I always have a good laugh when I watch the weather report on SKY News, often wondering if it is even worthwhile doing a report, because  you cannot even see the British Isles, just one big white cloud.....

The lot in England are glad when there is just one big cloud cover, it's the only thing keeping the heat in.  When there are no clouds you can be sure you gunna freeze your  arse off!

Rhona, whats the longest time that you guys have gone without rain?

Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: Rhona on January 04, 2008, 11:32:49 AM
Now that's a tricky one..............On a good day we can have a couple of hours with no rain!!!
When we first moved to Ireland, 26 years ago, there were good stretches without rain, a couple of months at a time, but then the farmers would start to complain, people used to say they wanted rain in one field and the sun shining in the field beside it............now I think it rains almost every day.........Last summer I can't remember one dry day............this 'global warming' should be renamed 'global wetting'. At the moment, the heavens have opened and it is bucketing down.........So Mike, do you and your family fancy a trip over here, good beer.....pity I can't say the same about the weather!!

Rhona, I remember when I visited your family back in 82, I remember the village and I remember walking through a stream in a field behind your folk's house, Now one of my favourite TV programs was Ballyk.... and I always thought of you guys when I watched it.... always liked to idea of moving to a place like that..... Michele's being trying to get me to visit my Uncle this Year in Glasgow and pick up a coin collection, but I don't know at this stake.....  How many pubs were in the village?

Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: Rhona on January 04, 2008, 12:37:05 PM
There are 9 pubs that I can count off the top of my head...like any good town in Ireland, myself and my husband are now living in a village in Co.Cork, nice place............one small shop and 3 pubs!!! If you are ever looking for directions, people always direct you from one pub to the next, eg: turn right at such and such pub, go straight on until you come to XYZ pub etc etc.........
I remember your trip here, you came with your dad, God that seems like a lifetime ago............you are well over due a return visist..........and as for Paul and Steve........well at least you can say you made the trip once, which is more than they can say........
I think Michelle is right, you guys should come over to this side of the world.......I know you are up to your eyes organising the reunion in 2008, so I'll tell you what, I'll give you a break and only start setting the table for you in 2009, now that's plenty of notice to get your pennies and passports in order...........whatcha say???

Sure we can go leprechaun hunting, and the more you drink, the greater the chance of catching one and that crock of gold!!!
Sure when ye leave O'mund, why not pass by this way and see how we party at this side of the world? Just one thing................... please bring some sun with you.............I'm so pale at the moment, I think I've actually gone blue!!!

You're only teasing us now Mike, going on about the sun.............It is still raining here!!! Although on a good note, had a lock-in in the pub last night and a sing-song...........eventually escaped at 3.30am.........swear I saw a leprechaun as I crossed the road to home............

lock in, WHY.

i believe you, Rhona about the Leprechaun ?
Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: Rhona on January 06, 2008, 08:05:35 PM
Lock-in to get extra alcohol; after closing time; first the publican clears the pub of any excess people, and then the chosen few can drink away, so long as a couple of songs are thrown in for good measure..........nice!!! Except for those damn leprechauns.........
Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: georg ruf jr. on January 06, 2008, 08:09:31 PM
well Rhona. I know you don't live anywhere in the British Isles. They'd always put you out of a pub at 11:00pm. (11:10pm) At least the last time I was there.

Ah, chosen few who are trustworthy to play the game !,
Georg the laws are changing here, publican's can acquire extended license for extending opening times.
Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: Rhona on January 06, 2008, 08:18:49 PM
As far as I know they still do throw you out by 11.10, but here in Ireland (if you're lucky enough), the publican bolts the door and keeps on serving............his very own personal extended liscence...........keeps serving until there is a loud knock on the door and then there is a scatter from inside...........

UK laws have changed, Friday night are different to Saturday as I understand it due to the laws of the Sabbath... anyway what do I know I don't go out in the city.

I spent a couple of evenings in Irish pubs back in the eighties. Wil music. Wild singing. Wild drinking. Good Irishcrack. 5 to 11:00: "Last drink folks." Everybody storms the bar coming back with as much booze they can carry. 10 past the pub was empty. Mad!
Title: Re: Winter in England
Post by: Rhona on January 06, 2008, 08:33:13 PM
Bet the pub wasn't completely empty George, the chosen few were hiding out the back, in the hallways or slowly sipping the last of their drink, and then the doors were bolted and the craic continued on into the night while you were fighting the queue in the chip shop, the chosen few were ordering more booze and singing 'The town I loved so well...........' and all the other good irish songs that every one knows at least one of.............

The pub down the road from me has many lockins .........the pub is only a couple of metres away so can crawl home. Some pubs in the town can stay open untill early hours of the morning, there is one that only closes at 6.00am.

woke up to 6 inches of snow on friday - couldn't go to work - what a shame.  So Frank and the two boys and I all went to down the street to our local for a meal and a few pints.  Crumlin pubs are normally last orders at 12:00 - so we buy 4 drinks and stay till they are finnished.   allgood

Thank heaven I don't live there.  Looking for something warm to put on -  I get cold from just reading about your winters.   Will never be able to get up in the mornings  -  even in our SA Kalahari winters I swear that I am a bear, 'cos I tend to go into a state of hybernation.

Have only been to the UK in summertime.

Shame, now I feel extra sorry for Pole King alias Keith the Dancer who lives in Canada.  I fully understand why it will be difficult for him to make the effort for the reunion --   they have to dig themselves out from under the snow first, and then start that long journey he has told us about.     laughpoint

My only saving grace is that we have cental heating in all the rooms, so mine is always on full blast. I try not to venture outside. I have been here 15 years and still cannot get used to it. My bones need some sun.

Yes it will be worse for our canadian Keith.

i remember the winters in Windhoek well. Temperastures below zero at night and the countryside embeded in white frost. That was cold. But tough boys wear shorts and go to school that way. You knew by the time you get back, you'll have temoeratures up to 30°C.
In Germany you're glad when the temperatures don't go further down over the day.... (Sometimes they really do...) coldest winter I had went down to -17°C Brrrrr. I used to work as a chef then. So I took a shower at work and by the time I got home (5 minute walk) I had ice in my beard. Brrrrrr...
