I do not know the exact details, but a visitor to Oranjemund ( I believe a male 19 or 21) drowned while swimming at the Hohenfels (opposite Beauvallon) campsite... the body is still to be recovered!
Here's another Almost drowning story on News24, I only hear about this yesterday..

I Read the artical Mike, I remember in my youth , there were quite a few of us at the mouth and the backwash was very strong. There were a couple of children in the water and they got into difficulty and we had to go in and rescue them, very scary.
A very deceptive river mouth, I use to always watch in admiration hor Craig Thornton would Windsurf on the ocean at Oranjemund, Now and again Owen Kitchen would also, it kinda made the beach at Oranjemund seem like Muizenberg.....
How we never got in trouble is by pure luck and hoards of angels protecting us. I remember us swimming the river when in flood at Beauvallon - would walk miles up the river and then get in - just drift with the flow and swim out again when you saw where every one else was watching if you would appear or weather you had already met your fate in life. Best of all, we were'nt the best swimmers in the world. My mom used to say she's gonna kill us first, then she would'nt have to worry so much about us being in the river.
I always thought the best swimmers in Africa came from a small town in the middle of the NAmib Desert, Just look at Coreen Swanepoel.....
Now Mike, don't try to make me feel bad about my swimming abilities!!! No matter how I spalashed all over the place in the pool or the river - it was good enough to keep me alive till this day, so I suppose you could class it as the best survivor for the Namib Desert then.

Did she train in the sand? Is that what makes African swimmers so strong?
She might have, but where I learnt to spell..... that's a total different story!
