WHY I REMEMBER BARNATO"S SONG WHO KNOWS.

Barnato - in my std 5 year ('77) - we won the interhouse swimming - we had a strong swimming team that year and i like to think it was thanks to the likes of steven brownless, anita uys, charl van wyk, alison bennett, myself (sorry if i forget anybody) who won most of their races.  We got to throw Dicky Bird into the pool that year - remember that tradition of throwing the teacher who represented the house into the pool?

I can only speak for our years, but it was always tight competition between rhodes and barnato in athletics and swimming.  If i remember right, we also won the athletics that year.

Delia, I never was any good at swimming, although I did my share of splashing in the pool, but yes, Barnato won that year and we won the athletics.  I remember I still broke the record in the "krieketbal gooi" event that year.  It was also the first time that I actually beat a girl (and for the life of me I can not remember her name) a girl who used to be in the red team, in the 100m event.

Was'nt a guy called Rudi Heusdens also in your swimming team?  If I remember correctly, Mrs. Elaine Shepherd used to be the coach the swimming team.  The only time I actually participated in swimming, was when we had to get sponsors from people in town - we had to swim like 60 lengths , hell and I did it, no matter that it included some 'versuipslag' - in order to raise money for some cause???  And again the Green team kids swam the most lengths, so we won the event for inning the highest amount.  Can't remember who the kid was who did the best, but he/she also got a special prize.

So  ------  GO GREEN  -- we still support you all the way.  (I think Kobus Wiese also used to be in the green team.)

I was in the GREEN TEAM and so where the Masterton's and Kim can't remeber her name! we were cheerleaders. I remeber the running, and swimming, i could not stand the swimming, liked the running. Tracey Hockney was in the green team aswell. Give me a "b" give me a "a".......and we would always have to jump up and shout out the name....who remembers the gymnastic display we had to put on?

Hi Dalene - i remember rudi heusdens but i think he was in rhodes  (i could be mistaken) - he would've been in the school swimming team tho. i've got an A4 photo of the 1977 school swimming team but i'm having trouble in posting any photos - i've tried in the past and it doesn't work - think it's got something to do with us being on a network (yes, i surf at work) - it inserts the whole link, not the photo - Mike, any suggestions?

when it comes to accomplishments that year - i remember it was tight between anita uys and myself for victrix ladourum (sp??) - even tho i won all my races, she won victrix 'cos i didn't take part in butterfly.

with the cricket ball throw and your comment on the girl you beat - the first person that came to mind was Amor Agenbach - she was also good at running - was it her maybe, she was in rhodes?

Morning Delia, You'll have to ask Paul or Robert about Networks , but I imagine that they would restrict that type of thing from work...

Thanks mike - my gut feel was it had something to do with that - when i've tried to post pics, an error message comes up saying the message body is blank.  pity, oh well, so goes life.... :)

Post by: Dalene Steenkamp (Coetzee) on October 23, 2007, 11:02:47 AM
No, it was'nt Amor. I used to participate in the age group for the standard lower than we were, 'cos I was younger.  It could have been Annemarie Stander - I know she also competed against me in the javelin item in high school, and as far as I can remember she also ran a good race.  She also took part in swimming.   Her dad was Barry Stander - remember them?   Anyway, ask Paul to help you post those pics - would really like to see them.
Anita went to Paarl La Rochelle - boarding school - then her parents moved to Kleinzee and from her st. 8 year on she then came to Springbok NHS.  Last time I had contact with her was when we had our 20yr reunion - she never showed, but I've still got her address somewhere.  Her married surname is also Steenkamp.

The boy next to her with the red hair is Charl Coetzee - Rooi Andries Coetzee's son.  Him and my sister, Wilma, were big pals then, but they are 8ys plus younger than the age group we are in.

Thnx a million, Delia.

I will have to sit down and dig into the archives of my brain about those ?? faces.  Funny how one tends to forget.  Same as you - recognise the face, but cannot put a name to it.  You actually remembered a lot more names than I did.  Will post the names as they come back to me.

Best of all, when I opened the picture I immediatly recognized you - remember I had you confused with Delia Munn.  Jeez, it's bad when the brain gets rusted up - must be this new purple capped baby powder that I'm sniffing - camomile scented - legend has it that it makes you relax.  So, factually I'm not rusted, I'm just very very relaxed in the head.  tee hee hee

For those of you who are interested - the school interhouse athletics was held this week and I am pleased to announce that Rhodes were the winners!

Cameron was also very excited to come home and tell me that she has also be put in Rhodes. They normally only get split up in Grade 1 but obviously decided to change it to Grade 0.

Rhodes has really proven themselves this year what with winning the gala and the athletics! Lets hope next year is just as good!
