@ Koos  .. What  is  so  wrong  with the past ?  it is   after  all  where we come  from  and  has helped  shape  us  to what we are  now  ,  and  equips  us  to  face the  future  as  well   .. to have  good  recollections  is  healthy  especially  considering  we  had  a  priveleged  life  in  OM  ... It all  depends  how  one  sees  it  , You  can  be  a  whenwe  longing  for  the  "good old days "  or  a wiser  soul  who   can  and  has  moved on   and  can  safely  look back  and  honour  his  background , his  hometown , his  parents  etc .. again  I  echo  Diannas  words   each  to  his own ....

Ja, sometimes the past haunts you, then you also want others to get away from there.......

So, Koos, I think we will keep digging around there till we might find your skeletens - we are'nt afraid of them.

We don't live in the past, we remenice about it, joke about it, remember it, but like Diana said, boy HAVE we moved on.  We have beautifull lives, good jobs, fantaboulous kidds:  exacatatiously just the way we all never planned it should or would be, but

MOST OF ALL  -  WE ARE VERY HAPPY AND FULFILLED PEOPLE.

Koos unfortunately the truth of it all is .... there is NO guarantee of tomorrow so why not enjoy what you had and worry about tomorrow if and when it happens! e154

Hi Koo's....i think you posted that comment as a joke......however........when you reach 50.....you start to think about your life more...the people youve met , the places youve been, Oranjemund has always been what i call a special time of my life,  The people i knew from there had been thought of often over the years........to cut it short...through this site and others weve now been able to stop wondering whatever happened to so and so....weve met new friends and old ones we never thought we would see again, were planning reuinion ect and everyone is very very happy about it all, so when your 50 you might get the urges to come back on here ......or maybe not........everyone im sure has wondeful lives....some of us maybe dont, but surely you cant say wanting to see old and new friends is sad........but you were joking i know your were so ......ha ha ...

Title: Re: TIME TO MOVE ON

Koos lives in ZA, and we have to admire the effort he went to by registering on the forum, just to post that single post. We hope he can see past his short sightness and reply to our posts, but if he did that then he would surely be contributing to the forum....

I know of another lady in Oranjemund.....a really old timer, who also does not believe in reliving the past, fair enough, but   the peuprose of the site was not just about living the past, but rather of sharing information about who's gone where, who's doing what and rekindling old friendships..... One cannot just obliterate your past, one can not be bitter about your  past, unless you have something to hide.....

Hi folks,

Going on Koos's photograph, he seems quite young to be on the forum? Maybe small things amuse small minds?
All I can say is  - Koos catch awake-up and get a life!!

Sorry for only contacting you so late on Christmas day Mike, time seemed to fly by, Eric and Liz were very happy to speak to your old man via Skype and it was good speaking to you again - even though so short.

Any way let me go back to watching "Cream Live Reunion" dvd and Koos have some happy weed  :Weed_Spin_2: maybe you will see the happy side of life!

Go rockers!!

:36_2_24: Koos you must of had a sh.....ty time in Oranjemund - hence the attitude.  Oranjemund was what you made of it.  For many of us it holds dear memories, bringing smiles to our family and friends when we share our PASTS.
It is sad that you cannot share this with all our old Oranjemunders.

Koos after many days of thinking and pondering all I have to say is well
you came and had a look
and read - and
you returned for your bitch slapping
so where does that leave you....
also I think you've got the message,
we are not living in the past simply revisiting it.
GET A GRIP MAN,
Happy new year

Geez, Koos . . . ???

Okay, that's it . . . the "Canadian Poler Bear" will be making a concerted effort to be back for the 2008 Oranjemund reunion!!    I will make a really big effort to start saving those muhla-sheckles to be able to afford a First Class flight . . . might even have to sacrifice my big-screen HDTV and cable connection to THE sports channel that will give me real sports like rugby and cricket.   :pianto1:

To hell with it, Koos . . . I have thoroughly enjoyed making contact with my old friends and aquaintances from my teenage years that I had the privalege of spending in Oranjemund . . . and even making some new friends along the way!!    I'm not living in the past, but just reminiscing about the great memories I have of my ten years in Oranjemeund in the 60's and 70's . . . they are happy memories, and they give me a lot of pleasure . . .  :culo1:

And, yes, I am really looking forward to being able to attend the 2008 reunion folks . . . no guarantees, but I will certainly try!!

Best wishes for a great 2008 and have a Happy New year to you all.

To the guys . . . .  :emot172:

To the gals . . . .  e154

Mmmm... I  think  we should now   obliterate and  bury koos  and  his  posting , a  sort  of  new  year   cleansing .a  different  kind  of  moving  on ..
Title: Re: TIME TO MOVE ON

If we ex OMers are what we are because of where and how we grew up years ago in Oranjemund, then it stands to reason that Koos is reflecting his experience too. It was obviously not as great us ours. I sensed some envy in what Koos said. And not a lot of maturity. Shame.

But WTF folks, we have moved on and can celebrate our history however and in whichever manner we want to. We do not need anyone's consent on how we do it, nor  permission to look back and smile at the good times. If I am an old fart who enjoys your company and can reminisce for hours at a time and you participate too, then great. Just kick me out when I get boring!

Best wishes to you all for 2008. And especially to you Koos.

PS: Mike, I still hate these blerrie smilies!

Hi Guys, I have to agree and disagree with Koos.Yes O/mund was great and it did shape alot of us, we had some great parties and awesome times. Its fantastic to go online and see who is doing what and where.Even Oppie will agree, we had some laughs when we worked in the Recovery Plant with Charlie Ritter.
But that was 30 years ago, we have all changed, our friends have changed, our relationships have changed, our lifestyles have changed. I personally have no interest in O/Mund get togethers or trips to O/Mund etc.If I see anybody I know, Like when I bumped into Oppie and Debs at the rugby at UCT a few years ago, that was fantastic. Its lovely seeing people from the past, but to sit and chat about when we did this and when we did that and do you remember this and what happened to her and what happened to him and how old is she. Maybe thats just me and how I see things.

Regards
Mike

Well  put  points Mike H  ..  yes  we  have  all  grown  and  changed ..  when  I  left  O'mund  I said  my  goodbyes .. kept  a  small  core  of  close  and  trusted  friends  and   thought  that  was  that ... said  I  would  never look  back ..   More  change   and  Now  I  find  myself  looking  back  again   but  with  a different  viewpoint   and    my  memories  are  a sharing  thing  ...    anyhow  its  good  to  make  contact  again ..  Most of  us  know  that  it  cannot  be the   OM  of  the   60's  or  70's  again .. hell  man I  even  reminisce  over  the  difference  in  CT  between  the  80's  and  now ...   how  values  have  changed ..  I  battle to  find  quality   in  people  out  there  now  ...  My  intent  is  to  go  back  for  a  "reunion " it  will  be  good  to  walk  past  my  first  home ,  the  second home ,  the  duplex ,  the   bedsitter ,   memories  will  flood back ...  I will test  my  memory  ...  it  will  be good ...  the  town  ,,  yes I  will  see  the change  ,, some  good  some bad ..  whatever  it  is  I  will  have  had  an  interesting  drive up   and interesting  stay ,   some  good  partying .. .. then life  goes  on .. but  yes  we  grew up  in  an  interesting  place  and  for  that reason we  should  be  keeping  its  memory   alive ,, and each  one  of  us   has  something  to give....

Somehow I agree with you Michael.
On the other hand, OM stands not just for another time, it's somehow another world. A world I left as a child and I felt was unreachable forever.
I know so many people here, that were born where they live now. Or at least they live close enough to stay in contact. The erea is what they call home.
Seeing that I (and probably several other OMers to) have traveled a bit also as a child, OM is just part of my home in the same way I mentioned about the people in my surroundings nowadays.
As I said. Somehow I agree with you. There's no sence in greeving over the past and wishing things back Every time in life has it's own ways and possibilities you should cherish. I believe that most of the forum people will see this in a simular way.
Actualy this goes to Mr. Koos.......

And then...
Some of us are just enjoying the fun.....

We're not trying to re-live our past, but simply remembering the good (and bad) times we experienced in O'mund. As for being dissappointed with what O'mund has become, sure things have changes, and so have we. I left O'mund in March '85 and returned in Nov '04. During those years, I travelled around the world and saw amazing places. Yet, that one day that I spent back in O'mund was amazing. So many memories came back to mind and I wish I could have stayed just another day. I was running around taking pictures of every street corner that reminded me of some eventful moment of my childhood. I don't see anything wrong with that and I have no regrets whatsoever for having gone back there after all those years. And my family, who have not been back, were overjoyed just looking at the photos. So for those who will be going to the Reunion, it's guaranteed to be a trip of a lifetime!

You're right Patricia. It's not just the good memories. A lot of the bad mem. come up read on the site. It helps understand and devour. So this sight is full of chances....

Next time roll out the red carpet and limosine and then I'll even dive into the pool with you. Hey, that could be a great thing to do at the Reunion. Everyone jumping into the pool like we used to do at the end of St.5.

Here is the $64m question - should I come to the reunion?

To help me decide, I want to know:

1. Who can I write a message to on the sickbag on the plane to OM?

2. Who will pass it to the person I address it to?

3. Can Bev 'n me bomb you lot from the big diving board?

Title: Re: TIME TO MOVE ON
Post by: Dalene Steenkamp (Coetzee) on January 30, 2008, 07:16:09 PM
Robert  -  you may address that letter to me and hand it to me yourself when you get there  -  just as long as you are there.  I don't care - you can even hand me two letters (ha ha), but be there.

Yes, you may bomb us, but from what I have read here, the big diving board is no longer there, so you can climb onto the roof of the keepers/watchers office and make your bombs from there!

So - what have you decided?  Are you going to be there?  Ok, just 1milj dollars will also help a little with all our expences for the weekend, so bring that with  -  the rest you will need for your recovery program after the weekend!

My final  words  on  " moving  on "  and  the  proposed  reunion  in  November ..
I  have  been  giving  this  a  lot of  thought   .. I  in fact  wanted to  sneak  into  town  ala  Patricia  Lotte  style    when  I  turned  50  ..  do  my  little  scout  around  and  then  quietly  dissapear ..  this  was  all  changed  for  me in  that  suddenly  a  lot  of O'mund came  to  me .. making  contact  after  all these  years ..  I  found  that  I was ready  to  meet  again  and  share of  my lifes  journey   and experiences ..  so  I abandoned  that  plan ..
Now  I  am  looking   forward  at   November  .. what  am I  going to achieve ??
I  got  this  in  the  quiet hours  of  the  morning  ...  dreamstate
" You  have  travelled   some  distance  on lifes  journey , its  time to  take  a  step  back  and look   at  how  you  have done  on  this  journey ... by  going back    to  where  you  were born  and  raised   and  connecting  with  places  , although  maybe  changed   with  time , you  have   that  inner  memory  it  will be  enough . You  will   be  able  to  ground  yourself  again  and   then  move  forward  refreshed  and with  new  energy "
I  look forward  to  it...

Barbara, you really know the way to a man's heart. I have not heard this line since...well, errr I can't recall.

Having met Sandy when he was still in nappies and I was  wearing my first pair of junior Y-fronts, I think Mr B has had cause to think deep during his short and exceptionallly eventful life.

I too want dinner with the dickhead to tell him something I thought of when he arrived home after his night on the tiles with a troupe of baboons and was carried from the ambulance into the B's home at 2nd Avenue........

laughpoint

So maybe we 3 plus more can do so at the reunion?

I had mentioned the baboon story to all the old friends who were invited to Sandy's while i was over in C/T last year.....everyone laughed and said it wasnt true....and that Sandy made the story up himself.....i disagreed and said i knew it was true as i rememebr my mum telling me all about it.........anyway ay Sandy's that night i was dyin to ask him about it....anyway to cut the story short (something am not very good at )  Sandy has still got the new's paper reporting his mishap with the baboons....with full story .....

.Sandy...take it the reunion with you............

The big one? Safety reasons?
I remember a boy jumping from the small one. I thgink he couldn't swim properly yet, so he jumped toward the side to be safe. Now he always pushed his tongue out. He jumped to far, hit his chin and almost bit his tongue off.

Bev,

We lived at 62-2nd ave. You lived on the same side as us but down the road. Weren't the Castles on the corner?

We left 2nd ave to move to 21-1st Ave sometime after Sandy's episode. Your photo at the pool was taken in 1966 so I might have been in Std 4 or was it 5? Presumably already booked into littlewood House at Wynberg Boys High!
